I'm getting a xbox and plan on modding it. Then it will be the perfect mediaplayer, playing whatever you want.. divx, xvid, vcd, svcd and on and on..

Can these players play divx files from a DVDr or only CDr's?

Does anyone know of any disc changer players?

as asways pc_arcade have rigth.... dont argue just go buy a xbox and mod it.... its perfect for all divx/xvid/mpg/ogg/ac3 movies and it even play in 5.1 sound if the movie have it... other players are maybe cheaper but they cant beat the xbox.... and dont forget you can play games and emulate old consols/computers on the xbox also, these games/emulators are easy accessed from p2p/bt or other places...... happy buying.... :beerchug:

yeah I don't get why people pussy foot around with crappy stripped down players, that will be redundant or have problems with b-frames or whatever else it is this week, and simply don't just get an xbox.

It's more expensive to get it chipped and everything, but you get a better player in the end. I'd get one if I had the need for one, or if they were much cheaper

So how much would it be for a modded x-box and where do you get em?

you buy an xbox, which is as cheap as you can find it, normally between ?70-100 for a first hand one. Then modding is ~?40, and you do it yourself.

If you are uncomfortable with this (simple really), mod sites sell a variety of packages. You can get a modded one for ~?150, but there are a variety of options like bigger HDD, and what have you.

For that you get a player with a hard drive built in (xbox can be networked and watch films directly from your pc btw), a crappy games console with 100s of free games, an emulator, and most importantly, a player that will play absolutely everything you put in :)

On the flipside, a standalone will cost you cheaper, you don't get games, you don't get hdd/networking features, you get buggy playback, you get limited support of subtitles, you get crippled playback of formats, and can only play standard rips.

So its pretty much all in favour of the xbox, except price.

Do you have a link that shows how to mod one? I'd like to see what's all involved in it. I was going to get a standalone but if all you guys reccomend this route then i'd rather do it this way.

well, there's solderless ones, you like take the top off and plug it in. It totally depends on what model you get (which means you may need to solder like 2 wires).

For diagrams PCA will know, he's an xbox freak and done it plenty of times

i have a stand alone player (Yamada dvx6100) that basically just gets used by the wife to watch her DVD's now after i splashed out on a modded crystal Xbox and after a little set up help from PC_Arcade i've never looked back :beerchug:

and like d0c says you can even play games on it,i have d/l a serious amount of games lately that i'll probably never play but hey....if you can get em for free then who am i not to take em

i got a shop to pre-mod mine as there was no way i was gonna risk messing it up even if it is quite a simple procedure....money well spent IMO :D

Solderless mods are great, REALLY easy to fit. I'd recommend 'em everytime :)

but to be fair, they are all really shit

@PCA, don't the solderless mods require soldering on new xboxs or have they sorted that out now? If not they need to be called "a little bit of soldering mods"

The xbox is beginning to sort itself out a bit as far as games are concerned, The Chronicles of Riddick for example is superb ;)

Newer solderless options like the Xbit, Xenium etc don't need soldering on any revision xbox :)
