Just found this bugger, and its pissing micro$oft that have screwed things up!

Quote:
Apparently some people installing Service Pack 2 for Windows XP on their PCs are experience some slow down in connection speeds with their FireWire peripherals. It?s not the end of the world since once you update to SP2 you can just go back an install the SP1 FireWire drivers, but it is a headache and we?ve been holding off on installing the update until we hear some more. Anyone experience oddities with SP2?

The buggers, I've been wondering why my frickin' DV bridge has been dropping frames right and left (I'm trying to capture indy, and the damn thing can't keep up which never happened before).

Well Tom's Hardware is back on the mark in style, reviews of the available drivers and conclusion:
Quote:
Compared to the Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, the Unibrain and OrangeWare drivers produce a factual speed increase, even if it is not as high as what both vendors claim. Compared to the OHCI driver from Windows XP with SP1, however, there is no noticeable performance gain. Microsoft has enough time to optimize its Service Pack 2 drivers or to replace them by better functioning ones. Whether they deliver on the driver front remains to be seen.

FireWire 800 will certainly gain in significance in the mass-storage area, while in networking, apart from in a few, smaller user groups, will not conquer the mass market. Gigabit-Ethernet is already too widely used and the first 10-Gigabit products are already in the starting blocks. Quantity and not quality looks likely to win the day and FireWire will concede to Gigabit-Ethernet because of a lack of development. Nevertheless, if the industry joins forces, FireWire could find its niche, for example in cabling surround systems serially and digitally. It remains to be seen what comes of it.

(The advice is based on LAN speed, the drivers should sort out your setup and speed up capture too)

Here's some competantly programmed 1394/firewire drivers:

ps. f*ck you micro$hit :matrix:

Well, linux doesn't include 1394 drivers like most things, you have to download and compile yourself... and they are the ones I just linked to so...... unless it was just a "fight the power" comment? If so, unfortunately, until there are some stable NTFS linux drivers (or of course, m$ supports some better file formats) there's little point me switching, since I can't do anything with any of my drives.

Using the unibrain ones now :) , next best thing to having a mac technician making me some drivers (Since they did invent firewire). Tom's hardware benchmark them as very high speed, much faster than m$ attempts (why are they trying to monopolise things like firewire when they have no vested interest and obvious lacking of understanding is very odd.

If your dropping frames, and have recently switched to SP2 (or infact are just dropping frames whenever), you should give the unibrain drivers a whirl :)

I think SP2 is good for the genral user, but it does a lot of shit that's annoyed the hell out of me.

It's killed half opened connections, had to set that bugger to several hundred. The firewire died (!!) on me, afte rdropping frames right left and centre, so I had to get better drivers. And the firewall just ground my pc to a hault with emule running, so that went off.

I'm starting to think its lagging up avi playback too...

SP2 changes Windows Media Player, so that could be why you are noticing some playback slowdown. Now it's WMP 10 instead of 9.

Every version of WMP gets bigger and bigger. It's gonna get to the point where it's like 10 gigabytes, most of that space being devoted to tricky programming to disallow any other program to play back media. And the surgery to have WMP implanted in the base of your skull will be so painless is will be no wonder it's number 1.

Freakin Micro$oft.

err wmp is total shit, I've never, nor will ever use it ;) I would highly suggest you take a similar approach if you watch movies or any form of media beyond the odd occasion. Recommendations:

Replacement - Media Player Classic (not m$!!!), is a very, very simple and brilliant light weight player
Heavy Duty - Zoomplayer, awesome player.

Its unrelated to player the symptom, just seems to like. Probably to do with FFDshow... it always is that bloody thing :matrix:

Yes i had that problem with my avi's again like i did with "Sweet Movie" where anytime i clicked on it it would close all my folders and windows i had open and bring me back to the desktop. Once i uninstalled ffdshow and updated the version i haven't had any problems.....yet!
