Post subject:  SATA HDD
Ok considering an upgrade to a SATA HDD, my mobo supports it, it has the lead aswell, just want a few answers plz.

If I installed alongside a standard IDE drive would it be easy to ghost, if that is the right term, my current HDD onto the new one and then remove the old one? How easily done is this?

Does SATA have a different power connector? My system came with a cable, which I asume to be the data cable as it bears no resemblance to a data cable whatsoever.

What sort of performance increase would I see?

Cannot be bothered to research this, I simply want straightforward answers LOL

I ghosted my system from IDE to SATA, without doing this it was a real bitch getting the 2 drives to work together but this method worked fine.

SATA does have a different power connector but it should have both for backwards compatibility.

Not done any benchmarking but the SATA drive runs like shit off a shovel next to the IDE.

Cool, was looking at ghosting my current drive as this would be easiest. I got a load of shit with my mobo for SATA, have to see what cables, I assume it was the data cable I got.

I do not see any special type of power cable tho, so I would have to check that the drive I bought could take a standard power lead right?

SO I would fit the sata and power up my system, do any formatting and the like and then what? How does a ghosting app actually work?

If I remember correctly then yes, it should do though.

I just fitted the sata, used Partition Magic to set up the partitions and then used Norton Ghost to copy from one drive to the other. Should be dead easy :)

Just had a look at adaptors for the power lead, a couple of quid so that is no biggie.

Cool, I thought ghosting woul be that easy. One query tho, after you ghost onto the new drive, what happens at the next boot, is it gonna know what drive to use if both are still present? Or could you simply rip the old one out and then power up?

Sorry for all the questions, but it is so much easier to ask someone who has some experience, rather than reading thru 700 pages of shit on google, and all you get is raw facts, I want real world experiences thank you very much. :beerchug:

Some drives have standard 4pin power connectors, some have a SATA power connector. If your PSU doesn't have a SATA power connector and your drive does, you'd need an adaptor lead (couple of quid).

I'd assume same as with two IDE's; Install SATA as slave drive, ghost from IDE Boot drive to SATA Drive, shut down and restart after changing jumpers to make SATA master and IDE slave.

I'm building 2 systems tonight with SATA HDD's but no IDE. My own system has 4 IDE's but no SATA (although the mobo supports it).

So running a SATA & IDE side by side isn't a good idea George?

I have heard conflicting reports about this, some say it is no problem, others have said they had issues running side by side.

I was told I would need a seperate disk with SATA drivers on for when/if I need to install Windows with only a SATA drive installed, surely SP2 woulda sorted this out. If not, why not?

I got a trojan and had to revert to a ghost image I took after installing the SATA, I couldn't do a clean install for some reason and ppl at work reckoned it was because of the 2 drives side by side. It installed fine the first time though, once I found the driver on the mobo CD. I wouldn't touch SP2 with a bargepole though as I have an Athlon 64 and I have heard there are serious compatibility problems.

I would if I had the cash, but TBH the speed I have no wis decent enough, I just se an opportunity to get a little more at little cost.

Hmm, my monster already has a SATA...... A second one is not that expensive....but what raid level? Do I want speed or data safety? *sigh* hard decision. :lol:

You don't need 4 drives, 3 drives are needed. So sayeth my raid controller. :) One's parity. 1 requires twice as many drives because its got 100% redundancy, 0+1 isn't, it can be 33% redunancy.

btw. I have 5 drives and they are extremely quiet.

All that said I still go for speed:
