Posted this on another site as well and they recommend cleaning the laser, so i'll give that a go when i get home.
It burnt an audio cd fine tho, unless it has 2 lasers

Hi, I've had a Pioneer 106D for about a year now. Firmware is 1.07, the latest so Pioneer checker tells me. All was fine till Friday. Now whenever i burn it just stops, could be at 2%, 6% or 9%? I haven't changed anything at all. I've tried d/l and installing a newer ver of InstantCopy, and i've also burnt with decrypter. It just stops, the light on the drive goes out, taskmanager says the burn software is still running. I've removed the drive in device manager and let it reinstall, and i'm at a loss as to what to do now! I've googled the problem but couldn't find any answers to this specific problem. The drive reads discs ok. The discs are Ritek dvd-r , the same that i've used all along. Is it time for a new drive? I thought if the drive was broke it just wouldn't burn full stop! Any ideas? John |

Well if i recall correctly, pioneer's do have two lasers so your DVD one maybe knackered. Perhaps trying in another machine might yeild some results? |

cables are normally perfect since they don't do much beyond sitting their. Its either laser failure or a software issue. Moving it to another pc is the best way to test I think

But when resting on a HEATED object, they tend to go bad. You can't deny that! |

No comment, never had it done but I'm not denying that people out there don't mess up their wires, just that its more likely something else. If it was the wire it wouldn't burn audio CDs, infact it would be unlikely that the drive was detected I'd assume. Given that its just copper wire inside plastic casing though it seems a tad unlikely, thats all

Happened to me on a 6 year old pc. IDE was routed by the PSU and just melted. |

Well i'm hoping this is sorted now. It's burning as i type, 30% now, hasn't got that far since Friday! I got a lens cleaner from Asda with an audio track on it, so it's given it a proper clean. Had to turn the sound off tho 'cos the music was awful lift type music! If it was Hammond organ music i might have suffered it tho 
I really couldn't afford a new burner at the minute. Well relieved. EDIT: F@CK, it stopped at 63%! I'll have another go tomorrow, maybe i shouldn't have been surfing at the same time. |
