Post subject:  Modded Xbox question

I'm considering getting a modded Xbox to replace my standalone Yamada. I quite like the Yamada and it plays most things thrown at it, but it is time to move on.

I know nothing about the Xbox at all, in fact I've never even seen one running. I've done a little research though and found these for sale:

http://www.kanection.co.uk/section.php/ ... 89b95166db

Which one of the two would you guys recommend? Also what else would I need with regards to software (or any other hardware).

Any help much appreciated - I truly am a complete noob when it comes to consoles. TIA.

The 2.6 mod chip is fine

I'd add a Remote control and you'll need Xbox Media Center too

?160 for a prechipped Xbox is quite a good price. What DVDdrive does it have in though? Doesn't say...

It'll be whatever I would guess, that's not a bad price, but I'm still of the opinion 9/10 users would be fine with a softmod

Cheers PC_Arcade, do I have to pay for Media Center? Once loaded/installed is it just a matter of bunging in a disc and it will autoplay, or do I have load media center first, and what about codecs. On my PC I always use bsplayer and ffdshow, do these programmes work on an Xbox?

Also on the site I linked to there is something called Xecutor 2 Programmer for flashing the Bios I think. Will I need that too? Also I've read about increasing the hdd size, is there any point.

Thank you for your patience, remembering I haven't even seen an Xbox startup

No, it's free :)

Load Xbox Media center then put the disk in and if you have autoplay set, it will do so, otherwise just select the file and it will play, as for codecs mplayer uses ffdshow to playback and this is incorporated into XBMC (you don't have to worry about codecs)

No, excepting what I wrote above

If it's pre installed, you shouldn't need it

 i had PC_Arcade answering all my xbox newb questions for a week or so after getting my Xbox but soon enough you'll know what you are doing :beerchug:

i may get another one in time for the bedroom just for watching movies/tv shows and from what PC_Arcade has been saying lately the softmod way be an easier and cheaper solution to the chip,i think my xbox with bigger HD and chip was about 300squid at the time of purchase :o

I've thought more about soft modding (decisions, decisions). Saw an Xbox for sale today with a couple of games thrown in for CyP?80 (about 90 UK). So just need an AR which I think I can get hold for nothing (without having to make one - thanks PC_Arcade) and Mechassault or one of the other games.

I've also read a couple of guides on how to soft mod, but I'll wait to read PC_Arcade's (still doing one mate), as the ones I read (and the software to d/load) were for NTSC.

I am still doing one, it's astoundingly time consuming though

As for the files NTSC / PAL makes no difference (or shouldn't)IF you use the most up to date fonts (UXE)

Softmodding is EASY it's being able to fix it if it all goes wrong that's hard (right Paul_Scream22? ;) )

Be war of AR memory cards, they are shit (or were, hopefully datel have improved them)

Well, got an Xbox today - the one mentioned above for CyP?80. A bit too much pressure from my son to get it there and then. Ho hum, so now to softmod the beast. I must admit my head is swimming from reading all the guides over at Xbox-Scene.

Anyway I've downloaded a gamesave for 007 Agent Under Fire and should be getting the original game in a week or so. I should have an AR too by then.

I'm trusting though that PC_Arcades tut will make everything come clear *hopes*.

I've sussed from the serial number it's date of manufacture is 2003 wk42 and from this site http://www.xbox-linux.org/Xbox_Versions_HOWTO I'm guessing the version is a 1.4, but wk42 from my serial number isn't on there.

Funnily enough my week 43 wasn't there either.

Right, that'll give me a boost, better get my skates on

PC_Arcade, please don't think I was trying to rush you or anything, just telling people of my new, shiny XBox. :D

fwiw though, as a straightforward games console, to me (and my son who has hogged both it and the TV since I plugged it in) it feels much nicer to use than a PS2.

Also am I right in assuming mine is a chinese built version 1.4 from the serial 1****** 34205?

 no, that's fine, I shousl have got further than I have TBH, it'll be good to have some incentive.

I like the Xbox, it's well designed and thought through and having a HD is a godsend

And yeah chinese, week 34 though isn't it ? I can't remember off the top of my head

From that link above the last five digits equate to YWWFF (where Y is year, WW is week and FF is country), so mine is 2003, wk42 and China (05). However I can't work out the exact version as it doesn't go upto wk42 on that link, stops at 32, just assuming as your was wk43 it is probably the same version.

And I don't mind being your incentive, but be ready for me to bug you in the future

Seriously I do appreciate your help PC_Arcade. If I get this working I will be amazed and forever in your debt :wacky: :wacky:

WOW, just WOW. Thanks PC_Arcade. Now I just have to wait for the AR and to get one of those games. Probably have to be ebay as I can't find one here in Cyprus. :beerchug: :beerchug: :beerchug:
