Can anyone recommend some remote access software, preferably as simple as possible to connect from one PC to another where no software needs to be installed on the "workstation"

I'm looking @
Laplink Everywhere
PC Anywhere
http://www.gotomypc.com
and https://secure.logmein.com/go.asp?page=home

has anyone used any of these?

Logmein looks like the best bet, and it's free(!)

Opinions please :)

is it technically possible to take control of a machine without installing some sort of server-side application?

btw i use tightVNC.
Another solution is to install OpenSSH (sshd) and access it with WinSCP.

(i'm assuming you run windows...)

 sorry, yeah, workstation is client-side :wacky:

i'm using tightvnc on linux and it's very simple. about windows, i only tested the standalone client, but the docs say:
Quote:
Both the Unix and Windows versions of TightVNC servers include small
built-in HTTP server which can serve Java viewer to Web clients. This
enables easy Web access to the shared desktop without need to install
any software on the client computer.

i know.. an applet is not the best of all worlds (i dont even know if java is still supported by IE )

It's worth a look, I'm going to try logmein first to see how that goes, but TightVNC will help me out on another project :beerchug:

Java is supported still with software from sun.

you can't access another pc without some server to handle requests. That's what server client means, you need a server and a client. And remote access is server client by definition.

Windows has terminal services installed by default, you can use that.

I use VNC to connect into linux @ uni and computers on my lan.... you need a server running on the client pc.

Citrix I use to connect into windows @ uni

I'm happy to run something Java via a browser on the client, what I meant was I don't want something explicitly installed on the client as I want to be able to access this from wherever I am.

Anyway, I'm going to take a look tonight and see what works best / quickest :)

is there some firewall in-between?
the built-in httpserver defaults on port 5800 on windows (5801 on linux).
try run it on port 80.
