So it's time to get some opinions.
I'm looking @ new CPU, mobo and gfx, the only real question is : a64 or x2-64 CPU
it would be an x2 3800+, an a64-4000+ or an Opteron 150 they will all overclock like crazy, the 3800+ by a MASSIVE 700mhz and the 4000+ / opteron will o/c to the same speed as an fx-57.
As there are so few multi threaded apps I'm leaning towards the 4000+ / opteron but I'm looking for some opinions.
Given that all I really use the machine for is gaming, video encoding and emulation I'm not sure I'd gain anything at all from the Dual cores, and I can always upgrade to one later if needs be

The main reason for me NOT to go for x2 is that for most things dual cores wont make any difference at all, therefore for the same money a bigger performance increase can be gained with a single core 4000+.
I'd be intrigued to see any evidence that I should go for the dual core as ATM there's nothing much to support it (outside of photoshop)

atm, power apps will be dual core very shortly into this next hardware generation.
Of course, linux will be the most active front for more powerful applications again.

well as i said, i got a 4000+ and it slaughters anything i've tried to use, and i do stuff like java, c++ development... got another machine for video since speeds not normally that important.
Just remember next year ps3 is multicore, and you know how pc game makers fight back when new consoles come out. If your planning on upgrading again next year or something, then it won't really matter i guess.

The CPU can be changed next year, that's not a problem

mmm, mind change. It looks like the x2 3800+ can be overclocked on air easily to 2.4ghz (.4 over stock) at which point it's pretty much identical to the 4000+ on single threaded and wipes the floor with it on multi threaded.
The only thing that makes me not 100% sure is the 4000+ is reportedly easy to O/C to the level of the FX57.....
OK I talked myself round and went for the x2-3800

Next question (I suppose aimed at Spud) are you running xp-64?
If so did you mule the release, good point bad points etc.
If not, why not?

I downloaded XP64 from Usenet but deleted it because I realised that there was no benefit without 64 bit apps to run on it and too much stuff was likely to stop working due to lack of 64 bit drivers etc.

no, but only because the build i had had a bug in it, i think it was pre-retail.
Its supposed to be very hard to crash some apps in 64 though, IE is supposed to be rather more stable and what not.
Problem is there's some compatability problems and driver support is laughable.

I might try a dual boot sys and see, time is (as ever) the limiting factor though

well personally, since you've got no files, I'd try win64, then if its still crap, just reformat with win32. Saves clogging up your GRUB or whatever bootmanager of win is called...

I'm going to download the 120 day trial direct from M$, I assume there's a crack around for that somewhere?
If anyone has one, can they point me in the right direction please?

Not a huge amount of help PCA, but my bruv has worked with several 64 bit systems, and he says that XP64 is cool. LOL that was all he said.

OK all up and running, with one fairly serious problem, I had a RAID 0 600Gb setup on a Silicon image controller, I can't seem to get it working with the Nvidia controller on the KN8 SLI, HELP!!!
