Vulcan, Son of Jupiter - Italian 60s sword and sandal film in which the classical mythology is bent to extremes to portray a film of intrigue, alliances, treason and war. Mars allies with Venus to tebel against Jupiter, they use a Thracian king to provide the muscle. Vulcan, the son of Jupiter sets out to stop them, he fullfills the role of a Hercules-like type of man: oiled and muscled he adds victory to victory. Venus is not really portrayed as the goddess of love, but more as a powerhungry female who is ready to sleep with any guy who comes out on top. Of course there is the comedy sidekick, a midget this time (it was apparently still ok to make fun of short people like that in the 60s). There is also a very well shaped woman dancing around for good measure, being Vulcans love interest. In the endfight, Vulcan and Mars keep it simple: fistfights and some wrestling, nothing supernatural. Only for genrefans I guess, bad moviefans can have some fun with this but not too much.

Horror of Party Beach - 60s beach film with an annoyingly high pitched voice singing beachsongs to the crowd who are dancing while toxic waste monsters are emerging from the sea and murdering young girls and guys. A young man who just lost his girl to the monsters and who is an assistant to the local scientist, helps to find out what the monsters are and how to destroy them. The scientist has a servant who accidentally finds out. In the meantime, the daughter of the scientist is in love with the young man and of course all ends well. Pretty typical oldie scifi monsterflick, nothing special to remember it by, or it must be that annoying singing. Acting tends to be overacting in this one and the story sometimes makes no real sense. The house full of girls doesn't get credited as actresses so maybe they were just friends of the crew? We'll never know I guess. If you are into 50s / 60s scifi then go and watch this.

The Nullarbor Nymph - starts out as a found footage thingy but fortunately switches to mockumentary style about a wasteland in Australia called the Nullarbor Plains where accordong to legend a wild woman is chasing men around who dare to travel across the plains. These men disappear and it turns out that the woman, the Nullarbor Nymph, eats them, in particular a very specific piece of the men. When two employess of Water Australia travel around to check the taps which supply water in the wild, they encounter this woman. GFor the younger employee, who gets bossed around by his colleague all the time, this is a painful experience since his relationship ended shortly before that and the nymph looks suspiciously like his ex. Some kind of a park ranger greenhorn also gets added to the mix because he reacts to a distress call sent out of the Nullarbor Plains. In my experience Australian horror films are either over the top or quite funny and this one has elements of both. Not all jokes are a success, but the nymph eating scenes are rather over the top and I had some good laughs too. Acting is OK, atmosphere and character development are sort of absent because this movie doesn't need either of those. Running for only 65ish minutes this is a nice passtime for when you are short on time for watching a normal feature length film. Bad moviefans can have a luagh but I'm pretty sure they're not the only ones.

One Million AC/DC - softporn set in prehistoric times, 90% of the film is filled with fur clad people cuddling/having sex, you don't see any genitals though. The remaining ten percent are filled with stock footage of dinosaur puppets, men in apesuits and mammoth suits, one fistfight and corny jokes like "you have the best weapon in the cave". Ultimate background film as there is literally no story to follow, the moaning sounds might get annoying though. Bad moviefans might like it, it's a curiosity that's for sure. If you want a plot however, skip this one.

Dracula's Daughter - Jess Franco from early 70s, pretty atmospheric film on a ice location in Portugal. Jess plays a pretty prominent role himself too, not just a cameo like he was gonna do later. Story is pretty simple: a woman inherits a key to a room in a castle, she is the last descendant of the count who lived there and the story is that the count was a vampire. After she has visited the crypt where the count is buried, people start dying in the surroundings, so the police start an investigation. A reporter is also being nosy and comes up with theories of his own even though nobody wants to hear them. While the police are looking for a killer, the locals know better and point at the supernatural which is of course laughed away by the superintendent leading the investigation. When will the police and the reporter start believing there is more than the plain eye can see? This film is one of  Franco's better ones, especially because of the atmosphere. The horror is not enough, it never gets scary and the gore is pretty meh but still the film keeps your attention (apart from the pretty long drawn out kissing and cuddling scenes which are one of Franco's trademarks). Pretty nice film, recommended. Bad moviefans better look for a different Franco, there are plenty others to enjoy for them.

Bloody Wednesday - the title sounded like a slasher to me but it turns out it's a psychological horror about a man being/going mad. This guy, a car mechanic, gets fired one day because he suddenly lost all knowledge of reassembling an engine. Jobless and homeless, his brother sets him up as a caretaker for an empty hotel which is for sale: the man can stay there for a while. A band of thugs harasses him but he calls the police and they are arrested. He hears and sees more people in the hotel: guests, the bellboy, etc. Are these people real or a figment of his imagination? His doctor tells him most of it is fantasy, but nevertheless he acts upon his visions because for him they look so real. This gets him into various dangerous situations, especially when some of those visions actually *are* real. The title doesn't make sense in this 80s video release, it was an interesting film though: the line between madness and reality is very thin and blurry and they portray it nicely. Acting is so so, sometimes you can see the actor try and look tortured but it just doesn't come across. Not a very good film, but not very bad either: it wasn't what I expected it to be but I wasn't disappointed.

Hagazussa - this film is something else. I don't think I have seen anything like it. It's from Austria, that's already quite special to me, and it plays out in the mountains during the 15th century when Albrun loses her mother to a mysterious disease. Years later, when she is a mother herself, she gets to deal with black magic and folklore surrounding witchcraft. The film is very implicit, you have to pay attention to keep track but it's pretty slow at the same time so it's not always easy to stay concentrated. Acting is good, atmosphere is making the film almost on it's own: the eerie sounds, the landscape, the shadows, wow. I didn't understand the film fully so I might give it a rewatch not too far into the future. I liked how your view on Albrun changes throughout the film and the atmosphere is really something like I mentioned. Overall this is a somewhat strange film, intriguing but also a tad unsatisfying because I couldn't really grasp it in it's entirety. If you want something original, go for this.

Emmanuelle 4 - Emmanuelle is running away from her long time lover Marc, and to escape him definitely and to start a new life, she gets a full body plastic surgery change in Brazil. She now looks totally different:  only her memories stay the same. The psychotherapist supporting her in the mental aspect of this change accompanies her everywhere for the next three months, in which Emmanuelle visits lots of parties, rides horses on the pampas and travels to a jungle outpost. She doesn't seem to be able to rid her mind of Marc, even though she tries hard and has sex with tons of men and women, among whom is the psychotherapist. This film takes a pretty long time to pick up pace, but when Emmanuelle is "made over" and travelling around Brazil she jumps on almost every man she sees. For the sex scenes you will have to be more patient than in, say, part 2, but overall you will see enough of those. A bit of a weird psychological twist on the Emmanuelle story, but it's an OK watch.

Cannibal Mercenary - another Desert Island Classic bootleg with dubious image quality (AR switching a few times in the opening scenes and again near the end). The opening sequence is a total Apocalypse Now rip-off, after that we get some voice over telling us something about the protagonist's daughter who is being ill and then we sink into a bunch of fistfights before he gets an assignment he doesn't want: he is retired, but the half million dollars are too tempting (because he can send his daughter to a better hospital with it) so he goes anyway. On the mission in Vietnam the scenes are filled with very violent hand to hand combat including machetes, axes and huge rocks. Both the Thai combatants and the Vietcong have M16s with a greasegun and an RPG mixed in. Scenes don't make sense all the time but they are riddled with nice corny lines like "They say time heals all wounds, but a hundred years are not enough to make up for it. Life is truly pathetic. War, money and unfaithful wives". The dub makes things worse in most cases. The Thai have to deal with some cocaine dealer in the middle of the jungle who has a very fake moustache and has a following of cannibalistic henchmen. In the showdown the heroes endure some of the worst torture tricks with supoerhuman strength and the ending is quite predictable.  Typical Asian 80s action flick with over the top violence, a nice treat for bad moviefans because there is so much to enjoy in the action scenes and in the dubbed dialogue.

Sweet Sixteen - a very nice slasher which ticks all the right boxes: 80s, teenagers, knifekills, red herrings, etc. There is a "babe" also but there is a slight problem with it: it's a child. In the movie she plays a 15-year old girl but yet the camera zooms in on her underwear really closely while she is changing, I guess times have changed, that shit doesn't fly these days anymore. I must say I was pretty nostalgic watching this one, not because I had seen it before but it gave me the right vibes all over. I also guessed the killer right in one go, that certainly helped :) Acting is OK, setting is nice, rural town with local sheriff who never gets to do anything and now has this serial killer to deal with. Some nice subplots about the new kid in town having trouble to adapt, the woman being in love with the sheriff but he is shy from proposing to her and the native Americans being harassed by racist townfolk.  Not really anything bad to say about this one, never a dull moment. Recommended, especially if you are into 80s slashers.

Whoa, that was another long break! Did you watch Sweet Sixteen already ^Rogue^? I hope you weren't disappointed ;)

I have watched many "normal" movies and lots of documentaries, I'm nearing the end of my collection, but as always there is slowly dripping in new stuff. Invited a friend to watch some crap so here are the reviews:

Pink Force Commando - heavily dubbed Taiwanese mix between kung fu and western. The storyline is sometimes hard to follow (migt be due to mistakes in the dub) even though it is pretty simple: one girl in a gang betrays the group to get the loot, and they are getting back at her for it later. This plot is laced with lots of fights in which loads of opponents jump high in the sky when "hit" (the jumps are often synchronized, like in icedancing or ballet), explosions appear out of nowhere and the participants range from cowboys, ninjas, klansmen, soldiers, thugs and an imitation of the queen of Sheba who also appears on the filmposter. A special mention goes out to the robotic arm which gets put on one of the girls, it comes with a complete toolkit with a revolver, a drill and a riotgun among other things. Had a lot of laughs because the film is so incredibly hilarious at times. Dub was sometimes hard to follow, hence why we thought they might have made some mistakes in the translation. Loads of fun to be had for bad moviefans, highly recommended for them.

Pool Party Massacre - a spoilt rich girl throws a pool party while her parents are gone. She invites a bumch of her friends, but she is pretty bitchy about all of them, so you wander why she is friends with them. I know I would have walked out on this party after 5 minutes if my friends would treat me like that, but ok. Soon the first victim of the group falls, after having seen two kills in the opening already. Actually you can see all kills already during the opening credits if you pay a little attention, but that doesn't spoil the film for some reason. The killer has a toolshed and each time he picks a different tool to kill the next victim, making for a nice game with your friends in guessing the next murderweapon. The ending has a twist, a quite nice one I might add. Not all kills are on screen and in some cases that's a real pity, but overall there is enough gore to enjoy. Plenty of horrorcliches are passingh by and made fun of, so that's a nice touch of tongue in cheek filmmaking right there. The poster is ace. Recommended especially for slasherfans.

Within The Rock - a rogue moon is on course to hit the earth, threatening to wipe all mankind off the face of the planet. There are several options for humanity to deal with this problem (the army of course wants to blow it up and be done with it) and the choice falls on a specialist mining crew who are tasked to make deep mineshafts in the surface of this moon in order to make it change course by controlled explosions: the elaborate version of "let's blow it up". While they are drilling, they find a cave filled with platinum and they harvest as much as possible in order to earn some extra money. Opening this cave set off the oxygen balance though, and some ancient creature that was hibernating in the cave wakes up. It feeds on dead, rotting flesh, and the crew is the only source of meat on the moon. So now the crew not only has to complete the task of saving the earth, they must also fight off the alien creature. Late rip-off of Alien, in which it takes about half of the movie before the creature appears. I like it when the threat is invisible for a long time. Creature looks ok, nothing really special. Gore is nice but most people die in their spacesuits, so not much space for decapitations etc. The whole film reminded me a bit of The Terror Within, except this one is actually in space. I had fun, if you like scifi try and see this.

Time Barbarians - Troma adopted this film so you have to sit through yet another stupid introduction by Lloyd Kaufman where even Debbie Rochon's pretty face can't save your lost two, three minutes. On to the film then: in some far away kingdom, Doran, a barbarian, is having fun with his queen but it gets spoiled by Mandrak who wants to steal his magic amulet. After he has killed the queen he grabs the amulet and Doran wants it back of course. Mandrak however escapes to the future (it's not explained how, or how he knows he can do this) with one of his minions and now Doran has to chase after him. Fortunately a wizard gets him a sword with which he can time travel exactly to the same time where Mandrak went: present day (1990) LA. Coincidentally, a reporter who looks astonishingly similar to the queen who got killed, just makes a report on violence on the spot where Doran appears. Mandrak sees it on TV and goes after Doran to kill him before he gets to Mandrak and gets the amulet back. Cliche parts follow with more fighting, between concrete buildings this time instead of in a forest. The ending is pretty predictable, although the reporter might have gone with him. Acting is standard and wooden at times, the story is ridiculous and effects are cheapish. It has a very heavy 80s feeling all over it, with the hairstyle of the barbarians and the clothing in the LA part. Only for bad moviefans I guess.

Mmm, wrote a review for a movie but apparently I forgot to hit "Submit". OK, here is a second try:

Strange Things Happen at Sundown - a vampire film in modern day New York. Usually if the runtime on the backside of the DVD is incorrect, it means the movie is shorter than what they promise. In this case however, it is the other way around: the cover says 90 minutes but it actually runs for 138 minutes which is only annoying if you plan to watch this and you only have 90 minutes to spare. On to the movie: it's actually a bit of a gangster/action movie, with New York mafiosi making and breaking deals, some guy stealing a load of money from them and hired guns to search for this rogue criminal in order to get their money back. On the run towards Canada, the guy (and his girlfriend) abduct a couple of Born Again Christians, of whom the woman seriously tries to convert the girlfriend. Meanwhile, an assassin is on the prowl and hits several men of the mafia mob, so they also hire hored guns to protect them from getting whacked. So far this sounds a bit like an average Tarantino plot, but the thing is that each and every person I described here, with exception of the Born Agains, is a vampire. So lots of biting, blood and killing. Sunlight doesn't play a role and the classic vampire treats are portrayed as skills which older vampires have more of (like having no reflection in a mirror). Funny how one of the elite vampires called the Reaper is portrayed as being kept on a short leash by his wife. Some nice takes on the vampirism, especially about how somebody becomes a vampire and how vampires deal with that in various ways. If you like vampires you will enjoy this one, I'd saty ayway if you can't stand them.

Mars Needs Women - these three words are being decoded at some NASA station in the American desert, and shortly after a Martian projects himself into the station to explain: Mars's population is growing onesided, with almost only men, so he and his four fellows are sent from Mars to earth in a special mission to gather five woemn in order to give birth to more Martians and save the planet's population for the future. The CO of the base is rather aggressive and denies the Martian the five women, so now the Martians resort to stealth kidnappings. They kidnap a variety of women, from a stripper to a stewardess, the main target is a scientist though, one who researched sex and reproduction both on earth and in outer space. The Martian assigned to lure her in might just get a little too much involved with her... Borderline case between classic scifi and just an old and bad scifi flick, not many sfx except from some women "disappearing". The entoire story takes place onm earth, so not so many spectacular scenes to be expected from that. For bad moviefans the diving suits of the Martians are something to look out for, but overal I'd pick a "better" film to laugh at with your friends.

Murder Mansion - aka La Mansion de la Niebla. This is actually a better name (House of the Fog) because it covers a larger part of the film, which mostly plays out in, you guessed it, a house in the fog. Several travellers end up there, stranded because of some thick fog covering the entire valley, making travelling any further a hazardous undertaking. While they are there they have to cope with each other (they have very different characters) and there is also a story by the landlady about the previous owners of the house who are now wandering around like ghosts. There are some creepy scenes in this one, the atmosphere and music do a great job giving you the creeps. The plottwist is a bit of a letdown in my opinion, but since it's a rather old movie I guess it was pretty original back then. It reminded me a bit of
Spoiler:
The Curse of the Living Corpse
Pretty OK movie, originally it was Spanish so part of the cast is dubbed over, but it's nothing too extreme. If you like 70s movies then you can safely pick this one.

The Mighty Gorga - how to make a film which plays out in Africa without ever going there? This must have been the question the director of this film was asking himself. He tried it and made this, it's not very convincing, but it is rather creative. We take some stock footage of a plane, then for exotic animals we film in a zoo (but we don't say it's a zoo, it's a compound for captured animals in the wild waiting to be transported to zoos and circuses all over the world - genius). We never take any shots of the savanna but instead all our shots are inside a forest where we put some random palms and colourful flowers to make it look exotic. Then we also build a bunch of tropical houses to house the "locals", who first are looking African, and later they look more like an Amazonian tribe. The giant ape we need is a guy in a suit who we only film in close up so we never see that he is actually not giant - genius. There are a few shots in which we see the ape together with someone else but those shots were a total failure, the fakeness dripped off the screen. As if this is not enough, the bad moviefans can enjoy the total lack of (e)motion on the face of the ape and the boom mic which enters the screen at some point. Oh, and of course all ends well and the bad guy get what was coming for him. Highly recommended for bad moviefans!

Altered States - William Hurt plays Eddie Jessup, a brilliant (and thus also a bit mad) scientist who is doing research into states of mind. He believes that next to our reality there are others and we can explore them. To do so, he floats inside a tank while under the influence of strong hallucinogenic drugs. While he is tripping, he tells everything he sees and experiences, so his colleagues can take notes which then are added to the scans and the ECTGS (? - some medical/technical abbreviation) transcriptions. For this research he visits an indigenous tribe in Mexico and takes part in their ritual, he brings home a load of the drugs they took there in order to experiment with it in the research. The sessions take their toll on him so his wife and his friends want him to stop, but he goes into the tank one more time... This had a bit of a Cronenberg atmosphere, but instead of stuff growing out of people's bodies, the stuff was coming out of their minds in this film. The contrast between the social parties and meetings and the lonely sessions in the tank is nice, acting is great (this was William Hurt's movierole) and the film keeps being interesting until the final scenes, where there is one more big trip (watching this film sober is still kind of trippy but you might want to enhance the experience) and then it's all over. That was a bit of a letdown, it ended pretty suddenly. But apart from that, great film. Keep an eye out for a very young Drew Barrymore making an appearance as one of Jessup's kids. Recommended!

Murdercycle - a guard at a government compund somewhere in the desert sees a lost motorcyclist first and a meteor hitting the earth closeby second. The cyclist checks out the meteor, and gets entangled in something alioen: it turns him into MURDERCYCLE, an armored guy on a motorbike, immune to bullets and armed with laserguns. A supersecret mission is planned to retrieve some material from the government compund but of course they run into murdercycle. It's all very low budget (Full Moon production) so we get to see the cyclist a few times and some laserbeans effects but that's about it. No aliens, no other sfx, no gore either: when the laserbeams hit something or someone they leave no scratch or wounds. The social interaction in the group is cliche and predictable, but it has some fun stuff like mindreaders and doublecrossers. The plot is pretty thin and so is character development. The twist is meh but at least there is one. Rather dull movie, I think I'll forget about it soon. Bad moviefans can have fun with the bad laser effects and a boom mic appearing in frame. There are "better" films out there though.

Cannibals and Carpet Fitters - a remote mansion houses a cannibalistic family, a bit like the ones you can see in movies such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes and House of 1000 Corpses, but this one is Bri'ish. They order their carpets to be refitted, so when the crews arrive, it's dinnertime for the family. The carpet fitters have to stand their ground in order to survive and not be eaten. They do so with, let's say, varying success. Advertised as a horrorcomedy this film is neither scary nor really funny, which is to be blamed on some extended overacting (especially by the scared boy with the bike who has to sit in the back of the van) and on a lack of jokes really. Some funny things happen, but overall this doesn't really deliver. It's still nice to watch though, but pretty predictable. The gore and the kills are good, though, and I liked the ending. So if you have 80 minutes to kill and you don't really need a scare or to laugh your ass off, pick this one.

Zombie 90 - Andreas Schnaas film (I watched Nikos The Impaler by him earlier) so expect lots of gore and not so much story. In this film people start to become zombified and then it spreads quickly of course, the doctor in the hospital who was there at patient zero, sneaks away some of the bodies to experiment on, which helps the spreading. Lots of encounters with zombies and many, many kills. Some are really creative and most are extremely fake with plaster heads and people obviously squeezing the bloodbags "inside" their bodies. Lots of fun to be had for bad moviefans, also because the English dubbing is atrocious. There are just a few voice people doing something but it sounds so overdone it is hilarious: some screechy voices expressing the most normal dialogue lines make it sound rather odd. So, recommended for bad moviefans and die hard zombieflick fans. There is a second installment of the film on the DVD I own, called Zombie 09, but I skipped through that one fast and couldn't really find any differences (runtime is also almost the same).

The Night of the Werewolf - aka El Retorno del Hombre Lobo. In 1970 Leon Klimovskiy made La Noche de Walpurgis, one of the first werewolf movies with Paul Naschy. The sequel came a few years later and in 1981 Naschy directed another one himself, which is this movie. It's about the resurrection of Elizabeth Bathory and her servants, one of which is Waldemar Daninsky, who now wants to oppose Bathory (he used to be forced to server her back in the 16th century as is explained in the opening scene of the film) and protect the girls who are arriving in Hungary to do research on the subject (some of whom fall prey to the vampires). Since Daninsky turns into a wolf at full moon and Bathroy turns into a vampire every night, this movie could also be called "The Werewolf vs the Vampire Woman part 2". The strongpoint of this film is the atmosphere which really feels like the beginning of the 70s while it is made ten years later. Acting is OK and effects are what you would expect from a film like this. I had fun, it was sort of nostalgic to watch this and made me want to watch the other two films I have with Naschy as a werewolf again, so I'm gonna put them higher on the "to rewatch" list. Recommended for horrorfans, especially if you are into Euro horror from the 70s and extra especially if you are a Naschy fan.

Lust for Frankenstein - wanted to watch this one earlier, but found out about the fact that there are a US and a European version. The European version is in the extras on the DVD, and when I selected it, it said the runtime was 115 minutes. Didn't have two hours left so I changed the movie for something else, but now I did have two hours so I put this one back in. This 1998 movie by Jess Franco is one of his later movies (between Killer Barbys and Killer Barbys vs Dracula), and it stars Lina Romay, Michelle Bauer and Amber Newman, the latter two are on the cover, even though Newman has a very tiny role. Romay plays Moira Frankenstein, the daughter of the infamous doctor who returns to his mansion after his death to complete his work on Goddess, a woman who got resurrected from various body parts. When Goddess awakens, she declares herself the servant of Moira, doing all her bidding, but after she finds Moira making out with different other women, Goddess is out for revenge. Thjis simple premise is actually the entire film, because inbetween some short sceens in which this plot is being played, there are numerous lengthy sex scenes which succeed in being totally unerotic: Lina Romay is in many of them and while she was pretty hot in the 70s, she really doesn't raise any organs in the late 90s. Same goes for Bauer, who has the extra handicap of being stitched together in this film, which adds to her uneroticness in this one. Newman is actually the only one but, well, not really my type. Apart from this, the music chosen for the sexscenes is highly inappropriate, it's more like a rock concert/party and it breaks down the atmosphere even further. This movie looked like it could be another Franco spoof of a famous horror character but it's a near total failure. The plus side is that this ordeal doesn't really last for almost two hours: it turned out the Euro version clocked in at 5 minutes longer than the US one. Only for hardcore Franco fans I presume.

The Majorettes - classic slasher from 1986, so right inside the golden age of the slasherfilm. A team of majorettes is getting targeted by a masked killer, who strikes first in the night, during a one on one in a car by one of the majorettes and a wimpy photographer. After this, the majorettes are of course shaken up, but as their coach says "we have to go on, it's the best way" uhuh, just ignore it, and you won't feel a thing. Wrong! The killer just comes back to slice the throats of the other majorettes! The film gives you hints and red herrings which sometimes turn out to be hints instead, nice. The plot is rather clever, but maybe I'm a bit biased because it has been quite a while since I saw a slasher like this. Everything is right on the spot: the atmosphere, the clothing, the bad guys (you gotta love the showdown with them in the second half of the film, reminded me of "Thou Shalt Not Kill") and the music. I didn't guess the killer, the kills were nice (although you can see the skin coloured clay on the throats which are being sliced) and overall I had a great time watching this. Recommended, especially for slasherfans.
