im really starting to like this topic - specially cause of slayer's and union.simon's reviews (yes, and few others) - those recommendations are very useful: you allcause dont have to trust those opinions 100 percent, but you can really see what to expect from movie. guys!! Slayer wrote: | Dorian Gray - I expected more horror in this film, so I was a bit disappointed. |
totally agree. i think this novel could be a very good material for really good horror movie, but somehow nobady takes this into done. ok, Texas Chanson Massacre. The Beginning - i liked this one. Yep. Through, i could not tell, is it really The Beginning, cause i could say that the movie is 50/50 about Tommy's stepfater and about Tommy. What i missed - are some psychological elements. Why all this started in 1969? Cause of slaughterhouse? Not so easy to believe. Well, we could deside than, that Tommy became a chainsaw master cause of stepfather, but...well, as i said, i missed some genetic shit or some childhood elements. So it could be some TCM part I like in star wars, but not the real Beginning. Well, fuck it. Other thing i didn't liked - the ending of this movie. Not the very-ending, but some very lame moment in the car...very cliche... And how about brothers spine?..hmmm.. and yeah, run into slaughterhouse and make a call - superman will be there in a second... But besides some few those things, i really liked this movie. I would give even some 8/10. It has some brilliant moments (cow-kaboom!; Portrait of an American Family - at some 01:19 - absolutely amazing; at some 01:13 is also very not bad, hmm, image - i even would have end movie at this point; etc), Tommy this time is better for me - without that leathermask - he looks really notorious and not some lame stupid asshole; and, allcause, some dialogs or you could say sentences - you can fucking laugh or cry, but they are very cool and right in places; like (when you see, you will understand): - What you did that for? - Balance. /// - Capture the time when boy becomes a man DD Ok, enough. I really recommend it to watch at least one time. For me it was the best part from all TCM epopee. Recommend. Now: 8/10.

The Day the Earth Stood Still: Yes the one with Keanu. This has to be the worst blockbuster remake/movie right after "I am Legend". A lot of things are not explained. It should be about love, but does not touch me at all. Simply awful.

Mind, Body & Soul - a woman gets taken to a Satanic cult ritual by her boyfriend. Just before the ritual sacrifice is performed, the police stops all of it and the satanists flee the scene. Then the woman gets accused of being a member. Her lawyer (Wings Hauser) takes her into his house to help her get her stuff together. In the meantime more people are threatened and killed by the stanists who don't want to be discovered. Of course almost everyone is involved, like you should expect in this kind of film. The twist in the end is nice, but also not very surprising if you come to think of it. The acting is horrible at times, but the desaturated colours and the overall 80s feeling makes this movie enjoyable anyhow. Kind of bad, but also enjoying. Mildly recommended.
Man-Thing - ouch, another comic made into a movie in a way it shouldn't. It reminded me a bit of Blair Witch: most of the time we are watching people wandering through the swamp, looking for each other. Boring!! Of course there is this rich guy makin money by drilling oil, not counting with the environment, or the fact that, wow what a surprise, the ground is sacred for a local tribe of American natives. Bwerk, this has been done 1000s of times before and usually in a better way. The monster is awful CGI. Avoid.
Faces of Death 2 - sequel night, and I started with this. Not the same as watching part 1, which is more legendary. Some stunts, accidents, crimes, wars and animal cruelty pass along on the screen. Some of it looks very spectacular, like the carjump over the river, but other stuff is very fake, like a scene supposedly in El Salvador where people are brought into a building marked "Morgue". Or a trial against a corrupt Liberian government where the defendant gets filmed from all sides, but you only see 1 camera on screen, which kind of proves this was a filmset and not real life. I didn't like this too much. Only a few things wetre interesting, like the nuclear testing site. Most of it was on the level of reality TV and there is a reason I stopped watching that. If you're into this stuff, go watch it. For all fans of part 1 I must say that this one is worse.
Beyond Re-Animator - I grabbed this one by accident, I meant to go watch Bride of Re-Animator, but after a few minutes I didn't care. Although this sequel has been made very long after the first two parts, it still grabs the atmosphere quite well. Combs just IS Herbert West, fantastic acting on his part again. Although I remember part 1 being very gory and this one doesn't have as much gore as part 1, it still has plenty of it. Some really nice touches, like the rat reanimated. Loved it. Recommended.
Children of the Corn IV - mmm, the Dutch cover says it is the "heaviest" part in the series, and I disagree. I think it is the dullest so far (have seen parts 1-4 now). There is no "he-who-walks-behind-the-rows", the corn is just minimally present and doesn't play a big role like before, and generally it is not scary at all. Part 1 is the best, part 3 is the most hilarious. This one is just forgettable. Well, almost: Naomi Watts makes this film worth a watch after all. She looks good and she acts well, the best of all actors in this flick. Recommended if you like to watch Naomi Watts. Otherwise: go watch parts 1 or 3.

Don't Look Down - nice thriller (there is only a hint at horror in this one) about acrophobia and facing your fears. The twist in the end is nice and I must say that I didn't see it coming. Well done. The atmosphere is not all too gripping, but the acting is good and the storyline too. Don't expect any gore, though. It is more psychological. Recommended.
Dèmoni - demons in movies tend to look more like ghosts or more like zombies. These demons fit into the latter category, and if this movie wasn't called "Demons" but "Zombies" instead, nobody would have objected. The storyline is straightworward and the gore is awesome. There is a lot of it and it is very much overdone, great! The only drawback is the cinema sealed off completely, you will need a lot of suspension of disbelief for that. Apart from that, highly recommended!
All the Boys love Mandy Lane - teen movie with a lot of real teen stuff, like the insecure blonde chick who bitches about another girl being fat while she herself is watching for hours in the mirror looking for a gram of superfluous fat on her body. The "murderer in the dark" is way too easy to guess, your first guess is gonna be right, I'm sure. This takes away a lot of potential. The ending is, well, I just disliked it. There are a few nice looking chicks, but in the end that is too few for this movie to become more than forgettable. Avoid.
The Breed - the vampiremovie, not the one about the island with the dogs. Vampires and humans are working together, but not all vampires like that. So a human and a vampire agent are sent to catch the renegade vampires. It is all set in the near future and I liked the 1984-like setting, with propaganda out of the speakers all the time and posters with "When you arrest your enemies, they become your friends" and the Stalinist like buildings and uniforms. The personal interaction betwen the human and the vampire are very cliche, but this is a nice and enjoyable movie. Don't expect a masterpiece, though. Recommended (mildly).
2001 Maniacs - a sequel or a remake, you name it. Eli Roth worked on this Herschell Gordon Lewis classic. I liked the looks of the babes better in this one, one or two killings are better in this one, more creative. But: the atmosphere and all the other killings were better in the original. If you haven't seen the original, you can easily enjoy this one, if you have, you will keep comparing the two, which isn't good for any free enjoyment. In the end I choose the original, but I must say that the difference is smaller than I had expected.

Otis - fat guy with psychopathic ideas about women kidnaps the daughter of a family which doesn't let go: they are out for revenge. In order not to spoil anything, I won't go into the storyline further, but it is interesting, I can tell you Acting great, music great, I really liked this movie. Some of the stuff has been done before of course, but this movie gives its own twist to it, which is nice and refreshing. I liked the ending. Only drawback is that maybe there could have been some victims more before the daughter, so we could get some more gore. Recommended. The Fearless Vampire Killers - classic story about vampires with a young Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. On the backside of the DVD cover it said that this was also a comedy, but either I missed all the jokes or they are just not my kind of humour. The vampire part is OK, but it all takes way too much time. This story could have been told in 80 minutes easily instead of 102. Atmosphere is nice, acting is OK. Lengths is its greatest drawback, as it gets a bit dragging at times. Recommended (mildly).

Lucker - low budget slasher where the kills follow up quickly. There is this serial killer who escapes and then pursues the only woman who survived his attacks earlier. Nice premise, sometimes it is a bit vague. Production values are low as expected, acting is not super, but also not disturbing. I really liked the scene in which Lucker gets together with a prostitute, who obviously doesn't know what kind of person was sitting in her room at that moment. The ending was a bit dull, butI'll cut the director some slack there. OK movie, not really special.
Onechanbara - I couldn't really follow the storyline here, it was something with a youth trauma concerning someone's sister killing her father. Most of the time it is just zombie smashing, with a sawed off shotgun and a samurai sword. Lots of Japanese style visuals in the fighting, very little content. Brainless entertainment, with a short sidestep where they are explaining the trauma. I wasn't impressed.

Robot Jox - in the dying days of the Cold War, this typical movie was released. When you watch it, you can easily guess its settings and political message. There is also a not so subliminal message about genetic engineering. This makes the pretty mindless action scenes between the great looking fighting robots a bit more interesting, as it is fun to point out all the Cold War cliches, like the Confederate fighter (the Soviet representation) doesn't care about the spectators that died at a fight, just like the genetic engineerd people don't care. Of course our hero does, and that makes him superhero! Recommended, but not because this is a good movie Hellgate - I had already seen Hellgate 2, but that one has nothing to do with this film (luckily). This one is actually good. Hellgate is a ghosttown where a small group of teenagers (yes, you will have to swallow this cliche, but later you'll be happy about it) meets to have fun. There are two storylines which are gonna intertwine pretty soon and it is nicely done. Effects are somewhat childish, but that makes them cute/fun to watch. Storyline is great and actually the only thing I should write more is a recommendation. Highly recommended!

Ok, little bit from my front Sorority Row - well, 50/50. The story is not really bad: few girls are joking with a guy, pretending that one girl is dead. After a while, the guy really kills the girl - it's not spoiler, you can see it on trailer; through, i didn't get it, WHY he did so? To make sure - like with some animal, that she is dead? Nah, and allcause, somebody starts after few months to kill those, who were involved in this not-so-good-joke bussiness. Sometimes it really reminds some khult classics like I know what you did last summer etc. Well, at least when you understand who the killer is - it is logical enough. Other minus - that nobody killed that not so pretty girl. Well, shes really not so pretty. The main-girl, btw, has beautiful boobs, i noticed that when all company was standing by the weel. Resume: watchable, but nothing special. Amusement - It starts like short stories movie. First story is about some road maniac - i dont really understood, who the truck guy than was; second story - really good one - is about CLOWNS! - damn classic; and the 3rd story is about some guest-house, where, allcause, lives some mad scientist or just fag. After all, yes, all those stories are connected together - you maybe will see how and why. Movie is not so bad, it has few unexpectable moments (guts). Very beautiful places - thas guest house with all beds and stuff, and other, hmm, building - its like visiting some abandoned asylum; clowns also good (yeah, i remembered how the girl was dealing with clown - one clothe off - chit-chat with clown, other clothe off - again with clown - good spirit! So, i dont really know... plot was not so great, i don't know, something missed, but it's also watchable. Frontier(s) - ohhhhh, that was amazing one. Really! Its made in France, translations were (i mean, subtitles) not so good sometimes (it's good, that i, unlike the translator, understand German language) - but... fuck it! You could really understand, what is going on. Story is really good. well, allcause, the mani sotry reminds few other movies, but theres also important and other stories - about all the protesting stuff in France etc. And also DRAMA. It has really good drama elements. I dont know, maybe this girl, this actress did really good job, but everything looks damn catchy and real. How could i describe it in few words? Well, nazis... haha...ok, there is this element, but - in few words = mud, shit and blooooood! The girl takes more than Bruce Willis in all Die Hard series puted together. This movie - one of the best horror/drama examples in todays market. 9/10 as for today. Recommended. Just fucking watch it.

Good going, Macabria, nice to see other people post here too. Keep it coming!
The night before my wedding I invited some friends over to watch bad/dirty movies. These movies are only for people who like bad movies. If you are one of them, then all of the below are recommended to you. So here goes:
Double Agent 73 - Chesty Morgan (of Deadly Weapons fame) stars in this B-movie as a secret agent who has a camera in her right boob. When she lifts it, it flashes. She has to take pictures of everyone she takes out. The criminal they are looking for is a classic bad guy with a big birthmark on hos face. The effects are hilarious, when a car explodes you get to see a nice explosion on the edge of a forest, while the car was in town. Main thing in this movie are the way too big breasts of Chesty, so we get to see them again and again.
Return to Savage Beach - one of the "gems" from my Bullets, Bombs and Babes collection. A lot of inverted striptease, where we get to see pumped up naked chicks getting dressed. In this film there is also a bunch of criminals and a secret agency (L.E.T.H.A.L., for the connaisseurs) and they are all after a golden buddha filled with diamonds, which, for some unknown reason, is the national treasure of the Philippines and was stolen by the Japanese in World War Two. In order to find it, they must "return to Savage Beach". In the meantime there are some exploding vehicles with dolls in them and some firefights. And a lot of boobs.
The Sinful Nuns of St Valentine - this nunsploitation was a bit of a bummer, because we expected way more sex with nuns in this one. Instead we got some softcore Inquisition stuff and a little torture. Later in the film the abbess gets wild and throws herself onto the lover of one of the girls inside of the convent. This girl and her lover are some sort of a Romeo and Juliet because their families hate each other. The Inquisition is radical: they order the convent to be sealed off with all nun inside it because they suspect the devil to be present. In the end all gets better and the father of the lover becomes a monk as self-punishment.
Das Wirtshaus der Sündigen Töchter - these movies are meant as a comedy with lots of sex. The comedy part is demanding, because the jokes a re SO dumb and the secenes are SO dull that you almost have a meltdown in your brain because of it. Some of my friends commented that they expected Benny Hill to enter the screen any moment. The sex is a bit dirty, as it is so oldfashioned and most of the people have unteint except on their underwear bodyparts, which looks ridiculous. I don't remember any storyline, either because it was very late and there was a lot of beer, or because there actually was none.

Stagefright - Michele Soavi's debut film. Impressive for anyone's first attempt at making a movie. I'm not a real slasher fan, but I recognise good slasher films and this is one of them. Soavi succeeds in creating a desperate atmosphere, in which your hope for survival diminishes every so many minutes. Very good. Argentos hand is a bit recognisable, but it certainly isn't an Argento rip-off. The only thing I didn't really like was some of the characters, as they are a bit over the top. Apart from this detail, great film. Highly recommended.
Critters 4 - the last and in my opinion most boring Critters film. There is very little Critters action, it takes 30 minutes to see them or the first time. There are maybe 10 Critters in total in this movie and almost no gore. Brad Dourif is great, though, as a mechanic on board the spaceship (the entire story takes place on a spaceship). In the end there is a weird change of stance by Ug, which is kind of incomprehensible. Even if you like Critters, you can easily skip this one. Watch parts 1 and 2 for being nice and OK to good films, watch part 3 for Leonardo Di Caprio and skip number 4.

Unearthed - desolate town gets visted by stranded travellers and a monster which hunts them. There is some native American mysticism involved but it is not very convincing and neither is the alien stuff in it. The CGI is so-so, I have seen worse. A lot of people die, more than I had expected. Apart from this, the storyline isn't very surprising. It is an enjoyable movie, but it offers nothing special, mediocrity is the word. Not bad, but not recommended either.
The Pit and the Pendulum - this was nice. Lance Henriksen in one of his best performances as the Grand Inquisitor Torquemada. He makes this movie, an the others (among whom Jeffrey Combs) follow at a respectable distance, they are allowed to be with Lance in this movie. The storyline is nice, it is not so much horror, only the torturing actually fits into the genre, and some religious delirious stuff. But, I still enjoyed this movie thoroughly, it is a shame that the DVD transfer is done so poorly on the disc I own. Highly recommended!
20 Million Miles to Earth - a Harryhausen classic, with a block of slime which transfers into a mini Godzilla, which grows rapidly to become a respectable monster. After that, the rest of the film goes like any Godzilla movie, so if you have seen one (or more) of those, you will know how this one goes. It plays out in Italy, and since I'm off to there tomorrow, it was nice to see the monster walk around on the Forum Romanum and inside the Colosseum. Effects are stop-motion mostly, and sometimes look really childish, but since this is from 1957, it is understandable. Recommended if you like classic monster stuff.

Phenomena - I'm an Argento fan and I love Jennifer Connelly, so this should be jackpot for me. It starts out slowly, but when the movie starts to develop, you really get into it. It's about a girl with a supernatural link to insects, who begins a study at an international school for girls in Switzerland. There is not so much use of colour as in other Argento movies, but the music is great and ads to the already strong atmosphere. Connelly delivers in all aspects, the gore is nicely timed and there is enough of it. Highly recommended!
The New York Ripper - a Fulci slasher which is really that. Although this is essentially a thriller, the killings are sometimes very gory and therefore gets more horror at times. The storyline is good, there are several suspects for being the killer, and you switch from one to the next during the movie according to "evidence" you get on screen. I dare you to guess it right from the beginning! Recommended.

Cloverfield (2008): I saw this last night on TV. It was way better than expected. The camera work did not feel so shaky as described by some of you guys. It is about a group in New York celebrating a friend's last day in the city. The city is attacked by a huge alien creature. The whole movie is shown as camera footage shot by one of the group members. The creature was nicely done and since the CGI took place in the dark (as pointed out by Slayer a couple of times) it was not that obvious. The scares and effects are good. I've just read that in the very last scene you get an explanation of where the alien came from. That is a nice thing that probably started several discussions about the movie later on. Recommended.
The Lost Room (2006): This is the mini-series encoded by Rogue. It was so original that I enjoyed it very much. The characters are great and so is the cast. It is about some kind of (it is not explained in the end - so I am not sure) anomaly that lead to objects coming into our world from a parallel universe. The objects have strange features like a comb being able to stop the time for 10 seconds, a key opening any door to a room (the lost room I guess) that leads to the parallel universe, a bus ticket that can teleport you to some place... There are people trying to get hold on the objects, because they want to bring them all together and experiment with them. The story is always interesting and suspenseful. Recommended. The only thing I didn't like is that in the end a lot of things were left unexplained and some strings of the series seemed to be unnecessary. I've read that they wanted to create a longer series. Maybe that's the reason.

I think Cloverfield was a surprise shock at how much I enjoyed it.. I refused to watch it for ages due to my pre-conceptions. If u have been avoiding it for any reason.. like it is hand held pov style... I think u should check it out.
