Enjoyable in the no brainer category, yes. Not a classic or a good film, no.

House with Laughing Windows - good giallo, I enjoyed this one very much. It must have served as inspiration for other Italian filmmakers, as I recognised several things from later movies in this one: the fact that the main character is a painting restorator working in a church returns in Soavi's La Chiesa and the fact that a character gets murdered just before he can reveal information about some mystery is something which returns in several Argento movies. The mystery remains a mystery very long, which is a big plus. It is difficult to guess, and when you do, almost immediately something happens to prove your guess wrong. It has some horrorish aspects to it, but don't expect loads of gore or anything. Highly recommended for storyline and atmosphere.

Pig Hunt - gory movie about a group of townspeople going on a hunt. There is a legendary boar in the woods, and the local rednecks are willing to help hunt it down. This goes out of hand (for a good reason) and from then on, the townspeople become the hunted, instead of the hunters. There are wild animals, hippies, rednecks and a lot of gore to enjoy. Drawback is the poor acting at times, but luckily the best actors survive the longest ;) Recommended, I had great fun watching this.

Oblivion 2: Backlash - after a 5 minute rerun of part 1 this movie actually starts. This means I have to postpone watching part 1, I feel a bit spoiled now. The characters are very cartoony, I liked Lash a lot. The whole western/scifi mix and everything that happens is also quite cartoony, but it is all for laughs, so that's OK. The monsters are hilarious and so is the storyline. This film has the Charles Band magic and cuteness dripping all over. If you like Band's style, or are into weird mixes, this is for you.

Slime City - haha, this one was very bad! A young man gets into his new apartment with a seductive neighbour on the same floor. Plans are for him and his girlfriend to move in together, but the neighbour and other things prevent that from happening. In the meantime, the young man has become some sort of infected, and from time to time his face turns into a slimey mess. To stop this, he has to kill (yeah, the logic of it eluded me too). I have to give this movie an award for one of the very best endfight scenes I have ever seen in a bad movie. It is so fake that I woke up my wife with my laughter. This is simply a MUST SEE for those who enjoy this.

Tales of an Ancient Empire - O...M...G... unbelievable! They still make this kind of crap! I thought I was in for a modern day version of the fantasy movies from the 70s/80s, but it turned out to be some sorry excuse for a film. Where to start? Bad acting, incoherent storyline, glued together by useless boards with "Tale 4: the Reckoning" etc. on it, terrible editing, "effects" by quickly showing a series of images each for half a second during a minute, stupid, stupid, stupid. It is a mix between fantasy and vampire crap like Twilight, because the vampires aren't monsters, just converted people. Bwegh. The vampires all talk muffled, probably because of the cheap ass vampire teeth they are wearing. Running time was 85 minutes, but after 65 minutes the movie ends and you get even more incoherent images, it looks like they just added the "deleted scenes" to the end of the movie, as the images contain storyline which doesn't make sense at that pont and even shows people who died previously. Terrible, terrible movie. Avoid at all costs.

The Mutilator - predictable 80s slasher. Group of kids goes to island and they get killed off one by one. Your first gues will be correct and the film doesn't make any effort to conceal the identity of the murderer. Therefore a lot of possibilities are out of the window from starters. Atmosphere is so so. The cuteness and innocence which 80s movies always seem to hold for me is present, but all else is below average. If you want a nice 80s slasher, there are plenty possibilities to pick a different one.

Legion - Alien rip-off which can't come out of its rip-off/copy-state. All the time while viewing you remember how all this was done better in Alien. Storyline is similar, you don't get to see the alien until short before the end, etc. Only big difference is that the alien turns into someone infested and the soldiers have to fight him. In Alien of course, the enemy is the alien itself, and infested people die soon. Pretty crappy overall, but I'm not burning my eyes out for seeing this.

Necrophobia - I came across this Dutch slasher when I was searching eBay and I ripped it because there was only a VHS rip out by that time. Yesterday I finally watched it and I must say that I waspleasantly surprised. My expectations are always low for a Dutch movie (unless it is from the past 5 years), so I was happy to see that this one hour slasher is actually quite good. The main character is acted out very well and so i the psychiatrist. The women aren't played that well unfortunately, especially the one with the most screentime. But, a nice gem for all horror fans with enough gore for if you don't like the story. Highly recommended. Grab it while you can, I reshared my rip for the occasion: viewtopic.php?t=17375

The Keep - quite some famous actors in this one: Gabriel Byrne, Ian McKellan and Scot Glenn play major parts in this movie and they carry much of its weight. Which is good, because the story is somewhat lacking at certain points. Atmosphere is great and acting is good, but the monster was a bit confusing to me. Only the red eyed variant was clear to me (and I believe it was a shape of the monster, just like the cloud-shaped monster). The ending was a bit vague and came quite sudenly for me. It would have fitted when there were some 10 more minutes made after that scene to make it more complete. Recommended, it is a good movie with some minor flaws.

Dogs Of Hell (aka Rottweiler) - this was boring, the dog-action is minimal, the characters are uninteresting and the image is a bit bleak, which doesn't add to the viewing pleasure. In some scenes the dgs attak and then we get to see some gore which is nice. These moments are far too rare, though. If you want a goo dog horror, watch Cujo instead.

Surf Nazis Must Die - I wasn't sure if I had seen this one before, I seemed to remember having seen a cult movie with a punk-ish gang with swastikas on a beach, but the image in my mind never passed on the screen while watching this, so it must have been a different flick. It is an 80s gang-flick and just because one of those gangs chose swastikas to use as a symbol, it stands out a bit. But the story or anything else in this movie is nothing special. The way some black mother ends all this gang-stuff is hilarious and luckily for the movie this is the latter half of it, so most people will keep nice thoughts after removing the disc from their player. I'd say watch this only with friends a large case of beer.

Because I have not much time to watch movies this weekend, I had my Halloween movienight yesterday. I was aiming for watching 4-5 movies which were all good. Starting with a '77 Cronenberg, it was All American 80s after that.

Rabid - creepy movie about a woman who gets in an accident and after that recovers but isn't the same anymore. Reminded me of Cronos a bit, where there is also that feeling that you know something is gonna happen, but the characters in the movie don't (yet). It had something Outbreak-ish to it, too. Cronenberg is a master in atmosphere and creepiness. Highly recommended.

Silver Bullet - a werewolf movie where the wolf only has a small role. I had read about the wolf being so fake that it took away all tension when you saw it. I thought it was OK enough. No, it doesn't look real, but which werewolf does really? Gary Busey does a nice job portraying the cool uncle Red, and Lost's Terry O'Quinn tries to hold control over the town's populace as its sheriff. In the end it is not as big a surprise who the werewolf is, but they don't smack it in your face from the beginning, so that's nice. Recommended.

The Lost Boys - heh, that was Corey Haim twice in a row, only he can walk now and tries to look fashionable ;) Really fun movie, some stuff from it I had seen before, like the scene where the Frog brothers are testing someone to see if he is a vampire. It appeared very familiar to me. I hadn't seen the entire film for sure, though, as there was much I didn't recognise. The 80s feeling of cuteness and innocence (in a way, it still is horror of cours) which makes me a sucker for 80s movies is all present in this one. Therefore I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

The Blob - I had already seen the original with Steve McQueen and the angry 100 grams of jelly wallowing through the miniature houses. This was totally different. It looked great! The effects were superb at times, and only a few times it was clearly visible that the actors were in front of a blue screen. This also has an Outbreak-like twist in the pot and it is nicely done. I laughed a few times because of some good jokes and the ending was classic. Highly recommended.

Return of the Living Dead part II - another two-timer, this time it was Michael Kenworthy, as he was in The Blob as well as in this one. I knew about the soundtrack trouble on this movie, so whenever it appeared that there wasn't gonna be any talking any time soon, I switched to the French track to listen to the cool music instead of the clinical synth crap on the English track. For several scenes this meant minutes long enjoying a great soundtrack, with an occasional French outcry. I sincerely hope that when this comes to BluRay, they put the good music to the the Englsih track too. Zombies are weird in this movie (as well as in part 1, btw) and some can run and others can't. Although I like the classical zombies better, the whole atmosphere in the movie (aimed on fun) makes up for it. Recommended, maybe even highly.

Blood Creek - this occult thriller starts out pretty nice, we are in the 1930s and some weird guy is visiting a framer's family. You get a creepy feeling about what is gonna happen and then we switch to the present. In the present there is Dominic Purcell who has had a traumatsing experience and it is interesting to see how he and his brother are gonna solve it. After a while, however, you will notice that tension is lost and when it gets to the point, this movie isn't scary or full of tension anymore, it is only ridiculous. The "monster" or demon or occult thing is really over the top. There is some really ugly CGI, especially when the thing is tearing its own face apart (why does it do that, by the way?). Nice premise, but they blow it in the mainpart of the movie.

First episode of 'The Walking Dead', at first I had to get use to the some what slower pace but I defenitly want to see the rest of the episodes now that I've finished episode one. I probably shold start reading the comic as well, but it might be better to do that after I've seen all the episodes. Recommended

Succubus - Franco wanted to make another tit-flick, so he brushed up some old ideas, put them together and called it Succubus. At least, it looks like it was produced like this. Kind of hap snap, with a lack of storyline and long scenes with erotic dancing or sex. Somehow we are supposed to see how the main character loses herself in the role she plays for a profession, but it doesn't really cut clear. Weird and vague. If that's your thing, go for it.

The Giant Gila Monster - nice classic monster movie, coloured for our modern day viewing pleasure. The storyline is insanely correct: even the dragracer gangs are made of boys behaving nicely and singing songs about God. The monster is of course a regular Gila Monster filmed in an all too obvious terrarium, together with some miniature cars and a toy train. The fire looks really, really small. There were some attempts at humour at which my grandparents would have laughed probably. I'm just way too late for 50s humour. Recommended for bad moviefans.

Watchers (1988): In a research facility the USA tried to develop a new kind of weapon. An intelligent dog and a strong hunter which are thelepatically linked. The experiments went wrong as the hunter always killed the dog. The last surviving dog escapes after an accident at the facility. Unfortunately one hunter escapes too and is up to killing the dog. Well the hunter turns out to be a monster that is killing humans too. The hunter is chased by government agents and the dog is hidden by a teenager. Things get messy as the hunter get closer to the dog. Interesting flick with Corey Haim in it. It was not scary enough for my taste. Recommended though.

Triangle (2009): This movie reminded me of Los cronocrímenes aka. Timecrimes from 2007 (<- major spoiler). It is about a young woman and some friends who get onto an abandoned ship after their boat overturns. It is hard to tell anymore without spoiling anything. Maybe just a few more words: it gets pretty bloody after that. I ejnoyed the movie, but thought it had some illogical things in it - but that probably comes with the subject/genre. Recommended.

Tiresia (2003)

Tiresia is at the same time woman and man, according to Greek Mythology. Here, Tiresia is a Brazilian transexual living with her brother in the outskirts of Paris. Terranova, an admirer of aesthetics, is a dreamer. His obsession with Tiresia leads him to kidnapping her. However, without her regular dose of hormones, Tiresia gradually starts to change back to a male. Displeased, Terranova blinds Tiresia and abandons her in the countryside. There, Anna takes charge of Tiresia, helping her recover.

Monsters (2010)

This was a really fun film, I enjoyed it a lot. Way more drama than it is sci-fi or horror, but it makes films like Cloverfield look like the big smelly piles of horse manuere they actually are. There's a 720p HDTV rip of it out so you could be able to find some decent quality copies.

Basic plot is that mexico and the south of the US become 'infected zones' where these giant octopus like monsters walk around and fuck things up. The military actively patrols and blows things up. A guy who is a photographer is down in mexico and he gets told by his boss to take his daughter back to the states. The only safe way is by sea but due to the migration cycle of these monsters they end up having to go by land and cross the 'infected zone'.

Basic border cross story.

Mmm, forgot to post yesterday. The day before yesterday I watched:

Frankenstein Created Woman - nice classic with a lot of atmosphere, coming from Hammers studios. It is not a real Frankenstein story, it is more about transplanting a soul from one body into another. The new person takes revenge on the people who wronged him/her (it is a man's soul in a woman's body) in the past. Quite OK, good acting, cheesiness is kept to a minimum. Recommended.

Die! Die! My Darling! - this turned out not o be a horror, more a psychological thriller. A woman is visiting the mother of her ex-lover who died in a car accident. The mother keeps the woman in order to reunite the two. The woman lives in a room without any food while the mother is slightly going crazy. Great acting, but it was not really my cup of tea. It is a good film, though.

The Janitor - a Troma adopted film, so you know what to expect. Lousy storyline, bad acting, over the top gore and some real unfunny jokes. Whereas I can enjoy these movies, it is a shame that Lloyd Kaufmann himself shows up in every one of them. He is so damn unfunny, the best would be that if he shows up his head gets blown off with a shotgun immediately. Most of the gore is great and I liked it how the janitor is killing people with his cleaning equipment. The job interview is great too. Some nice sorority boobs thrown into the mix and there you have your B-movie. Only for bad movie/Troma fans.

And yesterday I watched:

Lust for a Vampire - another Hammer classic. I liked this one better, the storyline was more interesting: a writer visits the outskirts of a region, where a castle is said to hold an ancient family of vampires. Close by is a school for girls. This, and the fact that this is from the 70s, is a great premise of course ;) Nice looking chicas made up for the over the top acting of some of the vampires. The doctor, (hollow voice) "A heart attack" was the worst of them. Ending a bit exaggerated, but OK. Recommended.

Good Morning... and Goodbye! - sort of a soap movie with triangular and even more complicated relationships. What makes this different from the middle of the road cinema is of course the presence of big breasted women. The main character doesn't reveal them at all, but you can get a good look at them anyway. She is almost the only person who acts decently, all others have trouble to express the emotions written down in the script. Music is fantastic, the rest isn't. Only for bachelor parties.

Warlock 2: Armageddon - not so bad, this sequel. A shame that the rip wasn't so good, playback was jittery throughout the movie and there was a lot of blockiness. The storyline is somewhat the same as part 1, only this time he needs stones, not a book. It is a good thing that the warlock is played again by Julian Sands. His birth is hilarious, and some other effects are from a kid's magician's box. The warrior stuff was a bit ridiculous, so I had a few laughs too. Recommended for bad moviefans.

The Skeleton Key (2005): This movie was about a nurse that is in for a new job in the country. The house she has to work at look like the one from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Only two people are living in the house. An old woman and her sick (can' talk, can't move ...) husband. The nurse (Kate Hudson - who I for some reason don't like) has to take care of the husband. There are some sort of voodoo ghosts in the house. Well this movie kind of sucketysucked. It was boring and unscary. Kate Hudson's acting was terrible imho. John Hurt playing the sick husband could do more without talking and moving much, than Kate. The twist at the end was meh and I kind of didn't care about the dull characters. Not recommended.

Watched The Horde last night. One of the better new zombie flicks I've seen in a while with some decent splatter and a fun group of survivors. The action, narrative, and pace worked for me, but I had difficulty with the filmmakers take on the actual zombies. Some were a real bitch to kill, some could be mowed down, and I don't think anyone figured out that you need to shoot the fuckers in the head. There was a prime gut ripping moment (guy fighting off zombies on roof of car) that ended with nary an exposed intestine. I liked the vet with the fire axe, but wanted to see that fire axe get some more use. Overall, it was quite an enjoyable.

Achtung! The Desert Tigers - a nazisploitation taking place entirely in North Africa, well, that was new to me. Another thing which surprised me was that it really took a while before I stopped thinking it was in fact an action movie. The action sequences are superbad: all soldiers look alike, they all carry SMG's, they all shoot in the ground, they all jump forward off roofs when hit, grenades make large fireballs and to top it off: at an execution, the mercyshot given by the commanding officer is obviously missing the heads of the executed. Food for bad moviefans! The exploitation part is nice, the nazi leader is way over the top, the torture is extreme in some cases (cutting off genitalia), but it is so badly done it is hardly shocking. The nazi woman doctor is the weirdest: one moment she is torturing people, the next she begs to be the S&M slave of her nurse, who is from the UK, btw (even in the story!). Bad movie galore, for everyone else: avoid.

Devil's Playground - British zombiemovie. I have seen good ones (Shaun...) and bad ones (Doghouse) an I wondered where this one would end up. It has fast zombies: they act like athletic monkeys, which is sometimes really stupid, when they can't outrun a guy wounded to his leg. The spreading through London is nicely done, the dilemma of letting one live or kill him before he turns i cliche but performed well enough. Some actors, well, I wonder what they were doing in this movie (Sean Pertwee is big on the opening titles, but he is in it for maybe 5 minutes) and others try to make the best of it. The entire film is a bit chaotic, but that fits the story. I liked the storyline about the woman being pregnant. All in all it was OK, nothing really special. Better than Doghouse, not as good as Shaun.

Watched a few yesterday...

Sombre (1998) - It's about a serial killer who follows the Tour de France, killing prostitutes along the way. It's fantastic cinema and quite disturbing. There are also some beautiful naked french actresses in it.

Dead End (2003) - I can't turn down anything with Ray Wise in it, but this one was a real stinker. They shied away from showing some gore that seemed fairly promising and the ending was heavy-handed and predictable. On the plus side, Wise's wife is named Laura in the film, so you get to hear him say "Laura" a bunch of times.

Carne (1991) - Gaspar Noe's debut, this was a great film. At only 40 minutes, Carne is a fantastic film in iteslf, but also gives a glimpse into themes and techniques that Noe would go on to explore in his later work. It's a real "slice of life" if you know what I mean

I also finally got around to watching the first episode of The Walking Dead. It didn't disappoint and I'm looking forward to the second episode.

The Last Man On Earth - the original movie made after the "I Am Legend" novel. It was very slow at start, but I got into it after a while. The infected are really dumb, and there are also moments where you wonder how Morgan gets his food when he has been alone on earth for three years, but it is a nice storyline and the ending is bleak. I haven't seen I Am Legend with the Smith guy, but I heard a lot of bad stuff about the ending. For those disappointed, there is this movie.

Common Law Cabin - a Meyer vehicle to show more big breasted women. This time a group of people is stuck at a cabin, left to the evil plans of a guy who wants to buy the cabin and the ground it stands on. The intrigue is kind of superficial, but it plays out nice enough. More sex than in Good Morning... and also better looking babes. Music was somewhat less good. I'm hoping for more epic movies of him from the 70s. The 60s ones all fall short imo.

Massacre at Central High - a guy stands up for people being bullied and the bullies get back at him for it: now he is crippled. His revenge is all but subtle. He starts killing the bullies and although the DVD cover tells me that "there is no limit to the ingenuity of his murderous imagination", he kills almost all in the same way. The overkill way. It made me laugh. Audio was horrible, I had to crank it up over twice the normal amount. Only for bad moviefans.

Nightmare Castle - bwegh, boring! It is about some supernatural ghost thingy whoch comes to take revenge for her death while her former husband tries to inherit the wealth of her family. Most classics which are great have an intersting sotry, and that's where this lacks. It is a boring story! Then facing the facts that sfx and interesting scenery is absent, there is little to nothing to enjoy. Avoid.

Mudhoney - a lame/tame Meyer film with almost no boobs. It is in black and white, maybe because it is supposed to act out in the 30s. Storyline sucked on this one too. Usually that is not a problem with this kind of films, but then we have to be compensated with tons of luscious tits or other vulgarities, and it doesn't happen in this one. Therefore: boring. Avoid.

Creepshow 2 - this wasn't my evening. After having sat through two heaps of boring crap, I started this one almost knowing for sure that it would be good. I was disappointed. Two of the three stories were very lame. It looked like these stories weren't good enough to put in part 1. Well, if you conclude that, just ditch them and don't bother releasing them anyway. By the looks of it it could all be cool, with the living wooden Indian and the slimy creature in the lake but it was dumb and lame. Only the last story (the one which I liked the least upon reading its plot), "The Hitchhiker", brought back a little of the Creepshow feeling I had when watching part 1. If you have both these movies, please watch part 2 first. If you have seen part 1 already, just skip to "The Hitchhiker".
