You can hardly call this remake. Only the basic idea was taken from the Prive movie, but it was developed into a completely different story.

hence a remake. You just defined what a remake is in my opinion. You don't have to do what they did with Psycho to be called a remake, you just have to take the basic concept of previous movie, be it plot, story or even basic idea, and then rebottle it, either through total reconstruction or simple polishing.

Cronenberg's The Fly was as much a remake as Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Carpenter's The Thing :)

Shame that this won't get 3-D but Final Destination 3 will.

Perhaps you're right. I always thought a remake is when you more or less adapt the whole plot, changing it TO SOME EXTENT, but not completely. Here the whole story is changed, therefore I'd say Cronenberg's Fly was INSPIRED by the original movie, but was not a remake.

As I said, perhaps I'm wrong and a remake is when you change a movie beyond any recognition...

I think your getting the definition of the word wrong, remake means to take a concept and to change it or simply do the same thing again:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=remake
Quote:
To make again or anew.

The act of remaking.
Something in remade form, especially a new version of an earlier movie or song

n : something that is made again or anew; "it is a remake of an old film" v : make anew [syn: refashion, redo, make over]

I highlighted two bits, because your taking the other meaning of it. "to make again". If your staying true to the word, it means that based up, refashioning and total reworking is all correct as well.

That can exclude something that is based upon something, for example Return of the Living Dead is not a remake of Night of the Living Dead, although it is based upon the that (it uses the zombies from it and refers to it ), however, Return of the Living Dead part 2 is actually a remake of Return of the Livind Dead. As it takes the first's story and then retells it (and hence why half the cast comes back to life in the second one  ).

In the same sense, the Fly takes the basic idea of the original, and then reworks it. The story is 'remade', and hence it is a remake in the truest sense of the word.

I wouldn't claim they are anything alike though, that would be just silly  A remake of this fashion is how most remakes should be attempted. Removing what doesn't work, or just taking the basic idea and starting from scratch.

so "jeeves & wooster" would be completely lost on you eh spud :P

"jeeves" is a very british thing, any true brit should know it, i say the youth of today the old world is lost on them tut tut :?

it seems no-one is ever called jeeves except butlers, i expect this dates abck to some old time when butler were known as "jeeves" or some other crazy story that the old 200 year old hag at the corner will waffle on about, but nevermind, anyway remakes suck, especially american ones... did anybody see the atrocious damage tehy did to thomas the tank engine by remaking it for america :o hehe  ... ok hollywood, time to pay :matrix:

Not only that, the director has no previous experience except 3 short films.
