hehe... MGS, well i mean i guess it was kind of original in its own way, and people enjoyed it, but i thought games like Rogue Spear just showed it up for being a crappy tactical game, and a hell of a lot of action-adventure games at the same time were a lot more playable, engaging and enjoyable. My little brother loves the MGS, i remember me having an arguement to the same effect, i'd rather played on Soul Reaver (came out a bit after but for some reason i don't remember playing much of MGS before, although i'd completed it before then so go figure how enjoyable i thought it was

)
Has anyone played mgs recently out of interest? My little brother was playing it again about 3 weeks ago, i had a quick bes and it was even worse than i remember which is why i posted about it being a crap film rather jokingly. The underwater intro made me laugh though, good old psx
With MGS2, that kind of got hyped and then didn't really do much on delivery, GTA3 stole all of its thunder and for intents and purposes was the star game, got all the hype and in that case, good on it I thought it played rather well.
I hate racing games, but Gran Tourismo came out the same year as mgs, hyped to buggery too as i recall, but at least it was a solild game and much more deserving in the scope of racing games (i preferred Arcade/driving games mind, but that's subjective). Tenchu came out then too, i played that one more than mgs.

that game had one of the tightest stories ive ever come across for a video game. |
hmmm... well i suppose as far as launch titles and games around at that time it was a baby step up so i can see that. Its the gameplay that doesn't deliver. My main fault is that its a fps shooter on a console that doesn't play them well next to a pc, and in isolation come to think of it. it wasn't really that revolutionary and it got a tad boring for me. I'm by no means a fan of futuristic fps though, although i played red faction and that was quite good, wasn't hyped or anything but it was kind of simplistic for the console market. You ever play that one? They messed up a lot that could have made it better but it was quite fun.
It was no goldeneye, it was more of a perfect dark. ie. more but less (Speaking of perfect dark, i hear they are making the next one as an xbox2 launch title, lets see if that gets hyped... i'm unfortunately confident its not going to be that good, like the first one really)
Halo is alright for multiplayer, i just don't really view it as anything better than "okay, i guess". It was made out to be like the second coming of jesus though, just like mgs. At least with halo they didn't start bumming bungie as some kind of super artistic revolutionary project, that's another thing that pissed me off when i played mgs, to find out rather painfully it wasn't actually that good.
All i'm saying is if something like Splinter Cell or something came out at the same time as halo, halo wouldn't have gotten the time of day. It just seemed like the best choice to hype, and it probably was the best choice, i just don't think it was anywhere near the best game or anything. I got halo and halo 2 but i will never play them again, thats the main reason i don't think they really earned their keep.
Storyline wise, that's why i go for action-adventure, way more engrossing. There's a lot of games that have a better story than halo though.
You mentioned hl, yes it was hyped, but it wasn't really dissatisfying or really underacheived the hype by any stretch. As for HL2, yeah it was hyped, it was very, very good whilst it lasted, but Rome Total War was the best game out that year despite not receiving the hype as the title of the year until it landed.
oh yeah.. something on topic... er... i guess its a tad late to try and tie it to the topic now
