The Pact II - since The Pact was one of those few movies which actually succeeded in scaring me, I was curious about this sequel. According to descriptions it continies where part one left off, but it has been a while, so it took me some time to get into the story. Not having a clear storyline didn't help either in that department. The second half has a clearer plot, but by then you have been watching a mediocre attempt at being a scary thriller (no horror elements at all apart from some "visions" in the first half). Redeeming factor is Camilla Luddington, a very cute actress who is worth watching for 90 minutes. Of course you might start wondering why they even bothered trying to make a storyline around her, as it falls so flat. There are a few moments in which you can start to feel some tension, but before it starts to really build. it is over again. The final plot is quite dumb. Advice: watch the picture below for two minutes and save the other 92 for something else.

Hellions - because it was Halloween I wanted to watch some Halloween themed film, so I chose this one. I actually saw trick-or-treaters in my neighbourhood for the first time in my life (Halloween is usually not celebrated that way in my country), which spiced up the atmosphere a little bit. OK, the movie: directed by the guy who gave us Pontypool I had hopes that this might actualy be something OK. The story is about Dora Vogel, a 17-year old who is in love with her boyfroiend Jace and skipping class to chill with him. On the eve of Halloween she gets to hear that she is pregnant, so her world collapses. Struggling to tell anyone, she stays away from the festvities and decides to stay home on Halloween. It doesn't take long before she gets the scariest Haalloween night ever: some costumed kids start terrorising her and she now has to fight them as well as her own fears. This is portrayed in a dreamlike fashion, with the extensive use of coulurised filtering on the camera, and I think it really works. Maybe this is the fan speaking, but I don't understand the low ratings for this film a bit. I'm not sure if I udnerstood it all correctly, but Dora's fight with the little demons, who are obviousdly out for her unborn baby, symbolises her personal fight with herself and her thoughts and actions. Very well done I would say, some great acting there too, especially by the main character who carries the movie all by herself. Good ending, too. Highly recommended, very refreshing to actually see something good after loads of poo lately.

Bombshell Bloodbath - thinking this was a slasher type movie, I was surprised to see zombies in it pretty quick after the film began. It's about a scientist with a lot of daughters and when he is trying to revive his dead wife he creates tons of zombies. When one of his daughters gets infected by the zombie virus, she also keeps her human feelings. I had seen this before in Wyrmwood, although there the chick could also control the zombies. In this one it is just an immortal girl with an appetite for blood. I had some great fun with this film, it was never inteneded to be anything serious, which I love! Having fun making the film almost always results in the viewers having fun watching it, at least, when it is not total garbage of course. But, this one isn't total garbage. Even though the storyline is simple, the ay it is presented to you is very nice. I had great fun watching the line of daughters assisting their father in the project, and hearing the male assistant talk to a corpse, saying "you were so much hotter with a face", good fun! Atmosphere was top notch, acting was not always superb, but I had a good time watcching this so if you like indie films with a touch of the past, go watch this one. Recommended if you want to have fun watching a horrorfilm.

Fable: Teeth Of Beasts - I downloaded and watched this movie because of Melantha Blackthorne, after having seen She-Demons of the Black Sun, I wanted to see if the other movies she was in were equally bad and stupid, Well, this one is. Melantha plays Lilith Noir, some sort of a cop who serves in Fable, a Sin City-like town but without any of the qualities that Sin City has, both as a town and as a movie/story. She has to fight demons and retrieve some sort of a secret wepaon, but I'm not really sure since the storyline was a bit vague on that point. The fact that almost everyone except Melantha was mumbling a lot (with ony Spanish subs available) didn't help either. I had a great time watching the dumbness in this film, like the drawing of a star of David which should have been a pentagram. Also a circle with three dots in it and a sad looking mouth, woohoo scary graffiti there in the sewers of Fable! If you want to have a laugh and watch a big breasted woman dressed in leather all the time and talk tough, go for it I'd say. Recommended for bad moviefans.

Ghoul - very much inspired by The Blair Witch Project, this film takes a girl and two guys to Ukraine, where they want to interview a guy who allegedly ate people in the 90s. This guy, Boris, was convicted and since he is out of jail now, he cpuld be interviewed. With their guide Valeriy and their interpreter Katarina they end up in a cabin in the woods, but Boris isn't coming. Out of boredom and drunkenness (the vodka is consumed in big quantities), they invoke a spirit when they find a table with a pentagram on it. The local witch Inna, whom was brought by Valeriy, warns them not to do so, but they don't listen and ow an evil spirit is unleashed. They can only leave the house when they do what it wants. It starts out with simple things, like digging up some bones, but it goes more extreme everytime, and the danger of getting killed is getting closer and closer. At first, I thought this film was done pretty well. In the second half. however, it goes out of control. Lots of darkness, shaky imagery, and sreams in the background have to fill up the time until the endcredits start to roll. Usually the first part of a horrorfilm is boring, you want to get to the action asap. In this film, the second half is the boring part. The puzzle of the spirit (who is it, what happened here) is actually way more interesting than the supernatural action which follows. At one moment I checked how much time was left because I felt bored and I thought it would be over soon, but it was still over half an hour to go! Bad sign. Katarina looked like a sweetheart, but I'm never gonna watch this again.

Late Phases - pretty original take on the werewolf theme. A blind veteran, Ambrose McKinley, moves to a new home in a suburb for the elderly. On his first night, the woman next door is brutally killed, and his dog is also fatally wounded in an attack. Ambrose wants to find out what's causing this, and when he has a hunch, he starts preparing himself for the next full moon. In the meantime, his new neighbours are very suspicious of him: they don't want him to ride on the bus to church anymore and they call the police to blame him as soon as anything out of the ordinary is happening. Apart from the attacks and his preparation, Ambrose is also struggling with the relationship he has with his son and daughter-in-law. This story of old age is actually more some sort of a family drama, but with the werewolf story in the background, it actually becomes interesting. I really liked the acting in this one, and the effects were great. Not because they looked like the best sfx ever, but because they were so very muich old school and I simply love that. I'm very curious about the other films from this director (Adrián García Bogliano). Recommended.

Unfriended - Laura Barns, a teenage girl, has committed suicide and Blair Lily, her best friend, is watching a YouTube clip about it. Then her boyfriend calls her on Skype and while they are having an intimate videoconversation, a group videoconversation is starting, with all their friends. In this group, there is an unknown person present, who talks like it's Laura. All friends wonder who this might be, they are convinced that it is some sick joke. But reporting the person fails, and the person knows a whole lot of personal information about them all. Is this Laura's spirit back from the dead? A fatal game starts online and the teens are not so safe behind their screens anymore ... Original film which entirely plays out on computerscreens. Acting looked OK, you mostly see faces only, which might make the acting job harder. Because there are quite some emotions at play, this is pretty well done. Story is unbelievable of course, but has a nice development. If you want to see something new, watch this. Recommended.

Altar - aka The Haunting of Radcliffe House. Meg Hamilton has taken up a job on restoring an old house for a rich American banker who wants it put back in original condition. She takes her family with her to live in the housde while she i wq\orking on it. Her husband, an artist, tries to find some inspiration while the kids loathe the fact that there is no TV and internet in the house. When her first contractor fails to show up because of an accident, she has to find a new one, but he bails out as soon as they find something curious: a circular painting o the ground, with a part of a face missing. During that time, both Meg and her family start seeing people who aren't really there. These ghosts don't look too unrealistic, which adds to the atmosphere (for example: Meg has a conversation with a normal looking man of whom she later finds out that he died in 1845). Meg refuses to believe in the supernatural for a long time, but when her husband is going mad slowly but steadily and her daughter has hired a ghost whisperer who tells them that there is a very strog aura in the house, she starts being suspicious. At the next appearance, they plan to leave the house, but even that is not so simple. Pretty run-of-the-mill ghost kovie, but well executed. Atmospheric, very nice location, good acting (both Matthew Modine and Olivia Williams are doing a great job). Recommended, especially if you don't really need to see something original.

Rage of the Yeti - bad cgi monsterflick with really unbelievable story behind it. An expedition is going to the Arctic to find a codex and to rescue the previous expedition, which is stranded (and had half of their members killed, which they find out upon arrival). A gazillionaire finances it all, and the members of the team are the usual suspects: a veterinarian mistaken for a medic, a couple who do travelling to the Arctic for a business and two adventurers with huge guns and cheeky oneliners. The "yetis" aren't actually yetis because the yeti lives in the Himalaya, and these creatures, as the film tries to explain, are remnants of a prehistoric mammal living on the North Pole. These cgi driven furballs kill everything in their sight and they have the possibility to change size depending on the camerashot ;) During the entire film I never got the impression that we actually were on the North Pole, because it was so obviously filmed in a studio, with bad cgi masking the fact that the actors were on a staged set. Timefiller without any redeeming qualities, I even fell asleep for a short while. Only for fans of fake snow I guess.

Death Machine - aka Doomsday. Two titles which have been used before, mmm. If you make an aka, at least try to make it an original one, I'd say. But maybe it was on purpose, who knows. There was a time when I would watch a British movie with high expectations, because usually it was a quality product. That time is in the past. After having seen several pretty boring or outright annoying horror and scifi flicks from the UK, I'm not even surprised anymore when I get to see English crap. This film is yet another example. You must have seen at least once in your life a film in which an alien lands on earth while he is being hunted by other aliens. This is very nice and cheap, because you only have to do one scene in space and then you can film the rest on earth. So we get a confused alien who gets some help from an English couple and we get loads of cgi. Especially the first 45 minutes were boring, after that you get a little bit more of the storyline (which is quite hard to follow in the beginning without subs - because they talk like robots through some sort of a radio thingy), but it remains pretty uninteresting. The ending was cheesy, acting nothing to write home about. I'd say skip it.

The Stranger - presented by Eli Roth, but that's usually a marketing strategy so I ignored that. The film is about a guy coming to a small community on a landtip overlooking a bay. He is looking for a certain woman, but he is being led to her grave. Soon after, he gets in a fight with some tough guys and is left for dead. A boy finds him and takes him home, but the man warsn the boy that he is dangerous so he wants to die, in order to protect the people around him. The boy doesn't understand and while the commissioner of the police (the father of the tough guy who beat up the man) is searching for him, the boy tries to look for help but is being hit and kicked by the tough guys. No more able to withhold himself, the man starts killing, and one of the tough guys is being infected by his blood, so he starts killing too. In order to save the rest of the townsfolk, they have to stop him now, but since the police is not on their hand, this is gonna be a hard task. It took me very long until I found out that this is actually a film about
Spoiler:
vampires
Pretty well done, the atmosphere was spot on, acting was good (sometimes a tqad wonky, but overall OK) and enough gore to go by. Recommended.

Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story - when doing an item on a team of workers who clean houses after they are vacated, the cameracrew of a local TV station bumps into a weird mystery. One family seems to have vanished just like that, all their furniture is still in place, it really looks like they were just there an hour ago. Upon finding a box o tapes they start researching and they find out about a mysterious figure in the background on many of the films. This faceless man comes closer over time, and after a while he is even stalking the cameraman. This guy, Milo, has trouble convincing his colleagues, reportergirl Sara and their new boss Charlie (not in the least because Milo used to date Sara and is very suspicious about Charlie's moving onto her - not without reason, btw). When he finally convinces them of the existence of "slender man", they start a quest in order to get rid of him. While the "slender man" is a creepy character, it isn't used in a scary way. It's more a "find the slender man in this picture" type of filming, which makes it a fun puzzle instead of a scary movie. I read that this was based on a webseries, but I had never heard of that before. I don't think I'm gonna watch any of that now that I have seen this film, because although this was pretty well done, it didn't interest me enough to follow up on it.

Robert The Doll - a family lays off their housekeeper Agatha, but before she leaves, she gives a present to the son of the family. This present, a large doll, is possessed with an evil spirit (or something) and does nasty thigns around the house. Of course his parents don't believe him when the son tells them it was the dol doing all that stuff, but after a while they do believe it and try to get rid of the doll, which is not as easy as it sounds. Another bad quality EVO rip with lots of blocking and artifacts, this film offers nothing new. If you have ever seen a doll movie, be it Dead Silence or Annabelle, you have seen it all. Worse is, that in this one the actors aren't as good. Especially the boy has lots of room for improvement. Couldn't grab me, forgettable film.

Dark Haul - the opening credits contain a story about twins, of which the boy is the 13th son of the 13th son, born in The New World. According to a prophecy, this is gonna be some demonic creature, and the babies indeed both have a tail. An order of Keepers is created to keep the demons in check so they can't create too much chaos. Centuries later (like vampires, demons can grow old), the twins are captive from a unit of Keepers who want to transport both to a more secure location. A good guy and a bad guy from the Keeper team are struggling to push through their plan to make things right. They need the girl in order to control the brother, but the girl has her own plans too, so at a certain moment, the brother escapes. Now they have to find him and recapture him in order to save the world, because the prophecy said that either beast or human will fall, and the Keepers don't want it to be the human, of course. Syfy film, but it wasn't as bad as usual. Acting was actually pretty OK, and storyline did make some sense. The beast is still ugly cgi, though, although they try to keepo those scenes at a minimum by not showing the beast in it's entirety too often, which is a good thing. Most Syfy films are sh*t, but this one was tolerable at least.

Visions - when I watched this, I got bored quickly with the loud bang scares in the first half of the film, and the predictability wasn't helping either. It was so bad, that I was often saying what was gonna happen and I was right every damn time! Afterwards, I read some reviewsd. whoch stated that this film borrowed a lot from A l'Interieur, and indeed: that's correct. It even looks like an American remake of that movie, they added a husband and a vinyard and some mysterious events which seem to have happened on the property, but that's it. The plot is quite OK, but the predictability and the rip-off had already killed the movie for me by then. A shame, it coud have really been something. If you haven't seen A l'Interieur, you might give this a try. Don't if you are pregnant ;)

Zombie Shark - another Syfy monsterflick with zero budget. It succeeds in showing sreentime to two nice pieces of eyecandy: Sloane Coe and Becky Andrews. Apart from this, this isn't anything more than a cheap ass comedy with sharks. Everytime something happened which was supposed to be scary, I laughed out loud and that was quite often. The story is ridiculous: a guy goes to an island with three girls and they are unaware of a huge storm coming. On the same island, there is a secret facility creating a vaccine to maker soldier's tissue revivable. They tested this on sharks for some unknown reason, and now there is a "zombie shark" out who can revive it's own tissue, and it can create more zombies by itself, both shark zombies and human zombies. Of course, the guy and the girls can't be saved because of the storm (which is never visually there on the island, btw). If you are up for some incredibly fake cgi gore, if you want to watch people do the dumbest stuff even in the face of mortal danger, then this is your thing. Only for bad moviefans I would say.

Some Kind of Hate - this film starts as a teenage drama about Lincoln, a death metal fan who is fed up with being picked on so he stans his bully in the cheek with a fork. He is sent to a youthcamp to get some sort of a re-education, to clear his mind, etc. bla bla. There, he meets Kaitlin, a troubled girl who seems yo like him more than just as friends. Unfortunately, in this camp there are also bullies and when Lincoln one day wishes they would all be dead, he accidentally summons an evil spirit of a girl named Moira, and she starts killing them off for Lincoln. All the pain and wounds which are inflicted on her, are experienced by her victim instead, so she stabs and cuts herself and in the end slits her throat to kill the bully. Lincoln doesn't like this, it's going way too far for him, but how can he stop her? Apart from this storyline, there is a second plot revolving around Moira, which explains why she is what she is. Acting is pretty good, I knew none of the actors, but they did a good job. Plot is interesting enough, gore is great. The spirit/ghost is not very ghostlike: she looks just like a very bloodied girl all the time. Not really a problem, but it would help if she had a tad more ghostlike appearance. Overall this is a decent film, (mildly) recommended.

FPS: First person Shooter - I thought this would be a bit boring and I was partially right. Almost the entire film is like you are playing a game, and when you have played DOOM in the past (especially parts one and two), then you will recognise a lot. The menu, the result screen (Kills: 100%, lol), the sounds, the cheat codes (really good fun they put that in), etc. The character uses oneliners from all kinds of movies, from Scarface via Evil Dead to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Funny reference sports, but the storyline is very thin and although the concept is cool, it shouldn't have been drawn out over 80 minutes. Recommended for old gamers.

Bloodsucking Bastards - starting off as a 2015 version of Clerks, we see an office where most of the team has made slacking a new lifestyle: they are gaming while making salescalls, throwing paperballs at weird colleagues, placing bets on everything as long as it isn't work-related and making fun of their boss Evan, who recently spoilt his chance to go out with the HR manager, a quite cute looking girl. When the big boss has an anouncement to make, Evan expects to become sales manager. Instead, a guy from his high school, with whom he had several quarrels in the past, becomes a new member of the team and takes the sales manager spot. From that moment on, things start to go wrong, in a strange way. A colleague is found dead in the toilet, another colleague is behaving strangely. Slowly but steadily Evan, together with one of his old-time friends and now colleague Tim, finds out what is behind all these strange happenings. A horrorcomedy which is worth watching. I thought it was quite funny, although there were little really good jokes (I guess the fun was more in the atmosphere). It was never scary or anything, but in the second half, the gore goes through the roof. Recommended if you want to have some fun.

Eaters - a bunch of friends go out on a tour through the desert, to do one of them a favour. On the way they see a car speeding, and at a rest stop, they meet a bikergang. When one of the girls of the group disappears, her boyfriend is enraged and convinced the bikers took her. So they set out to get her back, but the bikers don't have her. Instead, one of the friends (an ex-soldier) finds drugs in their truck so they are actually in quite some danger. Continuing the search, they end up ina ghosttown, but it is not as desolate as they might have thought. A group of "slendermen" is torturing and slaughtering a number of victims there, so now the friends have to try and survive. Very boring movie (it´s a mix between TCM and Slenderman things and it has all been done a thousand times before) and it's also a bad mvie. Effects aren't so bad, but man, the acting and dialogue: like they never did it before, never read the script and were taping it on the first take. I can laugh at that for a while, but not for 90 minutes, that is simply too much. I skipped through large parts of it because I got bored so fast and that's why I didn't lose the entire 90 minutes to it. I recommend everyone to skip all of the 90 minutes, so you can watch something bearable in that time.

The Sacrament - Ti West film about a religious cult. It is not so much horror as it is a thriller, as there is only some violence at the end and there is nothing supernatural about it. VICE is a vrew which does items on weird things and when Patrick, one of the crewmembers, receives a mysterious letter from his sister Caroline (who used to be a drug addict but is now clean and moved to a community which helped her to "heal herself"), they decide to follow up on it. So they travel to a distant country (it's never really clear where it is, but it has some tropical vegetation) in order to find the sister. When they arrive, at first they see some armed guards, but inside the community they only see happiness and joy. They get to interview the leader, called "Father", there is music and dancing so all seems fine, but they also get a message from some of the community members in which they ask for help so they can leave. When Patrick disappears, the other two VICE guys sense they are in danger and try to get Patrick back and then leave. However, the grand finale is then still to come. Disturbing story, which is based on real events where a community like this
Spoiler:
committed mass suicide
The film itself is quite OK, acting is good, but some things are a bit over the top, like Caroline
Spoiler:
committing suicide by pouring gasoline over herself and then set it on fire
If you are looking for some nice horror, then this is not the film you want to see, but if you are interested in weird religious cults, go for it.

Torment - a man and his son go on a weekend with the new member of the family, Sarah, the second wife of the man. Liam, the son, has trouble accepting her and the father is doing his best to make the family a unit. Soon after their arrival, they notice that people have been in their house and in the first night the local police officer gets murdered in his car in front of their door. This sets off a horrible night of chases and fights, culminating in a test for the father. Since I'm a dad myself, films in which a family is in danger get to me more than they used to. In the first half this influenced me while watching, but then the film went down the drain and I saw the film for what it really is: a very mediocre attempt at making a horror in which acting is average, the story is ok at first but spirals out of control and killings are mostly off screen therefore the gore is quite scarce. Some things near the end are too incredible to believe, even when watching movies like this, like what the father did: it felt forced in the storyline. First half is quite OK and Katherine Isabelle, well, I just really like watching her. The rest of the film is prety forgettable.

The Burning Dead - wow, haha! This must be one of the most original zombie ideas I have seen until now! Based on the story of the Donner Party, there is a volcano in the Sierra Nevada which is housing an evil spirit. Danny Trejo plays a local Cherokee chief (even though there aren't many Cherokees in California) who tells some kids the story about the evil spirit. The volcano is about to erupt, and the people nearby have to be evacuated. Of course, there is a vocanologist with his intern, a troubled family and some other people running around not evacuating. Upon eruption, green beams are launched from the volcano and when they land in the ground, a zombie crawls out from under the surface. That was a really cool idea! Unfortunately, the execution of this idea is very sloppy at best. While there is still some cool stuff, like the zombies grabbing someone and causing burns by doing so, and the goo coming from their mouths is lava, it all looked a bit ugly. The cgi was supermeh and the acting of the human characters around the zombies is abominable. So while the idea is pretty original, this film still ends up being a run of the mill zombie flick with a visible low budget. Only for bad moviefans I guess.

The Inhabitants - pretty cliche ghost film. A young couple buys a b&b to fulfill their dream of running one on their own. In the first night they hear some noises, but "it's an old house" and everything. Later they find an elderly woman, the previous owner, sitting in their bedroom at night. Spooked, they call the real estate broker who comes to pick her up. While the man is out on a business trip, his wife finds out more about the mysteries of the house. When he returns home, he notices her behaviour has changed. Trying to find out why, he gets more in danger every day. Not many characters in this film, and the ones which are supposed to carry the film do a mediocre job. The scares are ok-ish, atmosphere is nice but nothing really special. The background story is quite cool but I was a bit disappointed by what the ghosts actually do and the ending also fell a bit flat on me. Ok timefiller, but there are better ghostfilms out there.

Beast of the Bering Sea - hilarious monstermovie. In the Bering Sea there is apparently a lot of gold, and the story is about a team of drenchers finding a very rich plot. While exploring it, one of their divers is attacked and killed. Keeping it quiet, they try to buy the plot but they get outbid by their rival. To make the most of the few days they have left before he takes ownership officially, they set out to the plot asap. But what had attacked their diver previously is still swimming around, and these "sea vampires" now attack once more. The acting is so so, but the monsters look pretty cool. The way they attack and are being fought by the drenchers is also funny. I had great fun watching this monster nonsense, I laughed frequently. Recommended for bad moviefans.

2047: Sights of death - a stellar cast as far as B-movies are concerned, but they can't really avoid that this film is pretty forgettable. The Italian director Alessandro Capone succeeded in hiring Rutger Hauer, Michael Madsen, Daryll Hannah, Danny Glover and Stephen Baldwin. Capone does what Italian cinema traditionally does: copying a concept and not quite making a good film out of it. The flair and the visual style which were trademarks of the 70s Italian films are missing here unfortunately. The story is about a police state in the future, he Confederacy, where a resistance group called Green War is fighting the government. This government had tried to incorporate all countries in te world into a new world order, but when a country resisted, they were being fought and in the end they were used as dumps for nuclear waste. Baldwin is an officer who crashlanded in such a contaminated zone, and now his own group as well as an infamous colonel (played by Hauer) are after him. Many things remain vague, like what the plans are once the resistance will gain any power, or to whom the officer is gonna expose evidence of warcrimes of the Confederacy. Acting is run of the mill, some of the cast look like they weren't having any fun on the set. Effects are meager and sound is nothing special. Even if you like the theme of the movie you better pick something else, because this one is just not it.

Long time no horror movies. :?

The Guardian (1990): A family hires a baby sitter that turns out to be some sort of evil druid trying to sacrifice their new born. Directed by William Friedkin! The movie had some nice gore scenes. Production was pretty good, but you could feel the B-movie touch of it. I even submitted some goofs on IMDb for this. Only watch this, if you want to see Jenny Seagrove's tits or there is nothing else to see.

You're Next (2011): A family meets in an abandoned house to celebrate the wedding aniversary of their parents. Just as they would start having dinner animal masked killers start attacking the family. Unbeknownst to them one of the guests has combat skills and fights back. This one's quite a fun and gory movie. I think it was also a bit of a comedy. I would recommend this.
