I am looking for some film recommendations, from all of the guru's here. :) Films from any time frame are fine, colour or black & white, as long as they are availible on DVD (I'm a quality whore).

What I liked;
SAW & SAW II (II moreso, thw twists)
The Skeleton Key (the twists)
Wolf Creek (Enjoyed the atmosphere)
Hellraiser 1 & 2 (2 moreso, atmosphere and the doctor)
Evil Dead 1 & 2 (the cheese gore!)
Braindead (thought it drug on a bit though)
MOH: Fair-Haired Child (thought the story was amazing)
MOH: Incidents On and Off a Mountain Road (atmoshpere)
The Amityville Horror 2005 (visual-wise)
Nightmare on Elm Street (loved Freddy and the visuals)
Seed of Chucky (Hillarious and stylish)

What I didn't like;
Dog Soldiers (although good, not into war-horror.)
The Amityville Horror 70's (good, good, oh... then came the ending)

Considering;
Dead & Breakfast
Boy Eats Girl
Buffy The Vampire Slayer (movie)
A Tale of Two Sisters
Audition

Overall, I like three types of films.
1) Horror & Gore Comedies with over-the-top effects and jokes. Evil Dead 2 is a prime example of what type I like.

2) Gorefests. Extreme gore, not afraid to show you anything. As long as there isn't disgusting rape scenes every 10 minutes and no child nudity.

3) Twisty horror films. The ones where the endings just send you through a realization-ride. Cry_Wolf, The Skeleton Key, SAW & SAW II are all examples of the types of twists I love.

Don't Like...
1) Films with monsters or aliens. Not a fan of the sci-fi aspect of things. Alien, Predator and any form of vs. is just not my thing.

2) Technology against humans! Not my thing either. When machines attack and turn against their creators, or a super-computer turns out to be posessed by a serial killer.

3) Horror films with mixes of politics or war.

Hope you can help :x

I'm sorry but I need to draw conclusion that you like hollywood kind of ready-chewed ("hey you, this IS the killer, can't you see how clever we were") plot twists. Otherwise I'd have to recommend (have you or have you not seen your "considering" list?) A Tale of Two Sisters, which is an amazing movie with excellent plotline. But it's twists and turns are not explained scene-to-scene like the end of Saw I+II for instance.

My other personal favourite is Cannibal Holocaust which is an extreme gorefest, but it also has very heavy in-your-face style social commentary (which might fall into the politics category).

I've always liked Bad Taste more than Jackson's Braindead and that's definitely worth checking out since you like horror-comedy. And Re-Animator, which is one of the most entertaining horror-comedies but has its share of creepy moments too.

Miike's Audition is a masterpiece, but once again a hard movie to absorb if you're accustomed to Hollywood crap. Same goes for all other Takashi Miike's efforts except perhaps One Missed Call.

For Italian natural horror (and gialli), I'd recommend Pupi Avati's House with Laughing Windows. It has a bunch of twists and is very suspenseful. If you like that, the giallo collection is full of movies that are similar to that.

I like twists period, they don't have to be deeply explained, or at all for that matter. I'm fond of analyzing things, thinking them through and doing my own connections. Make it seem like the movie was worth it, amkes me feel smart :( Hehe. I have heard very good things about this movie, and plan to watch it.

I actually tried to watch Cannibal Holocaust and was not a big fan. I couldn't stand it, not for the gore, not for anything other then the rape scene. I can't handle movies with rape scenes such as this and I Spit On Your Grave.

I own Bad Taste, but haven't watche dit for quite a while. The gore seems comediac as it is not as well done as say, Braindead. I was suggested Re-Animator as well, and in a freak coincidence it happens to be coming on SCREAM tonight right after MOH. I'll definately check it out, though Beyond Re-Animator, which I saw a few years back, and kind of ridiculously bad acted. I seriously thought one of them had a voice-over, but perhaps it was just the accent. The dancing penis at the end, well that's just cheese. And, as you should know, I love cheese. Full of calcium.

I'm not accustomed to Hollywood crap, I just haven't watch much non-hollywood crap. I'm young, I'm exposed to it, it's what I grew up with. I've been into foreign films for a while now.

I'll take The House With the Laughing Windows into consideration. :)

Thanks for your suggestions, you've been helpful. ^^

Hehe, yeah I know this site is half sci-fi. To each his own, I don't rant and rave about how bad I think it is, I just don't like those type of movies. Quite a few of them are really well done, such as Alien, just not my thing. :)

How young are you? I'm young too (19) and only really started (from this site) one year ago. Before that i only watched the 'ususal' horror movies (like you it seems).
I'd definately check Audition and A Tale of two Sisters if i were you. Furthermore, look out for Haute Tension, a french slasher with plot-twists, you'll probably like it. Pretty gory too.
Pretty much every Takashi Miike film i've seen is strange and full of things to think of. Try Gozu, Audition, Izo, Ichi the Killer and the rest. Not necessarily horror but they have a creepy atmosphere.
For silly cheese comedy you might try some Troma stuff, there's a collection on this board. Reccomendations would be Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'em High and Tromeo and Juliet.

EDIT: I thought putting the movie names in bold is a good idea.

I'm 16, been here less then a year. I forgot that film as well, High Tension was definately one of my favourites. I also enjoyed House of 1000 Corpses in that wierd kind of way, though I disliked Devil's Rejects.

I loved Ichi the Killer, though haven't seen any other movies or shorts in that series. I know there is an existing prequel, though if I recall it's animated.

I have to recommend Funny Games - a classic movie. If you liked Wolf Creek I reckon you might like Funny Games.

If you want a good mystery/psychological thriller type movie, and don't mind very little action (and I mean very little to none at all). I'd recommend an Aussie movie called The Interview. Nearly the whole movie is set in one building (mostly in one room), but the acting and script are brillant. Especially Hugo Weaving (The Matrix and LOTR trilogies). It won best picture in Australia (among other awards), but is sadly little known.

I guess they're both arguably not horror movies, more thriller, but they're both in the serial killer genre of movies. They're both best if you see them without knowing too much about them too.

Yeah, speaking of serial killers, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a classic too if you've not seen that one.

For the recent Japanese horrors (Ringu to present), I thought Kairo (Pulse) was the best I've seen. Though I also recommend Audition and Tale of Two Sisters.

Not a horror movie, but judging from some of the movies you like, you got to see Oldboy too.

some things in life, you shouldnt let yourself compromise on. that, however, you should reconsider.

having said that, here a few movie titles im throwing out there:

The People Under The Stairs
The Vanishing (1988)
Shutter (Thai)
The Decent (UK)
Cookers
Event Horizon (swallow your anti-scifi pride for this one, its straight up horror)
TFTC Presents; Demon Knight
MOH: Cigarette Burns (the best episode of the series)
TCM original and remake
In The Mouth of Madness
Undead

the bottom line is, if youre going to get into horror enough to come here and spend time making this thread, etc. then you should keep an open mind. no movie is perfect but there is something that can be taken with you from all of them.

Although not horror, I second that. It was an amazing movie.

The People Under The Stairs: LOVED IT. Nostalgia galore when I rewatched it just a month or so ago on SCREAM, I remember it from when I was 5 or so, yeah... my 'young mind' has been soiled for A LONG time. :p

The Descent: This was amazing, and coincidentally, I convinced my mother to watch it with me tonight. Again.

MOH: Cigarette Burns: I thought it was really cool, but not my favourie. By far, that would have been Fair-Haired Child. It had me wanting to see La Fin Absolue Du Monde, though ^^"

TCM Remake: I own this, thought it was rather ok - nothing special. Wasted money, as I blind-bought it. I really want to see the originals, but can't find them anywhere in stores.

Undead: Heard bad things about it, though have had an urge to check it out myself. :)

///

DxaKrator: ^^" it's been soiled, since I was three. Watched Leprechaun with my parents, had nightmares for years, then slowly sunk into horror hell. I watched all the old VHS my uncle had when I was 5, whilst living with my cult-member (Church of God) grandmother. I've seen Murder Set Pieces and didn't find it that disgusting, rather starred at all the eye candy gore and wonder how they did it XD. Uh, what does UEC stand for, anyway?

PS. I agree on the quality thing, I do need to learn to quit it.

The stuff Dxa usually comes up with is... let''s say not your usual horror movie. A whole new world of disgusting-ness will open.

Old boy is a good movie. Also check Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

Really DO NOT ask Dxa what movies he likes! He refrained for a reason... LOL.

I wish I had this site when I was 16... I'd be 50 times as jaded as now! My advice: read a book. Wait till you can legally see films like these, other wise you will spoil the rest of your life. Oh yeah, and wrap it up....

Some of my favorites of recent:

Martin
Possession
Hills have Eyes
Tamara
A boy and His Dog (ok not horror)
the Burning
Suspect Zero
Tenebre
Cyclone
Halloween 3

Wait a few years and some 100's of movies and then watch Cannibal Holocaust again. It would be surprising for me if you can't view this movie from start to end.
As recommendations here are some of mine all time favourites:

- Battle Royale
- Braindead
- Cheech and Chong
- the dentist
- Eraserhead
- Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
- Idle Hands
- Jim Henson : The Cube
- Nosferatu The Vampire
- Requiem For A Dream
- RingU
- Shadow of the vampire
- Sorrority House Massacre Part II (really..i mean part II!!)
- Wildstyle
- Tamara
and so on...

I would recomend to have a look at the VN collection, movies that were once deemed so nasty and vile that no one should see them

check some of those see what all the fuss was about , but use the site search engine to check that there isn't a better rip available as it hasn't been updated in a while.

Roman Polanski's The Ninth Gate if you've not seen it. Cigarette Burns is pretty much a cheaper version of Ninth Gate.

Oh, I agree... I was just going by the MOH episodes he had seen. Every episode after 'Incident..' just pissed me off so much that i boycotted it until i started hearing so many good things about 'Cigarette..' but then i watched the final episodes and now im back where i started.

As for Fair-Haired Child, it was mediocre at best, I would say as good as any given episode of Are you afraid of the Dark (ha)... but it was still much better than the rest of the series, other than CB of course.

As for the rest of this thread, I must say, I am very dissappointed to see Tamara on 2 of these lists. I mean, seriously.

Tamara: A little gem, not quite the kind of movie I like... but good in that afterschool special kind of way, with a little more gore. I expecially loved the scene with the "Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil, See no Evil". Good stuff.

Quote:

XD Didn't HATE it, just not my kind of thing.

Battle Royale: I own both of them, got them as a gift, though haven't seen them yet. Suprisingly, I've always wanted to... but just... never did. Haven't even checked the version or if it has subs.

Eraserhead: Heard good things about this. :)

Requiem For A Dream: Amazing, I own it.

Ringu: A good watch, saw it after The Ring on M. I might grab the HD rip posted ^^

VNs... Gah, I'll have to check some of these out. Spyed Boogeyman, The Burning, The House By The Cemetery, The Last House On The Left, The Toolbox Murders. I heard about these all before, decent things about them as well. Not sure what to think with a list including BOTH Cannibal Holocaust and I Spit On Your Grave, but also Evil Dead.

Ninth Gate: Sounds interesting, I expect great things since Spud is fond of it. :)

Quite a list of things to watch now. I think I'll start out slow and work my way up to the VNs XD

If you haven't seen it grab a copy of AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. IMO it is THE best horror comedy ever made. Really great stuff. In fact I have a theory that it was this movie and evil dead 2, that in some ways ruined horror for a number of years. So many people tried to copy them and couldn't get it right. The "stupid" horror was born. :( Still if you havn't seen it check it out!!

All I can say here is VIDEODROME!!! Check it out. One of my fav movies of all time. In fact try a another of david cronenberg flick. Might not be wat you asked for but still twisted in its own way... not so much of a mind fuck but still very good. CRASH

roflmao!!! Dxa, you know you love it you little freak!

But like a few people in this thread have said this site can offer you a lot in terms of expanding your taste to things you might not have even known they make movies about. There are some really great rare, twisted, funny movies that you simply will NEVER find unless you know some very cool video stores or spend a bit of time reaserching.

man there are so many movies to recommend.. I tink i'll just stop at 2!!
