from Empire magazine

pretty good selection I thought - a couple of horror movies in there.
There's a small write up on each if you click the picture.

http://www.empireonline.co.uk/50greatestindependent/

I was pretty stoked to see what they chose for the #2 position.
#13 or #2 I'd probably have at number 1 for me.

#40 was a big surprise being so new, but it was good I thought - don't know if i'd put it ahead of some of the other movies though.

#48 was another I was surprised but happy to see in there - doesn't seem to get as much recognition as some other indie films.

(Trying not to give away the movie names )

I kind of lost all respect for Empire a few years back.

This is the magazines that has awarded both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith; 5/5.

However, they have some nice top lists, i have the horror, science fiction and action magazine specials.

:o 5/5 - that's a bit of a joke. I thought RotS was the best of the 3 new one's but definitely no 5/5

I've never read an Empire mag, (found the link at a Richard Kelly website), but yeah might not bother after hearing that. Might have to look out for future list specials though. Is the horror list (or any others) available anywhere online by any chance - that would be interesting to see.

One of the best 'list' type things I've seen is a book called '1001 movies you must see before you die' - it is an awesome book. It doesn't have them in a #1001 to #1 list, but just in order of the year they were made. I'll try not to spoil too much, but it has everything from movies like Funny Games, Audition & El Topo to Titanic & Harry Potter and old ones like Vampyr & Un Chien Andalou. Has at least a half page write up, usually more (up to 2 pages) on each movie. Heaps of foreign movies which is good. It may not be great for horror fans (Audition is the most surprising horror entry), but for fans of any type of film it's great - good range of films.

i was planning to type it all out but it ran out of steam:
http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic.php?t=2416

All the movies are listed, as well as some of the details on the titles. None of the filler or side articles though. Respect where respect is due, they've chosen some great movies as far as the classics go. Maybe they just suck at modern film appreciation?

As far as their review standards go, the bottom has really fallen off it. Some of the reviews are just terrible.

Oh and they are the originals in each case, since the publication, a whole bunch of them have been... *sigh* remade.

Thanks Spud, was a good read.
Glad to see 'Carnival of Souls' alongside 'Sixth Sense' there.
And 'Evil Dead 2' without number 1 - usually you see first one in lists with no mention of number 2. Some of my non-horror friends who've seen 'High Fidelity' see the 'Evil Dead 2' scene as a joke. I try to tell em it's not, but they wont believe me :)
