... over HL2 already it seems.

Retail Half Life 2 pirated in Russia

Retail version translated...

By INQUIRER staff: Monday 12 January 2004, 10:23
A READER HAS sent us some photographs of a two-disk Half Life 2 distribution which he says is on the shelves of a Russian trader in Novosibirsk.

The game has been translated into Russian, and according to our reader, this is a copy taken from Valve's web site and "translated and compiled by the chaps out there".

He says that the game itself is quite playable, although there are some plot inconsistencies in places. ?

Sounds like bull, but then again, on some of the foreign pirate markets you can get loads of shit.

man, i thought this was going to be about russian porn.

those poor valve guys, they seem to be getting fucked over alot lately.
considering how much i like the first halflife game, valve just seems to be getting a disproportionate amount of bad luck regarding half-life 2*. i havent played any of the add ons or anything but the original half-life, but it was a game i would pay for, even if offered for free. yep, half-life and extremme movie manager get the Monkeysmasher Seal of Legitimate Obtainment , and those two are about it.

*then my conspiracy theory is that maybe they went overbudget, had serious game errors, have some kind of theft insurance where they get gigamoney if it is stolen beyond recovery, or someone there made a healthy amount for selling it out of thier trunk to the russian/pre-gamers market.

hehe, i wonder if the piracy cops will take the above picture and filter it to see the person who took the picture, and sue them for putting the picture on the internet for everyone to see without paying royalties.
got to sue somebody.

It was re-verse engineered from that source code that leaked last year. Apparantly some guys managed to compile it and release it. I got a hl2 compiled version but I forgot all about it (before i got my new gfx card). Will install it in a bit and have a shot.

Well what can I say, plays very easily on my pc and it's an unoptimised build :o Oh and if this was what they had ready for september last year they've been doing f*ck all :o Although it looks like a preview build, it has a little bat file that says "run demo" but it doesn't work (throws up resource not found and then an openGL error message box (like quakeIII's startup box for those that care) ). I couldn't play single player, i mean the option is there but when I click new then training/easy it just sits there. Have to go start server--> load a level. Just checking in to tell you the graphics are nowt, scalable like anything. Feels like HL too :)

<img src="http://members.lycos.co.uk/horrorhasahome/cool.jpg" width="640" height="514">

Notice all the resource not found everywhere, I guess not all the resources were half-inched when they got the leaked demo.

For those that have watched the E3 demo where they are demonstrating the weight of cans/matresses/and melons in water, that's the veiw from the bottom of the water. The cans, sink, they don't just drop straight to the bottom. Great stuff :)

These play with no problems whatsoever (graphics intensive wise)

What spec is your PC Spud? It doesn't look like the demo movies I've seen, but still not bad.

I don't have the settings anywhere near 1600x1200 they were running it on, plus lots of textures and particle effects are missing. :o On that E3 level with the rotating class, most of the place holders just say "ERROR" in big red letter lol. Notice all the messages everywhere about resources not found. AI is not working either. This demo must have been compiled way before E3. That first picture wasn't on any E3 demos, and you couldn't see that other part because I jumped under water and am looking up :)

But it's running at 1280*1024, ATI Radeon 9800 XT, 2400+ Athlon XP, 1GB DDR PC3200, and doesn't effect it much. You have control over no effects or detailed options :( I guess they aren't implemented in this build at all. To my delight i just found that dune buggy level, only problem is, as i said above, AI doesn't work (I think it's because I have to load via server, rather than single player). The E3 levels are considerably better looking than the others.

<img src="http://members.lycos.co.uk/horrorhasahome/cool3.jpg" width="640" height="514">

There is a terrible bug, where the Freeman gets stuck in a glide and doesn't respond to controls unless you hold it down for a few seconds, then he glides off in that direction. Have to restart HL2.exe if he does that

Na this build is pretty frelled on the advanced features front. Just tried a level and it has captions for everything that happens.

ie. Propaganda is playing on the tv
Security guard stops the people in front, and tells you to go on
Alarm sounds

Here's another bit from E3:
<img src="http://members.lycos.co.uk/horrorhasahome/cool4.jpg" width="640" height="514">

They just stand there doing nothing, no scripting or anything.

I don't know how to take screenshots, i doubt it's implemented, but I am using printscreen which takes both my desktops then i'm cropping em down so it does look better, but still not as good as E3 :(

What is cool however, is the size of the levels seems to have no adverse effects on my system. There's huge objects in the background and the maps are impressively large.

Oh and I forgot to mention i turned AA off, but i normally leave that off from playing Battlefield 1942.

Sounds hopeful for my system, since I'll probably have upgraded my memory by the time of the game's release. Thanks for the captures. 8)

I'll do some more prodding around with it tomorrow, there are about 20-30 "levels" from various parts of the game.

<img src="http://members.lycos.co.uk/horrorhasahome/cool6.jpg" width="640" height="514">

I wonder if this is the same as the Russain pirate edition or if that's something better?

PM system is there if your wanting to be chatty ;) It blatantly has nothing to do with this topic, so please don't post it here, once again, Private Messages are located at the top of the forum.

If it's about that joke up above I don't think it warranted a response, it was blantly a joke. ;)
----

Anyway, no more responses about that. About that 'gliding' bug, it may have been AVG running in the background. Was playing AvP2 today and the same thing happened in the middle of mauling a robot :)

I downloaded this build last year from here:
http://www.bittorrentmovies.de/
and from inspecting it, it is not the build they have been publishing shots from. The areas are more bland, the textures that are there look identical, but a majority are missing. As I can't play the levels in single player, I can't comment on scripting (which was a strong point with HL1)

Doubt the torrent's still alive but worth a look if your interested
