July 30 03: 'The Ring' Sequel Shooting Next Year?
During a recent interview with Moviehole Naomi Watts briefly mentioned The Ring 2 "After her European break, Watts will begin shooting Stay and says that she is committed to The Ring sequel, and not simply for contractual reasons. "I really liked that role, and it seemed to do well so, I'd be thrilled and excited to do it probably next year."

July 31 03: Naomi Watts returns for RING 2
Sci Fi Wire reports that Naomi Watts has agreed to return to star in DreamWorks THE RING 2, the sequel to last year's smash-hit remake of Hideo Nakata's Japanese horror sensation. The actress says that the new film will roll next year. Sci Fi also notes that, according to producer Walter F. Parkes, the follow-up will tell parallel storylines (one set before the events of the first film, one set after), and will not be based on any of the Japanese film series entries.

August 03 03: Release Date Announced for 'Ring' Sequel!
Variety writes that Naomi Watts' Ring 2 has already been given a tentative release date of November 10, 2004 by DreamWorks. Although no other information has been announced yet (whether it's going to be a prequel or sequel) the date is set! We'll keep you posted on any further updates.

November 05 03: Damn Those Freaking Pirates!
I would trade Gore Verbinski's Pirates of the Caribbean, along with the two sequels planned to have him direct a sequel to The Ring, so to me this news is really disappointing. Not only was it announced today that Verbinski won't return to helm The Ring 2, but the replacement is a joke, considering how much money the first Ring pulled in! Read on and get ready to have your hopes that a sequel will be any good smashed into pieces.

Variety reports the aweful news that DreamWorks is moving forward with a sequel to The Ring, tapping commercials director Noam Murro to helm the second installment of the horror hit, which Naomi Watts will once again topline.

Dreamworks is prepping to start lensing The Ring 2 in January, aiming to release the pic November 2004.

Dreamworks will bring back Watts and David Dorfman, as well as screenwriter Ehren Kruger. Sure the following is impressive, but the prestigious Dreamworks brining in a newbie, what gives? "Israeli-born Murro, who is trained in architecture, caught the attention of DreamWorks execs with a darkly toned "Got Milk?" commercial he directed for the California Milk Processor Board that features a boy who can predict unfortunate future events. Spot plays almost like a scene out of "The Ring." He's also directed spots for Nike, Saturn and Volkswagen through his Biscuit Filmworks shingle."

"Murro won three Gold Lions at the 2003 Cannes Intl. Advertising Festival, and this year received a nom from the Directors Guild of America for outstanding direction in commercials."

November 18 03: 'Ring 2' Update, Small Plot Explanation..
Sci-Fi Wire scored some great information from Ring 2 executive producer, Walter Parkes, who explained that the sequel to Dreamworks 130 million dollar smash hit remake The Ring, will begin filming in March of 2004. "We're actively trying to do our first pre-production right now," Parkes said in the interview. Naomi Watts and David Dorfman will reprise their roles as Rachel Keller and her young son, Aidan. As for the plot that we've been dying to know about, Parkes says, "It will come out of the issues raised in our first movie," but will not be based on the sequel to the Japanese horror film Ringu.

December 17 03: Is This Really the Real Deal?
On first glance, the image inside of a "teaser" poster for The Ring 2 looks really ridiculous. It's hokey, and badly put together, so I've been delaying reporting this news until something more official came in. Today, Comingsoon reported that the Streetwise Community was sent the following image for testing reasons. It may or may not become the teaser poster you'll see in theaters. Personally I think it sucks, but hey, as long as the sequel kicks as much ass as the first Ring I dont care. Naomi Watts has signed on once again to play Rachel Keller in the sequel that hits theaters November of 2004.

January 16 04: 'The Ring 2' Begins Filming in March!
According to Sci Fi Wire, "Daveigh Chase, the young actress who played the evil Samara Morgan in The Ring, told SCI FI Wire that she reprises her ghostly character in the sequel. "I will [go back to work] soon," Chase said in an interview. "They're going to start filming in March. Unfortunately, I can't say anything about it, [but] it will definitely be horrifying." Chase added that the producers have not even shown her the script yet. "They're waiting until the last minute [to show me]," she said. "I'm pretty sure I'll get to kill everybody again. That'll be fun." DreamWorks plans to release The Ring 2 on Nov. 10."

January 23 04: 'Ring' Sequel Being Broken Up into Two Films!
There has been a lot of talk on what storyline The Ring 2 would take on, since it's a remake of a Japanese trilogy. According to numerous past sources, it would be a blend of the original stories, and something new - since the Japanese sequels suck (and they do). Well Dark Horizons has some news on how this might change - for the better, "Ehren Krueger, is obviously writing the sequel. The script is part prequel/part sequel with the first thirty five pages being a fleshed out backstory. Right now this is being jettisoned as Dreamworks wants to make that section of the script into a completely independent prequel film (which Ehren will at least write the treatment for, if not the whole film) and thus is busy trying to come up with a beginning for the movie and still be able to make its march start date. While he works on that, Dreamworks is looking for a hire end closer to do a couple steps on the second and third acts"

February 08 04: A Few Pages of the 'Ring 2' Script Reviewed
A scooper who'd like to be known as JPM sent me in what he claims to be some pages out of the first draft script for Dreamworks Ring 2. The script is dated July 19th and from the recent news we've reported, I can easily assume most of these pages will be cut from the sequel to the 2002 smash hit. For the reason why one of the scenes might be cut and a taste of what you might see in the sequel this November, read on... ...Read More

February 12 04: The Opening of 'Ring 2' Revealed?
Once again JPM - who has a friend that works for Dreamworks - sent me some more pages from the first draft of the Ring 2 script, dated July 19th, 2003. I must point out once again that I do not know this person, and cannot confirm that these pages are the real deal. But I'd like to make it known that I didn't receive any backlash emails from the last pages I posted about here, which is a good thing when it comes to rumors and such. So read on for the first five pages of Ring 2, and beware of spoilers. ...Read More

March 09 04: Parting Ways: Director Leaves 'Ring 2'
Over the past year, things seem to have been progressing very nicely for Dreamworks' sequel to the 2002 blockbuster hit, The Ring, a remake of a classic Japanese horror flick. Naomi Watts and co have signed on along with first-time director Noam Murro, which I wasn't to pleased about. Well good news for skeptics like me, Murro is off the project; but could it lead to bad news in the end? Read on for details.

March 11 04: YESS!! The New Director for 'The Ring 2' Is...
...Hideo Nakata!!!! Holy crap, this has got to be the best news I've ever read, no really! Last night the trades reported that first time director Noam Murro parted ways with Dreamworks and left them without a director for The Ring 2, a sequel to the 2002 smash hit. Well today the trades already announced a replacement, Hideo Nakata, the genius who filmed the original 'Ring', entitled Ringu in Japan a few years back. Read on for the full scoop.

What's everyones opinion about these 'The Ring' sequel(s)? Are they just going to suck (sequels often do, like all Japanese Ringu sequels) or are they taking the story into new heights/dimensions? Maybe even come up with new, fresh, actually 'frightening' ideas. Which one is more interesting/you like to see more; sequel or prequel? Good idea to split the sequel story in two movies?

I actually liked US remake more then the original version. Though, I saw Ringu after the Ring, but story, actors, directing - just the overall atmosphere feeled better to me in remake. I'm more interested in sequel than prequel, but hell - two movies insted of one? Yes, please! :D

Good thing that Samara actress is returning for her role. What little screentime she had in first movie, she was really creepy. :wacky: Liked Naomi "Mulholland Drive" Watts whole lot more than those Japanese actresses. I don't say that original Ringu was bad or anything, I liked it too, just that US remake managed to tell the story a lot better/creepier. This is just my opinion. I know that many here love Asian horror cinema, but I haven't got into it at all, even after dozen of their most respected (Ringu's, The Eye, Kairo, Suicide Circle, Dark Water, Battle Royale's etc.) horror flicks...

I'll keep updating this topic when new news come up. :)

I don't know what's going to happen to be honest. The first was a mismangle of the japanese movies, I guess this one will be an 'original' hollywood creation as they've plucked all the novels out of order and out of context.

The first one pissed me off, they managed to spoil all the atmosphere. But as the original (Japanese) sequels suck, perhaps this is a chance for the Americans to create something better...

My initial thought is NO!!! :-o
And when it comes to new, fresh, actually 'frightening' ideas..
Americans? I seriously doubt it..
New director? That sucks..I liked Gore already when he directed musicvideos...
Return of the creepy girl..only good thing so far...
Will it suck? Yes, probably...
Is there a small chance it won't? Yes, a very small one..
Guess we just have to keep our fingers crossed...
