Just wondering if anyone could fill me on which DVD I should go for. Aparantly, the long awaited uk release of the Howling is in october this year... at least according to play.com:
http://play.com/play247.asp?page=title& ... 57&c=&g=72
There's no info on what material is to be included so I did a bit of scouting and found this:
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=10855
Quote: | The BBFC have recently passed several bonus features for new Special Edition releases of The Howling and The Fog, both due at some point from Momentum Pictures. Play.com currently list both with an 18th October 2004 release, which though a long way off would make sense as this is when most horror movies see a release (around Halloween). The features passed are: The Howling SE Welcome to Werewolfland (Documentary, 49mins) Outtakes (12:22mins) Deleted Scenes (10:36mins) Also recently passed are menus for a second disc confirming this will be a two-disc set. Things are looking positive for this release but then not everything has gotten through, as a 4 minute ' Fake Porn Movie' feature was recently rejected (follow the link to discover why, be warned though if you're averse to graphic descriptions). The Fog SE Tales from the Mist - Inside 'The Fog' (Documentary, 27mins) Fear on Film (7:41mins) Outtakes (4mins) Easter Egg (2:38mins) Storyboard (1:24mins) Thanks once again to reader minister_x for bringing this to our attention. |
Now, I know for a fact that this fake porno is on the German edition of the disc according to DVD comparisons, which is not present on any other. The site however says the R1 SE wins: Quote: | OVERALL: R1 - The R1 Special Edition release has a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track and additional extra features. Do note, however, that the R2 Germany is currently the only release to include the fake porn movie. |
So what do you think? Wait for the R2 uk SE or go for the already exisiting R1 or the german edition. I like this movie but it seems to have got royally screwed here in the uk, and I have a gut feeling that the R2 SE will be identical to that of the R1 SE.

yeah, except you get screwed over depending on which country you live in which is something I've always despised in all shapes and forms.
I'm not going to spend my money on an inferior version, so I'm wondering whether i should get the us, uk or german

I have the R1 Special Edition DVD. 'Bought it while ago but I remember that the quality was quite good and there were plenty of bonus : audio commentary, deleted scenes, outtakes, documentary ... Go for it
Of course, if you have a taste for fake porn, just forget about what I said

lol I have no intention of owning that "porno" as a matter of wanting to see it... its just the fact that they've dared to tell me what is suitable for me to watch. Liberal do-gooding bastards
I might just buy the UK one that comes out this october, better compatability and hopefully it will be an equal/better transfer (PAL wins by default by having a larger res and better colour and image quality, living in a PAL region helps too).

Now I'd probably say the MPAA are harsher censors, especially with the turn towards conservatism that's happening. BBFC is becoming much more liberal. That said, this is only hardcore horror we are talking about, BBFC has much clearer guidelines on lots of stuff like use of weapons and fighting in films with younger audiences. Howling is uncut in all regions, its just this fake porno malarkey that's been cut here and in the US. Reading the description it doesn't particularly appeal to me, but still, its principle just as much as having the 'best' DVD Quote: | THE HOWLING - FAKE PORN MOVIE is a bonus feature intended for use on the DVD release of THE HOWLING. It consists of two silent sequences showing women being sexually assaulted. Brief extracts from these sequences, avoiding the most explicit and graphic elements, were employed in the film THE HOWLING during a scene set in a sex shop. In the context of the film the clips served to illustrate the degenerate nature of one of the characters. The sequences (which were specially created for the film) are presented here in their entirety and divorced from their original context. In the first sequence, a woman is assaulted by three men on top of a car bonnet. In the second sequence a woman is tied to a bed, stripped and raped by one of the men and sexually assaulted with a wooden handle. Both sequences exploit sexual violence in a titillatory and pornographic fashion.
The Board?s classification Guidelines clearly set out our serious concerns about the portrayal of sexual violence in films and videos and highlight the unacceptability of portrayals which eroticize sexual assault. The bonus feature was therefore rejected. |
BBFC seem to have rejected it because its completely out of context as a bonus. I'd say that scene hardly sounds appealing though

Yeah,It isn't the fact of just Having to see that little bit..but as you said, I find it appalling to have someone tell me what is appropriate for me to watch and what isn't.Besides..the title by definition says "fake" porn movie...I mean...how bad could it be?The japanesse have been doing that stuff for years with that cruel sadistic porn shit.
I do know that you guys in the UK have been able to see T & A on TV for decades and it's just started to show up here on regualr tv..although it has calmed down some within the last 3 since as you said..the conservatism (i.e. Right wing Republican beurocratic bullshit) has come into play.Although I don't see hollywood making anything less violent when it comes to action films and the like..seems they like to pick on the horror though here.Just for the simple fact that it has a Horror label...Pathetic.

The UK definitely. They can refuse a movie a certificate outright, preventing any legal form of release. Franco's Cellblock 9 is a recent case.
That leaves bootlegs, imports and P2P to fill the gap!

aah but in the uk local councils can totally ignore bbfc classifications and allow unclassified films to be shown in a closed enviroment, or to the contrary where for example sum councils banned Crash i think

And Spiderman, many councils accross the UK ignored the BBFC classification allowing young children to see it at cinema.
Causing the BBFC to introduce the 12A certificate - meaning that THEY deem it unaproriate for under 12's but is at parents discretion.
But the BBFC are still the worst for VHS/DVD releases
