Didn?t know where to post this.
Anyway I just watched it and it blew me away. One of the very very few movies I've seen in my life where the tagline for 'Last House on the Left' rings true: Keep repeating to yourself, it?s only a movie, only a movie only a movie....
Not since 'Requiem for a dream' have I seen anything so depraved of hope and prosperity. Normally I'm able to spot and 'defuse' many cinematic 'tools' and therefore not be affected by them (i.e. see how special effects are made, understand significance of camera angles, notice how the soundtrack affects the perception of the images etc.) But this had me hanging by the neck. I've read a couple of complaints aboot the beginning being slow, but the subtlety of implication was so immensely effective that I forgot I was watching a movie and was genuinely provoked. The first half is so slowly built up that you almost sit and hope for something to happen; only when it finally does, you sincerely regret and want to turn back time.
I wish more film makers would learn by this and stop smearing on everything so thickly as it'll only lead to disbelief and even ludicrousy. Real life aint always so intense nor full of emotions. Don't be confused and think I'm saying that every movie should be slow and boring however my point is simply that if it's realism you're after, don't overdo it!

true a good movie but IMO and a LOT of others this is a better one
Threads.(1984).avi
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090163/
i watched this at school when i was about 13 or so in an English lesson and boy did it scare the shit out of a lot of us :-o
there also was a thread over at SR forums (movie releases)with many other movies with a similar topic but it may be lost in the depths somewhere

I have seen both of these a long time ago, and they did indeed seem to hit a nerve with me, I found them quite engrossing and also very unsettling at the same time.
From a perosnal point of view I actually found Threads to be a better piece, not sure why tho.

Yeah, threads makes Day After look like Disneyland shit, could there be a more depressing movie?I swear there is nothing happy or go lucky at all about threads...pretty damned bleak in my estimation.Saying that though it is one of my favorites in the apoclypse genre.A few more although not as hard hitting as threads are,A Boy and his dog,Failsafe,At dawns early Light, and Hiroshima. There are alot more but those are my personal favorites...Love that doomsday stuff.

do you know of a rip of (by/at )dawns early light i have had no luck as yet only found a bloody columbo episode named the same (which wasn't originally tagged as columbo so i downloaded it )
i put a boy and his dog on the network over at SR a long time ago and i think it's still fully sourced now
and another few i've been looking for for some time to no avail....
when the wind blows
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090315/
a fantastic cartoon doomsday movie about an old couple trying to survive the nukes
testament
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086429/
never seen it but heard it's a good one, more about how a family deals with the issues arrived rather than showing the effects of the actual bombs visually
i also love this kind of stuff Dxa maybe you would like the series i ripped a while ago "Survivors" not about the nukes but more about end of world/civilisation after infection from a virus
the thread is in the non horror releases if you are interested

Yeah i am,didn't even know about it (Probably thought it was survivor and never looked in)But That sounds cool to me
As far as By dawns early light I got a vhs of it but no dvd yet..I can look around and see if I can find one somewhere though since I am dumping my vhs's slowly but surely.I do Have failsafe I ripped a long time ago, also got countdown to looking glass and I have Hiroshima coming on dvd.Not heard of when the wind blows..missed that somewhere but the plot sounds cool..I got another cartoon doomsday one called Barefoot gen.I have seen Testament..it was alright but not as hard hitting as the others...you don't see much going on,you just see people slowly dying off from radiation sickness.
Barefoot Gen

Countdown to Looking glass
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087090/
Fail-Safe
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058083/
By Dawns Early Light
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099197/
Hiroshima:out of the Ashes
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099772/
Would like to see this one sometime:
The War Game (1965)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059894/
Brittish tv movie that was deemed to violent for television.

Does anyone remember the 'Protect and Survive' British public information films? Action After Warnings (1976) and Casualties (1975)
How to build a fall-out shelter by taking doors off and resting them against a wall. If you hear the warning signal and can't find cover lie in a ditch and cover your hands and face. If you are at home and hear the warning remember to close the curtains that will protect you from the atomic blast. Quickly make a cup o' tea it could be your last.
I don't think the Casualties info. film was shown on British television.
