Yeah it is TOO cool, really well done.

Frightfest was pretty good, some good movies, but this one was the best (Oldboy and Haute Tension were good too but they're old news round here.)

They played Hellboy too and had all the stars down for it, but that movie is pretty weak IMO.

Leeds next, please Bruce, please...!

been on my look-out-for list for the last 2 months
the machinist will rock no doubt

...along with a couple of other scifi/horror/fantasy gems.....
Casshern
Hellraiser-Deader
D-War
Seed of Chucky
Saw
Chronicles of Riddick

... and the probably crappy but still very much anticipated AVP and blade trinity, not to forget recent horror blessings like dead and breakfast, suburbian nightmare, haute tension, DOTD, bubba ho tep.... i would say its a bloody great year to get spooked & shocked :-o :beerchug:
errr, sometimes only shocked... without the spook :?

bump, sorry I want to make it clear... it did look cool to be fair, but its absolutely f*cking terrible. What a waste of an actor.

Any reflections on how badly most of them sucked?

man youre such a twat. how could u
wearing your torturer-costume today ???

casshern 2/10 (direction was a TOTAL failure- pure incompetence for every1 on display)
deader 1.5/10 (my poor poor beloved cenobites, only thing they bite these days is dust)
D-War STILL MUCH ANTICIPATED (i expect CHEESE GALORE :D )
seed of chucky (gosh, i was twice as fucked up as usual when we watched it) 5.5/10
saw 6.5/10 (paid no justice to the hype)
riddick 7/10 (decent for what it was)
blade trinity 4/10 (wanna rewatch blade II soon, rewatched the original recently, now i actually find it just about as lame as trinity)
avp 2.5/10 (as if i was the only one that had put some hopes in that ultimate clash of the space creature titans)
ultimately it was utter crap.
the machinist NO SCORE, fell asleep while watching it, but it wasnt really the movie?s fault. yet im not to keen on giving it another shot anytime soon.

i didnt mention it in that old post, but u forgot "man-thing" 2/10 (fluorescent green/black owning the screen for 90 mins, now thats a rarity :P )

:o makes me wonder why im still grabbing lots of horror/scifi/thrillers

best 'recent' horror imo: DOTD remake, dead & breakfast, shallow ground, tremors 4 (fanboy here, but its a genre corssover gem, so not sure if it even qualifies to participate here)

nothing spectacular in terms of horror from my home turf, the asian cinema within the last 12 months either :( )

any new "potentially highly anticipated" movies on the spooky horizon ?
i figured it might be best NOT to scan the web for horror projects in the making anymore :wacky: ;)

latest horror flick i added to my queue:
serpent and the rainbow. imo, one of cravens best. a flick i simply adored back in the days.
i thought its finally time to upgrade from my old vhs. year of making: 1988 !!

I agree that the film was great - easily the best role I've seen Bale in so far. BTW it's Christian Bale - you're probably thinking of his Patrick Bateman character from Amercian Psycho (I used to call him Patrick all the time when A.P. first came out). :)

In my opinion, The Machinist was an average film. If it had come before Fight Club (and a few others too), then perhaps it would have been amazing, a true gem. Now it's just an average film. Too bad Bale's performance was in vain.

Really? imo It was really very, very subpar; really poor storyline and clumsy implementation, Christian Bale should have really read the script before commiting to this role so much, and rest assured beyond his performance and the look of a few scenes, its not worth bothering with.

Same kind of trash as Secret Garden, totally lame duck.

the trailers didn't, I'm a fan of darker cinema and the shots are very technical and very 'fincher'. The movie wasn't but i can't help that though unfortunately... could have switched it off though i guess

The Machinist was okay. Not better than okay, but okay, at least. Probably a 7, up a mark for his performance alone. One of a similar genre that I did like recently is The Jacket with Adrien Brody. Really good. 8+ from me.

Geezus, talk about lame duck...
Fincher is one of the most technically sound directors in the history of cinema. Its like saying pink floyd, jim hendrix and led zeppellin never contributed anything to music to say anything otherwise... ie totally retarded.

On another note, i believe he's gone back to music videos which is deeply saddening... sure panic room was lame, but its amazing he made anything out of such a shit script (sit down and read that thing, boy is it lame).

Probably a 7,

Thats the weirdest way of spelling 4 i've ever seen lol: laaaammeee  Secret window a 2, Fight Club a 9... nearly 10.

For me Machinist was rather... average, a bit above average at best, but only because of Bale's commitment to it and his performance... It might have had a promising beginning, but then quickly dissolved into nothing more than a bundle of "things you have already seen in other movies". It reminded me mostly of Memento and Cronenberg's Spider, though... So overall, I'd give it about 6/10. Fight Club, on the other hand, would get an 8. Or maybe an 8.5. 8)

heh Fight Club was the first dvd i owned iirc, its also one of the best made discs to date (also why it got the rap it did, never heard much about it at cinema but its a really big cult movie now)

I enjoyed Memento, regardless which came first, the machinist just died very early on, its a perfect example of a film that doesn't trust the intelligence of its audience imo.

I've still not seem Cronenberg, but as you can probably tell by my druken ramblings, I rate Fincher as one of the better directors out there (even if Panic room is seriously shit... looks good though i guess).

I really go for stylish and gothic visuals, its one of the reasons i like tim Burton's movies, and why from the trailer i thought this was going to be more than a 4/10 effort.

I can agree with everyone about the level of potentional, but not about its delivery and substance.

For me, Fight Club was, the first movie that I've been searching for a decent rip - back in the old days of various-sized DX3LM rips  The first DVD I bought was, I think From Dusk Till Dawn (and of rather poor quality), still treasured of course

Now, Spider I'd say is definately worth viewing, though I'd say it's not only best to watch the entire movie at once (no piss-breaks or going to get a beer  ), but I think also a special mindset might be needed... I've heard a lot of very mixed views on that movie, ranging from "abysmall" to "pure genius", so you might or might not like it, but IMHO most of the people who didn't like it just didn't pay enough attention to watching it... It is best I'd say to devote a quiet evening to watching it without being disturbed by anything else and don't do that in a hurry... Then you'll get a full impression of it... The emptiness of the so-well-known streets and simple, regular things in life, that you normally don't pay much attention to, but now seeing from a perspective of... well... from a different perspective... and it is that perspective that gives you that depressing, suffocating feeling combined with something of a nugging hunch that something just isn't right, but you just can't pinpoint what it is, as it keeps slipping to just the outside of your consciousness. It's depressing as hell and kind of scary, but it just won't go away or come to you....

What's best in it isn't even in the story (which also doesn't really do much original) or its ending. Nor even in the characters, though Fiennes and Richardson do a really great job. It's just in how the story is told.

btw Tim Burton does it for me too, many of his movies are on my "favourites" list... Sleepy Hollow, Beetle Juice (I admit, even Batman). As for Fincher though, Alien3 I'd say was quite OK and Se7en (correct spelling?) was OK too, only Panic Room definately sucked, there's no denying and no defense of 12 equal pears could rule otherwise...
