Anyone else like to read this guy's stuff?
So far I've read 'Only Foreward', 'Spares' and am almost done with the short story collection 'What you make it'.
I've also got the rest of his books, which I'll jump into later.
Now, 'Only Foreward' is one of my alltime favorite books, so full of genuinity, in a perfect mix of creativity, humor and action that I was amazed when I read it.
* Small Spoiler Warning * The first part was incredibly funny and I laughed out loud several times, but gradually it turned more into an action/mystery genre. I thought it would be a kind of traditional film noir story, but then the last part of the book came and really amazed me with it's very deep psychologic insights. * END OF Small Spoiler Warning *
I'm even planning to read it again, some time, something I very rarely do with books.
'Spares' was much darker and not that well written, but still highly entertaining.
The short story collection is also very interesting. He says in the foreword that it contains the first story he ever wrote, as well as the most recent, and many between. That means some of them are in a much lesser standard in linguistics, but still he almost always have an extremley intriguing tale to tell. Some are cleverly disguised as boring and uneventfull right up towards the end, when he delivers the gut punch which sometimes have made me kind of sick and perhaps even affraid? He has a few interest, mainly computers, cats, the internet, sci-fi, and women, and these subjects are always re-ocurring, which might make it seam somewhat repetitious, but on the other hand alot of those interest are shared by me, so I can really relate to much of what he writes.
His style is very simple and straight foreward, with little or no fancy words or sentences (which Barker is so fond of for example) but what really makes him great is his abillity to pin point feelings and thoughts which I always recognize as my own, and simply explain why we are the way we are, and do what we do.

hmm... On one of his books it says in the 'About the Authour' section, that the movie deals were sold for both Only Foreward & Spares, in 6 digit sums. And that was back in '97 or something....? Wonder what happened? Why the heck are they keeping these incredible stories on ice, yet continuing producing sequels to films that were originally pure shite...?
I'm starting to think more and more that the main problem with Hollywood aint that there's no more creativity and talent, but that they are simply to damn afraid to make something new, when they allready have proven success manuals about how to make a movie.

Michael's second novel SPARES is under option again. Originally optioned for several years by Stephen Spielberg's DreamWorks SKG, the cloning novel has now been picked up by Paramount and a writer is currently being recruited.
Six of Michael's short stories are under option with British television company Little Bird. The stories have been adapted by Julian Simpson (director of THE CRIMINAL) and the company is currently talking to networks.

So I just finished reading 'The Lonley Dead' and was very dissapointed. The story was really messy, and didn't really come together. Many plotholes. Not so good written.... Unsatisfying end..
A bad book. =(
Got 'One of Us' & 'The Straw Men' left till I've read 'em all. Sure hope they are better.
