OK...Tell me if you agree with me on this.
Open Water was supposed to be the big new Horror Movie, right?
Everyone was talking about it, everyone was saying it was supposed to do for the open water what Jaws did for the beach.

And then I went to see it, and I don't know if it's just from watching too many horror movies or what, but I thought it was boring. And I didn't care if the couple died or not. I almost hoped they would hurry up and die so I could leave.

I thought the American Remake of Ringu (Called The Ring...how ironic  ) was WAY scarier. WAY scarier.

Am I a tasteless idiot, or am I right?

I really don't think you're an idiot, but....

Here's my example of how it's gonna vary from person to person:

I watched it weeks ago and thought it was ok, and really didn't expect it to end like it did... which I liked. And then that was that.

Wife watched it last night and it scared the shit out of her....
The tention, the water, the sharks, oooooh my.

I'll give it a thumbs up just for the ending.

Scarier than Open Water (in which case I would agree), or Scarier than Ringu?? (in which case I vehemently disagree)

Scarier than Open Water.
Comparing Ringu to The Ring isn't fair. That's like Apples and Oranges.

Yeah, that's true. You know, I just typed out the ending and then deleted it because I don't want to spoil it for others.

Let's just say ending it the way they did is not something you normally see in Horror Movies. Any movies, really. Definitely an ORIGINAL movie.

I don't know. Maybe I should rent the DVD and watch it again.

If you think the ending of the film is bad, you should read what really happened to the couple : http://www.cdnn.info/article/open_water/open_water.html

Especially when you see just how long a period of time elapsed before it was noticed that the couple were missing.

Who saw that crappy movie with Stacey Keach about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, where many of the sailors were left in the water and attacked by sharks.

Well it was based on this book http://www.ussindianapolisinharmsway.com/home.htm

And if anyone wants a shocking insight into what went on before, during and the trial afterwards, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, chief. It was comin' back, from the island of Tinian Delady, just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. Thirteen footer. You know, you know that when you're in the water, chief? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. Well, we didn't know. `Cause our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. Huh huh. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, chief. The sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know it's... kinda like `ol squares in battle like a, you see on a calendar, like the battle of Waterloo. And the idea was, the shark would go for nearest man and then he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces.
Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player, bosom's mate. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. Well... he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us. He'd a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper, anyway he saw us and come in low. And three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks ttook the rest, June the 29, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Eventually got round to seeing this.

I really enjoyed it.
Thought it was very well made, and quite tense.

The ending though :o

I was expecting the hollywood ending where Bruce Willis would save the day and they would go on and get maried / have kids.
But that final shot of her going under the water, had me gobsmacked.
As I really didn't know how the film ended - what a downer

I loved the movie. I wouldn't call it a horror though, I'd say it's a thriller. I thought it was great , and not at all overrated. You are an idiot, but I will forgive you, because you joined on my birthday 8)

Open Water was boring bollocks, one of themost shittiest movies I have watched in a long while.

The ending was cool tho, I always like it when they struggle to survive, but cuff it anyways.

Watched this movie earlier this week - was OK and the premise of being abandoned in water like that was enough to make me say "oh fuck" a few too many times. But the ending was, as others have mentioned, quite unexpected despite being totally untrue as per the reality the story was based.

Infact I thought the real story was worse .........
