Not really horror but it fits into this forum.
I just saw this french movie, after Carne, a short which serves as an introduction to this film's characters and story. Thought it was pretty well done, a peek in the mind of a(nother ;) ) deranged man. It's about a butcher who, because he beat up a guy who he believes molested his mute daughter, goes to jail and loses everything he has. After he gets out, he tries to start his life over but he fails. Most of the movie consists of the main characters thoughts which are quite nihilistic and hateful.
I was told beforehand this would be very disturbing and hard-to-watch but it didn't shock me very much. Only the ending really made me hate the main character. This could be because i really reject violence/rape against children. Let alone incest with your own daughter.
Any thoughts on this movie? I'd highly recommend it if you haven't seen this yet.

great movie!! far better than rather exploitative "Irreversible". very nihilistic, deprresive, real kick in the face. Gaspar Noe said he wanted to make anit-French film. I think he succeded. when one watches "I Stand Alone" everything in depicted world seems so hostile. World is really not a nice place to live in. characters are wicked, evil, selfish, egoistic, but yet I think Noe does tell something about human nature. And it's good psychological portrait of an exluded from society man. This exlusion brings anger and hate, and wish to take revenge on "them all".

But there is one bright point in Butcher's life - his care and love for mute daughter. so maybe Noe shows that there is something to care about and to live for... but i was quite puzzled by the ending. at first my reaction was similar to D.'s. But then some say that last scene and Butchers monologue gives hope - to live against strict rules of society, to care about those who are really important, and to hell with others. Dunno if this is correct, but may be viewed this way.

YOu need to get your hands on Carne which is Gaspar Noe's first film. It's the prequel to I Stand Alone and is a short that was released to festivals. It goes over how the Butcher ends up where he starts off in ISA. Great series Gaspar is the man. He also has a video he did for Placebo and a PSA commercial for safe sex where a minatour fucks a girl in the ass while a bunch of bikers chant on...crazy ass editing....

But if you really like Gaspar check out Gerald Kargl's "ANGST". This film influenced Gaspar so much and that were he takes almost all his cimetography from. This movie is ridiculous. here are the specs and i'll post a link.

Angst (1983)
Directed by
Gerald Kargl

Writing credits
Gerald Kargl
Zbigniew Rybczynski

Genre: Crime / Horror (more)

Plot Summary:A man is released from prison after serving four years for murdering an elderly woman. He quickly begins to feel the compulsion to kill again. After failing to murder a cab driver, he flees and discovers a secluded rural home, where a young woman lives with her sick mother and retarded brother. He then begins to take out his sadistic pleasures on them, attempting to hold them hostage, while thinking of his troubled childhood with his abusive mother and grandmother...

Carne is not a prequel, since it was made before SCT, but anyway good introduction to Noe's masterpiece.

How is that not a prequel? It takes place before ISA which makes it a prequel. You don't have to make the movie afterwards ala Star Wars to be a prequel. ISA is a sequel to Carne which make Carne a prequel. Don't be hollywood.

A prequel is only a prequel when it's released after, like a sequel, hence the word prequel. A pre-sequel.
Carne would just be a part 1 for me.

says who? Hollywood?! come on! you only say that cause SW inked that shit with episode I but the word existed well before. Any film that is before the sequel can be called a prequel for organizational purposes. Pre-sequel is an easy way of saying the movie that came out 1st or where the story began...

I do not say that because star wars had prequels... It's easy, just look at the word itself... Why isn't part one of any series called a prequel (maybe by you, i mean in general)?

You know what, let's just not give a shit.

to put it another way - is, let's say, Hellraiser I a prequel to Hellbound?

I agree with D. it has nothing with SW, Hollywood or whatever. and about not giving a shit too
