Some great flicks.. a BIG thanks to tirapalla for releaseing them. I had no idea these were out on DVD. I've been looking for a copy of "Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom (1973)" for years... used to be real rare but no longer!! GO THE rerelease on dvd of all the old cool stuff!!!

This was the final entry in the Zubeko Bancho series, with sexy-and-sweet Reiko Oshida heading up a cast of gangster-girl wannabes in a go-go dancing maelstrom of Japanese music, fashion and kitsch. Truly a film that defies description, but imagine a Jack Hill production of Hair with an unsupervised Riot Girl cast, and you're starting to get the picture. The result is a delicious example of Japanese pop culture in high transition from the groovy '60s to the dangerous '70s.

About Sukeban
Sukeban is a contraction of the Japanese words "Suke" (female) and "bancho" (boss). The term describes a specific high school archetype which is usually (though not always) associated with juvenile delinquency. The term "Zubeko" (bad girl) is no longer in vogue, but at the time these films were made was a hip slang expression that would more accurately have been translated as "bitch".
The current Kogal (also Kogaru) style of retro-hip soul-sister fashion can first be seen in these films -released two decades before the advent of Kogal culture. In fact these films were among the first to show high school girls (albeit delinquents) in street styles rather than exclusively in the uniforms with which they are so closely identified. This change-of-styles was likely a political statement on the part of the filmmakers (equating the loss of that uniform with the loss of sexual innocence) and it heralded the arrival of Japanese feminism.

The Sukeban films, though released as exploitation, contain strong social commentary. They collectively told a single cautionary tale, and presented for contemporary Japan the same dystopian world that A Clockwork Orange predicted for future England.

She and a small band of students attempt to take down the vice-principal and his committee with the help of an embittered journalist. Ike has a sort of extended cameo as a gang leader who literally rides into the school on a motorcycle looking to settle a score with Sugimoto. Her participation in the drama is, sadly, minimal this time out. Of the four this is the film that most resembles a conventional women-in-prison movie, though there?s not much that?s conventional about it. There?s an extremely erotic lesbian sex scene (in a toilet stall), rape (school girls on man), torture fun with urination and sadistic violence. Sugimoto gives a great performance here, but the cherubic Ike is underused ? to the films detriment.

Miko Sugimoto is the leader of the Red Helmet Gang, a biker girl gang from Shinjuku who wind up in Kyoto and make a bid to take over the local girl gangs there. Successful for a short time in ruling the streets it isn't long before Miko and her crew run afoul of the local Yakuza, and are forced to turn to Reiko Ike, a ronin Yakuza girl, and sister to one of the top Yakuza in Kyoto, for help, leading to a murderous showdown at a small coastal resort. The third film in the Girl Boss series, Girl Boss Guerilla is also courtesy of madman Norifumi Suzuki, and features feisty Miki Sugimoto as the leader of a girl biker gang who falls for an anti-social boxer. Her crew runs afoul of a mob of yakuza cutthroats shepherded, once again by one of Toei’s favorite bad guys, actor Toru Abe -- something that spurs Sugimoto to re-align herself and reconcile with her former rival, Reiko Ike. This maintains the status quo for a short time, and the middle third of the saga finds the girls setting their sights on seducing, then blackmailing various Buddhist monks and Catholic priests. A situation ripe for director Suzuki who reveled in such profane-humor digressions. It’s too bad that these alternately funny and inane stretches slow down the story.

Thankfully, at last, Sugimoto and her gals head down the highway to coastal Katsuragawa where her pugilist lover is working out with his trainer (yakuza movie veteran, Michitaro Mizushima). Before they arrive, Abe and his goons materialize to put the heat on the two men. Violence erupts, and it’s only after fists have been flying for a time that Sugimoto, Ike and their wild bunch stampede in like the cavalry to save the outnumbered duo. Before the battle is over, Abe’s minions pin Sugimoto down in ‘Perils-of-Pauline’ fashion, attempting to slice off her arm with a buzzsaw. Her chivalrous beau wades in, rescues her, but gets stabbed to death for his trouble. This spurs the gangsters’ retreat. Sugimoto and her comrades then withdraw to the sunset-dappled beach to hold a wake for the fallen hero while the boxer’s hippie minstrel pal strums a plaintive song of farewell in the background. Now it’s payback time, Sugimoto trying to sneak into Abe’s gang HQ through a heating duct. Predictably, she’s caught, beaten, tortured and is about to be subjected to an update of the ‘Perils’ style-situation – with a cigarette lighter held between her legs -- when Ike brazens in with a rifle. She rescues Sugimoto and holds the mobsters at bay while her thrashed partner makes a run for it. This time Ike gets captured and is subsequently raped by boss Abe. Afterwards, Abe’s number two henchman, who carries a torch for Ike, secretly frees her, and she escapes. Sugimoto and Ike then manage to trick the pursuing Abe into stealing their bomb-rigged car, and he’s blown to smithereens.

Criminal Women - Killing Melody is one of the finest of sukeban and female yakuza one-offs, helmed by novice director Atsushi Mibori, who was also behind the camera the same year on the audacious, manga-derived Cruel High School - Bad Boy (Hijo Gakuen - Waru, 1973-1974) trilogy starring Hayato Tani and Mari Atsumi. Casting Reiko Ike and Miki Sugimoto as slightly older protagonists, the film mixes elements from both the Female Convict Scorpion and Girl Boss series as well as other contemporary Toei yakuza pictures. Ike makes various attempts at violent payback on a yakuza boss (Ryoji Hayama) and his men, the hoodlums responsible for her gang rape and her father’s ruin and death. Her first knife attack on them in a nightclub lands her in prison. She’s soon befriended by Chiyoko Kazama, Yumiko Katayama and others, but becomes rivals with inmate Miki Sugimoto, who happens to be Hayama’s mistress. There are wild flashbacks showing how some of the girls ended up behind bars. One of the most amusing shows Kazama, a girl who went on a drunken motorcycle rampage and injured a pursuing cop when her tossed-beer bottle conked him on the head. Ike and the girls get released mid-film, and her new playmates opt to aid her in her vendetta. Soon they’re fomenting a Machivellian gang war between debauched hood, Takeo Chii’s bunch and Hayama’s mob. Inevitably, Sugimoto, though once more securely ensconced as the only woman in Hayama’s stronghold, decides to offer help in sabotaging the gang from the inside. The climax sees every yakuza exterminated. When the dust settles, all the girls have miraculously survived. But Ike and Sugimoto immediately feel the need to rekindle hostilities, first with knives, then with their fists on the corpse-strewn battlefield. Muddy, bloody and their energy at last spent, the two shakily rise up as true comrades. Director Mibori acquits himself well with exhilirating action, intoxicating visuals and a sense of humor that is more often than not effective (compared to the broad slapstick in various other ‘pinky violence’ pictures).

The second episodein the Terrifying Girls High School series, Lynch Law Classroom, is the best, a lunatic erotic/grotesque sleaze fest that remains one of director Norifumi Suzuki’s wildest movies. Miki Sugimoto is the leader of a trio of underdog delinquents at a superstrict girls’ school. Independent yakuza biker chick and all-round free spirit, Reiko Ike arrives midway to assist Sugimoto and her pals in fighting a homicidally fascist band of schoolgirls whom the principal (Kenji Imai) has recruited to keep the rowdier misfits cowed. These neo-nazi types are merciless sadists who love to drain their victims’ blood, burn them with hot lightbulbs and generally make their lives miserable enough that they’ll commit suicide. Ike, in turn, is helped by her yakuza pal, the suave but somewhat klutzy Tsunehiko Watase. Watase engineers blackmail scenarios by setting up sex stings on various hypocritical school staff and a corrupt member of the Diet (Nobuo Kaneko), a bunch unable to put the brakes on their voracious appetite for underage poontang. The climax sees a full-scale riot at the school, with the girls keeping the hordes of cops at bay with rocks and firehoses. Supremely anarchic entertainment. Pinky-Violence.com

The fourth and last Delinquent Girl Boss movie, Worthless To Confess is without question the best of the series. From the opening moments where an auditorium full of reform school girls riot when the principal pulls the plug on a Ken Takakura-starring Abashiri Prison movie, the series, at last, strikes the perfect balance of action, humor, pop artifacts, music & fashion, and well-engineered melodrama. Reiko Oshida is released from reform school and goes to visit the widower father of her nemesis, Yuko Katayama. The widower (Junzaburo Ban) owns his own car repair garage, and soon Oshida, yearning for a decent parental figure, is apprenticing as his grease monkey/girl friday. However, things start to go wrong when boss, Nobuo Kaneko (from Battles Without Honor & Humanity) bids his gang shake down Ban. Oshida takes it on herself to negotiate, but is harassed at the gangster HQ. Chip-on-her-shoulder Katayama, the sweetheart of boss Kaneko’s spineless, mod right-hand man, intervenes with the thugs who are trying to humiliate her former nemesis. Unhappily, the girls are no match for the craven hoods, and papa Ban comes to their rescue, terrorizing the ruffians with a straight razor. Weaselly Kaneko offers the tubercular, impoverished gambler husband (Ichiro Nakatani) of Oshida’s friend (Yukie Kagawa) an outrageous amount of money to snuff Ban. Principled Nakatani initially hesitates but agrees when he realizes he’ll soon leave Kagawa a penniless widow. When Nakatani becomes too ill at the last minute, Kaneko’s mobsters in a waiting car run down both Nakatani and Ban. Back at the garage, Oshida, Katayama, Kagawa and the other girls break out their crimson dusters and swords, and bid elegaic farewell to papa Ban’s lying-in-state corpse. The swordfighting carnage that follows at Kaneko’s nightclub, the only major action setpiece of the film, is the finest in the series and only suffers from the girls killing five times as many hoods as we know to be in Kaneko’s gang. But, considering the over-the-top tall tale vibe dominating throughout the movie, such quibbling is beside the point. Nakatani’s former friend (Tsunehiko Watase) who has a crush on Oshida, joins the fray towards the end, at which point the death-dealing reaches a kind of orgiastic, pop art crescendo. Yakuza boss Kaneko is gorily run through by Oshida, and it’s filmed from beneath a glass floor ala director Seijun Suzuki. With the gangsters decimated and police sirens in-the-distance, we realize the coughing, widowed Yukie Kagawa has caught the TB from dead husband Nakatani. Her loyal friends hide her, and she weeps with futility as she witnesses Oshida and her comrades hauled off to jail. Judging from the three previous films in the series, who would have guessed Worthless To Confess would turn out to be such a tour-de-force.
