Extra Info · Why is the Pixel Aspect different in the mp4 and the .mkv container? .·. (Digital) PAL 4:3 video has 720 sampled pixels per line, in this, .·. there are 18 pixels overscan. So only 702 of these pixels deliver the .·. visible image on the TV-screen. These 702 pixels should be displayed .·. as 768 square pixels on your screen (SAR128:117). .·. This folows the ITU-R BT.601 standard for digital video. .·. Now mpeg4, for optimal performance, should have it's resolution .·. dividable by 16. That is why 704 instead of 702 pixels are sampled. .·. To make the result compatible with existing hardware standards, the .·. .mkv container overrides the correct PAR to display the 704 pixels .·. as 768 square pixels, instead of 770. .·. This gives us an invisable aspect ratio error a bit smaller than .·. 0.3%. The mp4 inside the mp4 container although, gives the correct .·. AR, when extracted. .·. .·. Note that not all players handle this correct! .·. VLC media player does it right at all times!
