JJ (George Segal) is an ex-hairdresser turned heroin addict who meets his soul-mate in the form of the free-spirited Parm (Karen Black). Desperate to escape his life of doing favours for local dealer Vivian (Hector Elizondo) in return for fix-ups, he turns to robbing Vivian's clients with the help of his junkie pal Billy Dynamite (Jay Fletcher) in order to raise money to escape the city. The city has a grip that he cannot escape however, and he finds himself trapped between Parm, Vivian and the two detectives (Robert De Niro & Ed Madsen) who are blackmailing him into turning informer.
