A confused young man (Brendan Fraser) stumbles into a forest clearing inhabited by a woodcutter (Viggo Mortensen) and his beautiful wife (Ashley Judd). We discover that he has fled from a strict religious commune which has been ransacked by local rednecks who have killed his parents. The wife, Callie, takes him in and a mutual attraction grows between them. Although a Christian at heart (though not in practice), Callie represents everything that is sinful to the young man and his confusion leads to tragedy.
Utilising heightened lighting and surreal camera angles, Ridley conjures up an eerie mood laced through with sexual foreboding. Add to this a thumping score and the essence of Little Red Riding Hood and you have a fairy-tale for the nineties.
A
masterpiece of visual exuberance, Philip Ridley has gathered a handful of
naturally stunning locations and squeezed out an atmosphere laden with overtones. The forest itself is almost an extra character, paralleling the tone of events with a transformation from sun-dappled boughs to shadow-casting skeletal fingers
Not really a horrorflick but it certainly has some disturbing moments
Enjoy!
