"Long ago when the Earth first born, on a happy land Mago, Han-Woong, an Adam, mated with the Mother of Earth, Mago, the woman transformed from the 12 spirits, and Men were born. A day came when someone ate the forbidden fruit filled Men with greed and being controlled under desires, Mago then gradually turned from a paradise into a desert. Not only everyone was leaving, the greed of Men had also hurt the innocent spirits and revenge was taken. Years later, the Han-Woong who had gone through metempsychosis realized from astrology and dreams that Mago was his own mother, and all the sufferings are originated from him..." -- HK DVD box.
The director Jang Kyung-Ki is the creator of the ? multipoem ?, a new genre using images, poetry and music. As a lot of self proclaimed poets, Jang is a bit pretentious and out of step with the world...some sequences look over-dramatized or simply ridiculous. But Mago also produces fascinating and shocking images, and the fast paced MTVesque editing is quite catchy, making sometimes think of Tsukamoto (the subway scene) or Nam Ki-Woong. For western influences, see Jodorowski, Pink Floyd, Borowczyk or Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi)...
With this first movie, Jang manages to create a visually rich & coherent world, eventually using stockshots to describe the side effects of consumerism and the brutality of our so-called civilized societies. Some scenes are pretty tough, such as the one in which a spirit discovers a slaughter-house and witnesses pigs, deers & dogs killings. However, animals have been killed for the movie purposes, like the thousands of insects and frogs of the opening sequence or the deer loosing his blood while staring at the camera (try to laugh at that one!). As I said, some sequences are over-dramatized (a spirit drowns in polluted water among dead birds & fishes) but are a fair counterpart to the damage the movie tries to denounce.
Although Mago is deeply rooted in korean culture and traditions, it's interesting to notice how it relates to biblical mythology (lost paradise, forbidden fruit...), making its message almost universal. This may sound like a right-thinking and easy message to deliver, but you'll need some talent nowadays to expose it in an efficient and disturbing way.
If you don't agree, you still can watch the 12 young naked women playing the spirits of Eden (825 naked actors in the making !!!)
