The inclusion of big-name Hollywood stars does not change the fact that this is one of the sleaziest movies of the 1960s. Absolute grindhouse dirge on every level, except for the performances which range from excellent to wonderfully hammy. I can only imgine how audiences must have reacted to this at the time it was released...grimy exploitation with sex, violence and gore starring two of Old Hollywood's most cherished female stars! DeHavilland is her usual prissy sacrificial lamb character in this(at least til the end), and Anne Sothern is great as a drunk old whore with a soft heart. Sothern would go on to other sleazebag B films like "The Killing Kind". James Caan is positively awesome in his debut, an over-the-top psycho-criminal role, channeling Brando throughout. One of the genuine oddities of mainstream cinema, a late-night classic that really delivers the goods!
