<table width="600"><tr><td>Potential festival hit. Gruesomely funny Idols parody with mentally handicapped candidates. What d'you mean, not politically correct? By Christoph Schlingensief. A rioter from Germany.

Easily the strangest and most exuberant film of the festival. A very strange and daring parody of the TV show known in Holland as Idols (and in Germany as Popstars). The film is compiled from series of broadcasts made for the Berlin local television station Viva/Viva. The idea and the screenplay are from the notorious riot artist Christoph Schlingensief. The candidates for the Freakshow are mentally or physically handicapped. Unlike the `normal' commercial example, the candidates have a major say in the show and the competition element is reduced to the necessary satirical variation. Achim von Paczensky, who plays the director of the film in the film, was at first credited as the director of the whole film, but it is quite clear that this is a genuine Schlingensief film. All the press material is written in the (hilarious) spirit of Schlingensief. Wonderful reading but most likely unreliable. Did Viva/Viva indeed gain historic ratings with the episodes of the Freakshow? Why should it not, really? There are but few films (or television programmes) that give you the feeling you're seeing something incredible, too crazy to be true. And yes, there was apparently a taboo. Can you (ab)use the mentally handicapped that way? Look and behold that Schlingensief already had answers to all the questions. (GjZ)

Quote:
?Freakstars 3000? reveals all the commonplace craziness of today?s reality shows. It could be mistaken for a new manifestation of the Idol auditions that have criss-crossed the country, but this film embodies an entirely different concept. Handicapped people occupy the foreground and demonstrate just how sick the world of contemporary media really is. So just who is the ?freak? here?

Quote:
This flagrantly un-PC film is an energetic parody of Popstars. All the candidates in this talent quest have an intellectual or physical disability. If you want to see a film that you?ll have a strong opinion about, this is the one.

Quote:
The latest project from the theater/film-rioter Christoph Schlingensief incorporates fiasco and brilliance into a one-of-a-kind fame academy for the socially displaced.

A genuinely funny and thought provoking film/doc. Recommended.
Has been a hit at the few film festivals it has been shown.

Do not mistake this for something exploitative in the vein of "Bumfight", it is intelligent, satirical and engaged.

More info on Schlingensief, the director (who i met in Paris ;) ) :

Quote:
CHRISTOPH SCHLINGENSIEF

Born on October 24th 1960 in Oberhausen/Germany, Christoph Schlingensief grew up in a middle-class family. After throwing in his studies of German philology, philosophy and art history and trying his (inexperienced) hand at the German TV staples ?Lindenstrasse? and ?Tatort?, Schlingensief soon decided to create his own idiosyncratic underground films like ?100 Jahre Adolf Hitler? (100 Years of Adolf Hitler, 1989), ?Das Deutsche Kettens?genmassaker? (German Chainsaw Massacre, 1990) and ?Terror 2000? (1991).

In the 1990s Christoph Schlingensief turned to the theatre and became the darling of audience and critics alike, in particular with his seminal productions at Berlin?s Volksb?hne, including ?100 Jahre CDU? (100 Years of CDU, 1996) and ?Rocky Dutschke, ?68? (1996). Not entirely satisfied with the scope and reach of his cultural endeavours, in 1998 he decided to expand his creative realm by a political party for the losers of society, Chance 2000, and staged a national election campaign.

By the turn of the millennium, Schlingensief had rediscovered television with his very own take on reality TV formats. Besides the daring artistic breakthrough ?Bitte liebt ?sterreich? (Please Love Austria, 2000), every single one of his visual outings managed to cause a stir, including ?Talk 2000? (1999) ?U3000? (2001), ?Quiz 3000 (2002) and ?Freakstars 3000? (2002), an astute and over-the-top persiflage of the all pervasive casting shows.

Nowadays, Schlingensief?s action theatre has become a fixed staple on the schedules of renowned theatres across the German-speaking realm, including Vienna, Berlin, Zurich, Bayreuth and Salzburg.

PS: French subs will soon follow

PPS: I will soon post German Chainsaw Massacre, in a totally different style

Anyone who can lay hands on any of his other films, especially United Trash, Menu Total, Terror 2000, or 100 Jahre Adolf Hitler, please share with us !

sounds cool, although the thought of a german comedy is a tad offputting :googley: No offense germans, but the funniest german comedy was the german episodes of monty python... the rest of it doesn't really translate :wacky:

it's not monty-python-funny, it's rather : "shit, i can't stop laughing at these guys, but i shouldn't be..."
the thing is the more documentary unfolds, the more you realise the handicapped are not being exploited, it's them that create the show
i got confirmation of this from the director who told me some of the people on this show he has known for years and have been actors in a few of his old movies
anyway, it's a rather brilliant pisstake at reality tv
in a way it says : why show brainless untalented goons on tv, when genuinely interesting people like these are never given the chance to express their creativity ?

seriously, i haven't laughed that much in front of a movie for a long time (except star wars 3, but i was laughing AT the movie)

plus, spud, this one should be of interest to you anyway, just because it's the guy that did the german chainsaw massacre (which i'll release next week), even if the two movies haven't got much in common except they are both satirical

PS : added link for english subs in srt format
