Corky (Anthony Hopkins) is an amateur night club magician with no outstanding talent and very little promise for a successful future career as an entertainer. Audiences balk at his performances and that's on the rare occassion that they actually pay any attention to him at all when he takes to the stage. Understanding that his career is suffering, Corky changes up his act by introducing Fats, a ventriloquist dummy, to the routine. With Fats by his side, Corky's life takes a complete 180 as his performances in front of audiences are now actually worth watching and much more lively and entertaining. After a short while though success begins to haunt Corky and circumstances worsen considerably as he begins to lose his mind.
Fame chases him and Fats out of town and into hiding out in the Catskill mountains. He ends up shacking up at the wilderness retreat of a woman he used to be friends with years earlier in high school. His intention is to get his
head together for a bit in isolation but quite the opposite happens as his condition continues to worsen and eventually sends him and Fats down a road of insanity-fueled bloody murder.
Excellent cast with Anthony Hopkins (who is incredible as the insane Corky & Fats), Ann Margaret, Burgess Meredith, etc. This horror/psychological thriller was just recently released for the first time on dvd by Darksky Films.
