The Mask Of Satan
(and apparently a million other names as well according to imdb)
=====================================================================

Black Sunday is a masterpiece of gothic horror from the late sensei of Italian shock cinema Mario Bava.

Here's the first of 5 remastered films from the new AB Mario Bava Vol.1 boxset. Next up will be Black Sabbath.

Synopsis:

Princess Asa (Barbara Steele) is hunted down and savagely killed by having a vicious metal spiked mask hammered into
her face. Accused of being a satanic witch she's made to pay for her lifetime of evil deeds but moments before her final
breath she swears to return from beyond one day to wreak vengeance on the family of those putting her to death. Asa does
in fact make good to her word as she returns when accidentally awoken by a doctor and his son who happened upon her crypt.
Her comeback (a few hundred years later) also signals the return of other evil beings to assist her in carrying out the
death curse she swore to fulfill.

This next bit is from allmovie (and it's a good description):

"With vampires, bubbling flesh, dank crypts, undead servants and torch-bearing mobs, the plot is a little ripe, but the
visuals are Bava's primary consideration. The atmosphere is so heavy and the imagery so dense that the film becomes nearly
too rich in texture, but the sheer, ghastly beauty of it all is entrancing."

An excellent film and considered to be among Bava's best, if not his best film. I agree with that - technically it is
brilliant and is a pleasure to watch. Furthermore, Barbara Steele isalso very effectively frightening as the
devil/witch/vampire/undead/thing that she is.

Enjoy. :beerchug:

Note: This only has an English dub track and no Italian with subs. Other films in the series will be in Italian with English
subs. when available.
