Damn, now i'm going to feel like a prat and mention some other stuff

Firstly regarding IVTC:
ivtc is very important, read about it in my
very rough guide to ripping:
http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic.php?t=7124
Talks about what's important to do under the framerate section.
For such old movies, ac3 doesn't add much btw.
Regarding hardsubs vs softsubs:
IMO, I agree about hardsubs being bad in principle, I will always take softsubs since it doesn't impede on video quality and doesn't spoil it for people who aren't english. If you give people the chioce its far better than shoving that choice down their throats (or rather meaning they have no option but to download another rip or download and watch a movie with gobbledy gook on the screen).
I have loads of movies ruined with arabic, swedish, chinese, etc. forced subs over the top of the rip, and what's worse is it makes it near impossible to put english subs over the top of other subs

It works both ways, if you give them the choice to use subs in a language they natively speak, its a lot more convient for everyone.
That's why i'm inclined to agree with wee.
Regarding the idiots/lazy sods that don't know how to use subs. If they don't know how to use subs, its their problem... its not like it is very well documented. A simple google search is all you need to do, its just laziness on their part, you shouldn't bow down to the idiot crowd. Simply re-pm this reply:
That pretty much sums up the sentiments.
Whereas if you don't like forced subs, or you don't speak the language that's splashed up on screen, there's no such option to turn them off... the rip is ruined for them
If its the 'loosing subs' which isn't really an issue in reality, especially if you submit them to subtitle sites (see the subtitle site thread in smalltalk), you can simply use a better container. MKV and OGM both support muxed subtitles, and the bonus is you can use seperate subs too since they aren't hardsubs.
On this site, although everyone seems to have a grasp of english that's rather impressive, a lot of members aren't actually english speaking natively. Rather impressive really since my other languages suck
