Direct from New Zealand comes Dark Stories: Tales From Beyond the Grave, an inappropriately titled collection of seven short films that are creepy in their bizarreness, but not exactly frightening.
They begin with ?L?Eau de Vie? which translates from French to mean ?the water of life.? Unbeknownst to Sarah, she has been invited to a posh restaurant that has a macabre sense of entertainment. As dinner is being served, a large glass tank is wheeled out and a naked man is locked inside it. Water begins to fill the tank and Sarah is delighted into thinking she is going to witness a dangerous magic trick. ?But, Sarah,? her friend says, ?we are here to watch him drown.? Now Sarah must find a way to either help him escape or watch the man drown.
In ?Bitch,? Isobel must come to grips with the notion that she hates everyone and that her only friend in the world is her dog.
?The Imploding Self? is another bizarre pet tale in which Fergus cares more about his albino dogfish than any of the people in his life. In his pursuit of the key to evolution, Fergus manages to alienate himself from everyone around him.
?A Vien En Rose? is essentially a monologue by a priest as he tells the tale of a girl named Audrey. The rose is used as a metaphor for all the hardships in her life.
Arthur picks up Jude, a crude hitchhiker in ?Headlong.? His unstable passenger convinces the normally prudish Arthur to explore his rebellious side.
?Sure to Rise? is a strange tale in which April, a squatter living in a rundown trailer, rescues a parachutist. While caring for the badly injured man, she fails to notice her eviction papers stating that if she does not move, her trailer will be destroyed.
Finally, ?Warm Gun? is a senseless piece in which Roger and Wayne converse over a crime. Driven primarily by poor dialogue, there is very little action.
