Quote:
If you take the final transformation sequence from Altered States (you know, the one redone in an A-Ha video) and spliced that into a Brothers Quay short film and overdubbed the whole thing with some cheesy techno circa '93 you'd have an excellent idea of what you'll experience while watching Visions of Suffering. If the swirling psychedelic visuals weren't enough, Iskanov chose to film the entire movie in macro. The camera is always peering out at looming figures from a crack in the wall or from inside a teacup or behind a light bulb. It's as if the film was shot by attaching a tiny camera to the back of a spider. Add on blue tinted chiaroscuro lighting and the effect is beyond disorienting. And yet at the same time it's maddeningly hypnotic. Did I mention Visions of Suffering is 120 minutes long?

If you've ever wondered what it must be like to be in the head of a schizophrenic with terrible eyesight and a thing for squids, then Visions of Suffering is the film for you. You also might appreciate it if you honestly feel as though you've seen "everything" already. But for the rest of us, well, just don't say I didn't warn you, and make sure you're lying down when you watch it.scary and decadent movie, it isn't a classical horror film. Despite the of presence of severe and colorful murders, the director did not try to create an atmosphere of horror or to shock the audience with uncompromising scenes. Accurate to the limits, Andrey demonstrates to the viewer a reality full of terrible characters, and it's other side; incomprehensible and mystical, that has no logical explanation. I would say, that result of the work of the film-making troupe has become qualitative surrealistic cinema without the unfortunate claim of a horror movie.

thanks for this! I've seen 'Gvozdi' by Iskanov couple of years back, it wasn't all that great, but hey, maybe the guy improved his skills!

Quote:
Visions of Suffering (2006) (V)
Directed by: Andrey Iskanov
Genre: Horror
Tagline: A dream is a reality rejected by our mind
Plot Outline: Demons cross the divide between the world of dreams and waking reality to capture a victim and drag him back to their nightmarish realm.
Visions of Suffering is alive with outrageous special effects and astonishing visuals that propel the viewer into a surreal world he/she may never escape from. Demons stalk a victim in his sleep. They appear whenever the rain falls and threaten to break free from the land of dreams into his conscious world. A drug-induced vision allows the demons to escape their hellish realm, and the victim is dragged into their nightmare domain. The latest film from director Andrey Iskanov ("Nails", "Philosophy of a Knife"), this Russian tale of horror takes you on a stunning visual journey into the abyss of nightmarish hallucination.

The source is DV, and loaded with effects and processing so I don't think the other one is particularly LQ, just that it would be almost impossible to get a HQ rip out of the DVD (a bit like Barricade)
