I mentioned this regarding video-man's release but it seems this DVD is the same, a 4:3 movie cropped down to 16:9. That reminds me I said I would grab some screenshots from the Vipco DVD and post the comparisons, I did try but my DVD playing software doesn't take good screenshots (badly cropped). I'll give it another go though.
IMHO the Vipco DVD despite its abysmal quality is still the best therefore because the movie is presented in its correct 4:3 ratio. I don't think it's open matte, the shots look much better in 4:3. Kind of reminds me of the BBC junking all the old Doctor Who serials because people don't want B/W TV anymore. Any movie (or TV series for that matter) should be presented as it was originally filmed.
Kinkyqueen & BaggerInc please don't be offended by my tirade, it was aimed at the DVD producers, not at you.

Yes, 1.85 is the correct ratio for the movie. IMDb (I know, they're not always right!) lists it as spherical so the 4:3 version is probably just unmatted.
Maybe it does look better in 4:3 if something has gone astray in the DVD transfer, or maybe George just likes his movies that way.
As for the movie itself, the part in the hospital is fantastic - the sort of thing that would have given me nightmares as a kid, and the prostitute scene is terrifically sleazy.
However, what follows is 45 minutes or so of false scares and teenage summer camp hi-jinks, and it's only after that that the killing starts and the movie gets interesting again.
This is a new fully uncut version though, so don't let me put you off - it's still an essential watch for '80s slasher fans.

It is uncut I think, IMDb also confirms that the HDTV showing wasn't cut.

OK, it would appear that I don't know what I'm talking about.
The Vipco DVD
has slightly more detail top and bottom than either rip, but is missing a considerable amount to both sides, particularly the left.
The video-man rip
has the most detail of all to the left hand side but is missing a small amount to the right compared to the BaggerInc rip, it still has more detail than the Vipco DVD though. Also, is it just me or does the image look stretched?
The BaggerInc rip
has less detail to the left then the video-man rip but slightly more to the right, a bit less at the top and more at the bottom than the video-man rip. It has more both sides but less top and bottom than the Vipco DVD.
And the BaggerInc rip looks the best quality from the screens, ahead of the video-man rip with the Vipco in last place.
But why do both widescreen versions lose some detail top and bottom? It's obviously not open matte. My message remains the same, show the bloody movie as it was intended to be seen.

Matting means covering part of the filmed image to get the intended ratio. It's normal to lose some picture information top and bottom in a 1.85 ratio version that you'll see in a 4:3 (unmatted) version.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_matte
Even 4:3 versions will be cropped somewhat to remove things that were never intended to be seen (boom mics, crew etc).
Don't beat yourself up over the small differences in picture information between versions, George, it's impossible to ever know what the exact precise framing was (and god knows which bin VIPCO got their print from).
The new DVD is OAR and uncut, that's all that matters.
