Just watched it yesterday and it was very, very average. Pretty decent as far as the production quality is concerned, which was surprising, but had too many holes for me to take it as anything other than almost one of the SBiG ones. Some loose thoughts follow.

Like what the hell exactly are those "monster children" supposed to be? They are called both ghosts and zombies, sometimes by the same people, yet they don't exactly behave like neither (they apparently can talk, think, they run, they use tools and they eat pigs). And then you have the blurb that says "Karen, Sarah, and Emma Tunney are all moving to a small town in Pennsylvania where, unknown to them, in 1913, a horrid mine accident trapped dozens of children alive, underground. But there's a problem. They're still alive.", which kind of negates them being any kind of undead. So again, what are they supposed to be?

It's a very, very point-by-point horror movie. Not that it's so wrong, but it just looks like somebody got a hold of "Making Horror Movies For Dummies" or "How To Make A Horror Movie In 12 Easy Steps" and then followed it to the letter. Very unoriginal.

It's rather hard for me to take the 'poor, starved exploited children that are forced to work in the mines' seriously, when aside from a couple of strategically placed dirt smudges, they all look obviously well fed, healthy and have perfect teeth.

I don't exactly follow the logic. In some old album, among pictures of at least a dozen other children, the mother finds a picture of a girl named "Mary" from 1903, so she concludes that obviously it has to be the same "Mary" that is her daughter's imaginary friend. Now I understand how original and unique the name is and that you could cross about half the American continent and have trouble finding two little girls named Mary during the last 50 years, but in the span of 103, while unlikely, I dare to think it would be somewhat possible.

So, um, "guns ain't gonna stop them", "they live in the old mine" and "they only feed at night". OK, so why hasn't anybody tried, I don't know, cave that place in during the day? Or just come in and burn the motherfuckers? Just pour a few gallons of gasoline inside and throw a match. Or come in and chop them to pieces? Is it rocket science?

And finally, zombie children? Fucking 4' tall zombies?? Scary! Horrible! Terrifying! Oh the danger! What next? Zombie toddlers?! Zombie embryos*?? Zombie Smurfs?! I tremble in fear at the thought of undead ankle-biters coming to get me.

That all aside, as one of the Afterdark movies, this actually looks pretty good. Not something I'd ever want on DVD or would recommend to somebody, but at least it looks like the people who made it did a decent job, not some unfinished shit. Good enough for a "1 time watch movie". 3/10.

* Just for the record, things like "The Suckling" or "Abomination" don't count, since they're not 1% serious. (I hope...)
