But let me point ││ ││ out a few things that make it an enjoyably terrible movie, and even a ││ ││ few things that reveal that it may not have started out so terrible to ││ ││ begin with. ││ ││ ││ ││ The plot is a standard werewolf cliche with bats substituting for ││ ││ wolves, as Moss and McAndrew make an unwise decision to veer from their ││ ││ cave-exploring party and fall into a pit, where they are attacked by a ││ ││ bat. The bat bites Moss and immediately the kookiness begins, with Moss ││ ││ suddenly launching into convulsions at inopportune moments. The minimal ││ ││ special effects, by Stan Winston no less, allow for a single bat-hand ││ ││ and a climactic bat-head, but other than that we just have to use our ││ ││ imaginations to picture the doctor's alter-ego. All we really see of the ││ ││ much-mentioned murders are a couple of point-of-view shots of the ││ ││ victims cowering from the "monster". ││ ││ ││ ││ Yes, the horror is annoyingly non-existent in this picture, but look at ││ ││ what else we have to make up for it. First of all, a wonderful ││ ││ characterization of a distressed b-movie wife by McAndrew. Second, there ││ ││ is Michael Pataki, a veteran of grade-Z silliness like "Grave of the ││ ││ Vampire" and "Dracula's Dog". Come to think of it, he must have only ││ ││ liked to appear in offbeat vampire films. Last and best is the brief ││ ││ appearance of Arthur Space as a tramp that Moss briefly encounters. ││ ││ Hardcore fans of the genre may recognize him as the zany cannibal ││ ││ husband in "Terror House", aka "Folks at Red Wolfe Inn". ││ ││ ││ ││ The locations are bizarre but effective. One other reviewer mentioned ││ ││ the jarring shift between snow-covered mountains and the desert, and ││ ││ this movie seems to take place in a no-man's land of uninhabited trailer ││ ││ parks, shacks, motels, caves, and hospitals. The fate the befalls the ││ ││ obnoxious sheriff is poorly realized but undeniably creepy. I remember ││ ││ seeing the horrendous movie "Bats", made on a budget light-years ahead ││ ││ of this film, and it wasn't any worse than what "Bats" offered. ││ ││ ││ ││ While the wife's inability to figure out what's happening is a little ││ ││ annoying, it does make for an intriguing and eerie conclusion, where she ││ ││ seems to befall the same fate as her husband and wanders into the cave ││ ││ amid the flutter of bats. ││ ││ ││ ││ The silly world that this movie creates is not without its charms, ││ ││ although you have to be a little patient to stick with it until the end. ││ ││ There's something cool about films that are this void of substance, and ││ ││ the emptiness of this one gives it a certain style by default. ││ ││ Bleakness, in every sense of the word. ││ ││ ├┤ └┴┬┬──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┬┬┴┘ ├┤ .. http://cinemageddon.org .. ├┤b! ┌┬┴┴──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┴┴┬┐ ├┤ "your one-stop shop for E.T. porn" ├┤ └┴──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┴┘
