REVIEW
The latest domestic film to mix horror and psychology, "Koul Sokuro (Into the Mirror)" imagines a supernatural world created by our reflections. Though slow moving in parts, the film does a capable job of making the two realities ours and our mirror opposite's come together. The film revolves around a series of gruesome deaths that take place at a Seoul department store just weeks before its grand opening. Trying to avoid negative publicity, the president of the department store (Gi Ju-bong) insists that the deaths, which all somehow involve mirrors, are mere suicides. However, the store's security chief, Yong-min (Yu Ji-tae), a troubled ex-cop who quit the force after his partner's death, isn't so sure. In fact, viewers find out from the first scene that the killings are literally committed by mirrors. In the dark recesses of the department store, the reflections of the victims come to frightful life, giving a new twist to the truism, "you can't hide from yourself." But the film's focus is less on these bloody moments and more on their aftermaths. Director Kim Seong-ho seems more interested in how different characters relate to these mysterious killings and, ultimately, to themselves. With two of the main characters being detectives Yong-min's old rival from the force, played by Kim Myong-min, is also on the case there is a rational side to "Mirror" that sometimes gives the film an "X-Files" feel. It would have been interesting if the director had pushed this element, as well as the film's references to early Renaissance paintings, even further. But as it stands the explanations, paranormal or otherwise, leave a little to be desired. However, the strength of "Mirror" is in the way it's filmed. Given the prevalence of reflections in the film, Kim Seong-ho, a first-time director, seems to have put a lot of thought into structuring all the angles in each scene. Though not perfect, "Mirror" shows the thought and effort put in by the filmmaker, and has enough going for it to make it a promising feature-film debut.

After the accidental death of his partner Young-ho in a hostage situation, the former detective of the Seoul Special Operations Force Woo Young-min feels responsible for the tragedy and quit the police force joining the private security company SecuZone. His uncle and owner of the department store Dreampia, Jeon-il Sung, hires Woo to be the chief of the security of Dreampia, which was rebuilt after a fire where many employees died and is near the reopening in spite of the protest of the families of the victims that claim their indemnity. When an employee dies after hours in the store, Woo leads an internal investigation, while detective Ha Hyun-Su that blames Woo for the death of his friend Young-ho, and his assistant Park, come to the store to lead an official investigation. When other employees that worked in the same department are mysteriously killed in the store, Woo meets Lee Ji-hyun, the twin sister of Lee Jeong-hyun, that convinces him that her sister has not died in the fire and is trapped in the mirrors, while Ha Hyun-Su believes that Lee Ji-hyun is the serial killer.
