REVIEW (Spoiler)
The best so far of this summer's mini-flood of South Korean horror pics, "The Doll Master" doesn't pretend to expand the boundaries of the genre in any way but serves up a neatly paced slice of murderous hokum set in a rural doll museum. Even if its plot makes about as much sense as an M.C. Escher drawing, this feature debut by writer-director Jeong Yong-gi, a former a.d., shows a basic craftsmanship that's refreshing compared with some of his flashier colleagues. Film opened locally July 30, following a preview at Puchon's fantasy fest, and limited theatrical action is indicated offshore.
Backstory is economically rendered in a prologue set in the countryside during the Japanese occupation of Korea, some 70 years ago. A man falls for a kimono lady and makes a ball-jointed doll that looks exactly like her. When the Japanese woman is murdered and the man accused of the crime, he goes to his death still clutching the doll.
Cut to the present and --- in best genre style --- five people assemble near the original village at a remote house that contains a doll museum. There's ambitious photog Jeong-gi (Im Hyeong-jun) and his male model, Tae-seung (Shim Hyeong-tak); a smart sculptress, Hae-mi (Kim Yu-mi); high school chick Seon-yeong (Lee Ga-yeong), and a taciturn young woman, Yeong-ha (Ok Ji-yeong), who perpetually cradles a ball-jointed doll.
All have been invited to pose as doll models by the middle-aged curator, Choi Gwan-jang (Cheon Ho-jin), and a stern woman in a wheelchair, dollmaker Jae-weon (Kim Bo-yeong). The creaky old wooden house --- nicely rendered by designers Jeon Su-ah and Choi Jae-hun --- is a temple to doll-making: Apart from the main exhibition hall, even fixtures and fittings are creepily modeled on dolls.
After Yeong-ha's doll has its head separated from its body, the guest list starts slimming down fast. All the clues point to a mysterious, red-garbed young woman, Mi-na (top billed Im Eun-gyeong, from "Resurrection of the Little Match Girl"), from the nearby village. Oh, and there's also a loony chained in the basement.
With most of the plot explained by the hour mark, film starts piling on the thrills for the remaining three reels, with various people in peril and much of the action centering on Hae-mi, who turns out to be a key figure in the plot. Helmer Jeong shows a good control of screen geography --- a relatively rare thing nowadays --- delivering solid excitement sans f/x overload.
Performances are standard for the genre, with Kim Yu-mi (the heroine's friend in "Phone") emerging as the most colorful character. Technical credits are up to the usual high Korean standards. -- DEREK ELLEY (Variety)

Yeah, took the 2cd version when I noticed that. Plenty of sources though, cd1 is about to complete already, and cd2 is not far off :D

its only 89mins (!!!), 2cd is totally unjustified unless there's something mystical about this film...

I've seen people do 80min movies on 2cds, it boggles the mind

I must agree. This whole 2/3 CD ripping for some undeserving movies blow my mind. I guess there's a lot of people with gigantic hard drives and T3 internet connections out there that they don't care about the size of movies. Wish I had the luxury. :)

I think its because they think every film utilises a decent AC3 track (even with old 2 channel movies), and just don't read any decent guides, preferring the simple "do it all for me" rippers.

Oh well, there's a 1cd so thats for me, unless its nuked some way, don't see why it would be though :)

I took the 1CD version, and it seemed fine. Then again, I'm not very picky.
