This low budget horror, directed by J.T Petty, really surprised me. I'd not heard of it before seeing the film, and I was struck by its natural camera and editing in the opening few scenes. The film is divided in to chapters, and each one builds tension, until its shocking finale.

The plot involves a reclusive old man living alone in the woods, who appears to witness the murder of a child, while out searching for his cat. The film plays out with only a few lines of dialogue, but not because there is nothing spoken. We simply aren't allowed the privilege of hearing the old man's discussions. This put me on edge, being denied any explanation for the events on-screen. The soundtrack is almost absent from the film, only really leaping out during the old man's convulsive dreams, which are brought to reality by some amazing editing.

Soft For Digging is extremely effective, in that it makes real the unreal, and gives the audience nothing to go on but their own emotions. It's a mysterious film, and one that I recommend.
