For some reason I posted in this thread without mentioning I have this on DVD. Would a new rip be appreciated?

A nice big juicy 1.46GB release with subs? Sure. :)

Mmm, I forgot my DVD has only Dutch subs. So for English ones someone would have to search the net.

If this is not a problem, I can put it on my list.

Hard subs suck...and degrade the quality of the rip.

Well you get what you get...I mean if there is no choice then of course a hard subbed would do but if you got the choice then you would be either a fool or completely inexperienced to be putting hard subs on your rip...also I forgot to mention that some dvd's(Mainly things from the orient) don't give you a choice and hard sub the dvd itself. In multiple languages at times.

yes they may degrade the quality....but we have plenty of rips without hardcoded subs, so why not one with them. :outsider: yourself :moon:

The fact is this: The scene aka the Ripping Groups prefer to rip with seperate subs. You cannot change that as to them, you are simply getting a freebie & if you don't like it then thats your problem not theirs.

I do understand that Hardsubbing CAN degrade the rip but I'm not convinced that is always the case. Obviously on a 700mb rip you already have very low compression so by adding subs you will reduce it further. However, if you are making a 1/2 AFR with a good CQM you can make a good quality hard subbed rip that you'd be pushed to tell the difference by eye from a non subbed rip of the same film.

The fact is this...if you make a hardsubbed rip..it will get put in LQ..there is a reason for that and it's a good reason.Discussion is over as far as I am concerned.

The rules don't state that hard subbed rips go in low quality, that is down to the poster to decide.

I didn't say it was in the written rules....this was discussed amongst the members and the staff a few years ago....Hard subbed rips get put in LQ..sure...the poster can put it wherever he or she wants...doesn't mean it won't get moved to the appropriate spot though....LQ...that is just the way it is.

well, I don't care where it gets put....there is no rip of salo here with hardcoded subs. It could use a rip that way. As far as that goes, so could Calvaire, Taxidermia, Irreversable & Requiem For A dream. :googley:

Mmm, of course I have a version that is NOT on dvdcompare... *sigh*.

- My DVD is released by Green Cow, language is Italian (mono), subs are in Dutch.
- I have two extras: Salo past and present & Salo's children.
- It is fullscreen 4:3
- runtime is 1h 51m 45s, PAL R2.

I can do a 1/3 without subs, unless somebody else has a better version to rip of course.

It will be on the list, but two or three movies have to be done first.

Hardcoded subs, or any physical defacing of the picture is automatic grounds for lower quality section. There should be no hardsubbed rips in the higher quality section, they usually get moved to lower quality for obvious reasons.

Personally, I don't see a single argument for their use*. They degrade the picture quality (large changes in blocked areas are the most lossy areas in rips, which is why you get blockiness isolated to the edges between colour variations), they restrict the audience to the subset that is of that language, they can't be adjusted, resized or recoloured to increase contrast and frankly, they are completely unnecessary. Far better to spend your bits on the actual content than on metadata that can be added and controlled externally by the media player don't you think? :)

Its not in the rules because I always thought it was quite logical that hardsubs were rather undesirable over softsubs :(

*okay, laziness is the sole argument... I understand people who are going to re-encode don't want the extra step but the goal of ripping should be retention of quality over 'easiness' for people who are going to introduce lossy steps to their own design. That's the only arguable advocation for hardsubbing, and its a pretty poor one since its at the expense of everyone else :(
