Belphecor: Curse of the Mummy : Philippines (English title) Belphegor Phantom of the Louvre : Europe (English title) Belphégor - Le fantôme du Louvre : Original (French title) Director: Jean-Paul Salomé Writen by: Arthur Bernède novel Belphégor Jean-Paul Salomé Danièle Thompson Jérôme Tonnerre Year: 2001 Country: France
A collection of artifacts from an archeological dig in Egypt are brought to the famous Louvre museum in Paris, and while experts are using a laser scanning device to determine the age of a sarcophagus, a ghostly spirit escapes and makes its way into the museum's electrical system. Museum curator Faussier (Jean-Francois Balmer) brings in a noted Egyptologist, Glenda Spencer, to examine the findings, and she announces that the mummy inside the coffin was actually the evil spirit Belphegor. Lisa, who lives across the street from the museum, follows her runaway cat into the museum after closing time, where she is accidentally given a shock that sends the stray spirit into her body. Soon, Lisa is disguising herself as Belphegor and making off with the rare Egyptian treasures on display at the museum, convinced that they are rightfully hers. When "Belphegor" proves more than a match for the Louvre's security forces, renowned detective Verlac is brought out of retirement to find out why the museum's Egyptian collection has been shrinking. I watched this one on video. The dialogues are hilarious, because they don't make sense at all. The monster isn't scary, but the way it kills people is very funny sometimes. A one-watch-then-put-it-away-movie.

It's a free adaptation of an old novel by Arthur Bernède (1871-1937). An early adaptation was made during the silent era by Henri Desfontaines (1927), with René Navarre (who was "Fantômas" in the Louis Feuillade movies).
Then in 1965 the TV mini-series, directed by Claude Barma and starring Juliette Gréco, was a real sensation in France. It was re-broadcast countless times and is available on a nice DVD - but unfortunately, without English subs.
Another movie came in 1967, "La malédiction de Belphégor", a French/Italian "sequel", an inane but enjoyable little movie.
In the 2001's "Belphégor", you can notice a fugitive appearance of Juliette Gréco, an evident homage to the famous TV mini-series.
