Quote: | The Living Dead Girl is pretty much a direct screen adaptation of my most intimate sexual fantasies from 7th grade. How they did it, I\'ll never know. They must have had the ability to both time travel and read minds. The Living Dead Girl is about, of all things, a living dead girl. She\'s a vampire-like zombie thing that comes back to feast on flesh (of course). The sexiness really lights up when her former lesbian lover finds out she\'s alive again and moves in. She feeds her undead lover any number of witless civilians. There\'s a ton of super hot scenes of fully naked chicks completely drenched in blood. Hmm... I just read back that last sentence in my head. Maybe I shouldn\'t be typing this at work...
The Living Dead Girl is a Jean Rollin film. Knowing Rollin was at the helm tells you a few things right off the bat. One, like I already mentioned, there\'s a ton of boobs in there. And bush. In the few movies of Rollin\'s that I\'ve checked out he displays an admirable penchant for showing full body female nudity. Bravo. Another thing Rollin\'s presence tells you, there\'s a ton of blood and none if it quite matches in color. Some will be bright red, some even brighter. Basically, a Jean Rollin movie is the French equivalent of a Troma movie. Scant storyline, terrible acting, and willing to show just about anything to make a buck. What I like about Rollin, compared to almost anyone at Troma, is that he takes himself somewhat seriously. In many situations, schlock can be completely ruined by an overly serious tone, but it works in the case of The Living Dead Girl.
All that having been said, don\'t expect The Living Dead Girl to be some kind of sexually morbid opus. There are some aspects of it that are truly memorable and make it worth watching, but everything else is pretty repellent. I\'ve become comfortably numb in the face of drawn out acting scenes with actors who can\'t act. If that sort of thing bothers you, you\'ll never make it through The Living Dead Girl. The real strength to the movie is the atmospheric visual tone. There\'s a lot of great looking moody shots of the French manor house where it is set, crypt and everything. Besides that, and the boobs and blood, there\'s not a whole lot to write home about. In the end, it\'s a good watch for fans of the undead, not so much for normals. blog.analogmedium.com/Silver Screen Kid |
