restored the correct filename. Knowing that this is a low budget affair, and having seen it on DVD, I think this needs moving to lesser quality :)

Thanks for this, I don't seem to have it in my collection

Why a smaller resolution?

Isn't standard PAL already small enough?

The more you downsample, the less depth-of-field that is left.
The more you upsample afterwards, the more your picture gets fuzzy.

There's also some bad tradition to convert the pixel aspect ratio to 1:1, this one has kept the 1,0666 PAR. This is already a compression digital video has.
Lessening the horizontal resolution has far less impact then the vertical. Has to do with human perception.

Sometimes I even wonder if it isn't better not to hard-deinterlace rips. A DVD has been converted far enough from it's original. The less it is converted again the better, in my opinion. Most players can deinterlace itself.

well...maybe this is discussion for somewhere else on this forum...

I'd say: enjoy it!

Reason: Bad cropping and 16mm source.

Isn't this one originally shot in 16mm?

About the cropping: Only some shots are not cropped well, but most do fill the screen... Maybe this is a reason too to label the source as LQ indeed.

If I look at those screencaps this compares to a VHS quality source, which is low quality. Even if it is from a DVD if it looks like this it shouldn't be in the HQ section in my opinion.

Resons:

Smaller resolution vs standrd pal:
Because of the Qf. If you have movement in the capture, and the resolution is to high, then xvid (or divx) tends to show more squares on screen (big pixels, aka the dreaded Artifacts) therefore, it lowers the quality.

Deinterlace:
It's a must. Normal dvd players would deinterlace its mpegs (Vobs) but on xvid on the other, if yu dont deinterlace the interlace source, you'll get bad quality, because at the time someone, something moves on screen, you'll get weird scenes.. it would look as if the actor was possessed by the devil or something, plus it's very harsh for the eyes.

About Aspect Ratio:
I do agree into making the rip as close to the original source.

There are rules for ripping that can't be broken you see.. If you break a rule, it doesn't matter if you think if it's better because the source was fucked up, 'cause it has to be done in this way in order to avoid losing more quality.
Some other stuff like the aspect ratio (1:1 or whatever) is something that can be done. I believe that the closer the AR to the real deal (the way it was made) is better.

Anyhow, I dont make the rules for ripping.. so.. I just download, share and enjoy ;)

I started the BLooDWeiSer version, there's 11 good sources. :)

I've finished this just now, but the screens in the first post don't seem to be for the BLooDWeiSer rip they are meant to be from.

The res is bigger and the bad cropping on the left is different than in the actual file. The AR looks better in my screenshot too, the zombie's head is too wide in the upper shot.

The specs seem to be correct though.

Writer/Producer/Director J.R. Bookwalter spent nearly 4 years - with the help of an uncredited, now-legendary Hollywood director - creating this low-budget yet ultra-violent epic about a nationwide attack by hungry hordes of the living dead. From the spectacle of zombies on the White House lawn to its relentless scenes of flesh-ripping carnage, this is the splatter sensation that Dark Star calls "a no-holds-barred, laugh-a-minute gorefest." True independent filmmaking doesn't come from bloated celebrities in Sundance, it lives - and screams - in the heart, soul and blood-drenched guts of the cult classic The Dead Next Door!

This long-awaited Edition has been digitally remastered from the original Super-8 film elements, complete with updated opticals, a skill-blasting Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround remix.

I dunno if this helps anyone, but the version of this that is streaming on Netflix is quite good quality wise.
