I think its about boarderline myself, but for the record, the sections are higher quality/ lower quality rather than DVD/VHS as its a more (or I find it a more) accurate expectation divide given the quality of DVDs in this particular genre of ours :(

I think the reason it comes off as lower is that your looking at an unsharp, hq-vhs style DVD master (DVD5 at a guess too :) ), which is also pan-scan at a lower than optimum resolution (4:3 needs more bits/pixel due to the larger onscreen area, so ultimately it needs a lot more video bitrate). Its a lax guideline for the section split, based on the quality expectation level, we are all about rarity here so the two sections mean little beyond that :)

With the length of the movie, and the quality of the source, it was inevitable Mr Anderson :)

Thanks for the rip btw, I clicked it but never posted it seems.. so a merci beaucoup from me :beerchug:

Yup, exactly what Spud said. Looking at the screenshots, it's rather VHS than DVD quality. Of course the year of production is also taken into consideration, but then again, I've seen movies from the 40s that were mastered perfectly and the rips were razor-sharp.

It's not that easy, especially that some gems never got a proper DVD transfer. However, I'm just trying to be reasonable and if there's any doubt I'm always ready to justify my decision. In this case I think the quality is a bit too low, even for an old movie, to place it among all those new crystal-clear DVD releases. It's not about the specs as much as about the screenshots. The res is a bot low for my taste too, although considering the bitrate, I'd say it was a reasonable choice (it's FS etc.).

All in all, what I always stress is that it's not about the rip being bad, but about the source quality being bad. That's why it was moved. The lq section is not inferior in any way, it's just for rmovies that don't look too hot.
