Virtually no sex n gore, but a nice take on the Zombie-mythos; Kinda like a follow-on from 'Bub' in DayOTD, times a 1000! Good Undead-make-up efx, (Tho they have been consistently high for the series so far!)Top acting and good direction from Dante, too; Gotta love his film, in-joke-humour! My hopes for the series are not dead yet!... |

Good episode, mostly for the concept.
Joe Dante wrote: | "You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see what a fucking mess we're in," he continues. "It's been happening steadily for the past four years, and nobody said peep. The New York Times and all these people that abetted the lies and crap that went into making and selling this war?now that they see the guy is a little weak, they're kicking him with their toe to make sure he doesn't bite back. It's cowardly. This pitiful zombie movie, this fucking B movie, is the only thing anybody's done about this issue that's killed 2,000 Americans and untold numbers of Iraqis? It's fucking sick." While gratified by the warm reception to Homecoming in Turin, Dante says he's eager for the right-wing punditocracy back home to see it: "I hope this movie bothers a lot of people that disagree with it?and that it makes them really pissed off, as pissed off as the rest of us are."

*clap clap* Dante.
Now let's wait for the next episode, Deer Woman which will air tomorrow, though i've seen the trailer and it didn't really got my attention, but oh well i might be wrong.

EP 06 is my least favorite. I'm not a big fan of comedies. I think the story could have been done with no comedic elements, but that would have probably made it too serious for people to accept as entertainment.

I felt the comedy used was mainly at the expense of the 'suits' in the story.
It played a bit like SeanOTD to me; A serious Zombie-flick, with comedy-overtones.
I think its also the first real attempt at serious social-commentary in the series so far. Which is another plus; I thought it very brave, (assuming it gets aired at all in the US! ).
A true Horror, then; A film that reflects our own, 'Human'- horror as much worse than any mere physical, visual horror! Our apathy towards our right to demand and hear the truth from our Leaders! And our usual refusal to accept it even when we are shown it.
Good Bless Amerika!

Excellent! A new horror series! It's what we all need!
Most horror nowadays include comedic elements... I personally dislike that as well especially when it's not done right it'll look more like forced humour.
I prefer old-school serious horror...that's why I love most of the eighties horror...just pure fright! Most of the famous horror icons except Freddy Krueger are mainly horrifying and not being funny.
I find Hellraiser the best serious horror I love it...

Amen brother.
One thing though... I do like to laugh, but I prefer laughing at older movies that are unintentionally funny. 'Don't Go Near The Park' had me in tears laughing my ass off toward the end.

well Dante's was dissapointing for me, i didn't think it was very funny, it actually just seemed like a really crappy american sketch about american politics (and like most american sketches, wasn't very funny or subtle about it). There were some okay bits and nods, acting was fine, but the thing was really stupid and was overly concerned with a really lousy political message rather than a horror show. Maybe you have to be american?
nothing like the stuff he's capable of doing like Gremlins and the 'burbs.
Landis on the other hand was a good one i though. Drop the crappy deer 'fade aways' though, they just looked crap However as silly as it was, it was actually rather entertaining. Gore was good, acting was good.
I have to say, the masters are rather crap at this Xfiles did way better with relatively unknowns.
People i'd like to see do one, not necessarily horror directors exclusively but directors that have made horror films that have had a listing impact:
Roman Polanski,
Ridley Scott (What was his last tv project, the hunger?)
David Fincher,
Stephen Speilberg (did he, or did he not direct Poltergeist? would be cool to see him do another horror movie)
Sam Raimi (recent reports say he's lost it)
Tim Burton (okay so its more gothic fantasy, but he could still have a dabble)
David Cronemberg Peter Jackson Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Problem with this bunch is there a tad too big for it these days.

i saw the episodes 6-7-8
the 6th, homecoming is really AWSOME !!! really enjoyed it!
the story, the message broadcasted, the way it was traited.... a really good episod!!! i was disappointed by the serie, but this episod is really great!!
and i also loved at the end, the graves with the names of "jacques tourneur" (french director of famous movies like "la feline" or movies on zombies...) and G.A. Romero (do not need to be introduce i think... )
the 7th, deer woman.. quite well... not really good, but..pretty funny... also enjoyed the mick garris' cameo at the end
8th : cigarette burns... pretty nice.. not as good as homecoming (which for the moment is my favourite of this eclectic serie) but good... "la fin absolue du monde" lol
wanna see the next episods...
i saw all thos episods in english without any subs... there is spanish subtitles availables (and few french ones..) but i didn't see any english subs... no one own?
thankls anyway (the 1st post of the topic need to be uploaded i guess

"Cigarette Burns" is Carpenter back in "Mouth of madness" gear, and I loved it. Well, sort of, it almost made me cry (I'm growing fleeber by the years). But it's refreshing that someone's still taking his job, and moving pictures, with the seriousness (*dead* seriousness) they deserve. Movies indeed mark you, especially, I believe, if you take them in a smartass way, pretending they don't affect you, laughing at them (I'm not preaching against laughing at movies, but the only things really worth laughing off are the things that scares your pants off, and to really laugh them to hell you should first face how strong they hold their grip over you.)
I didn't know about this series. I'll take a look to some of the others. I've read the bad reviews about the Joe Dante's one and they didn't surprise me, it's been a while now since Dante started gaining popularity to that literate, civil-society crowd which need their truth told plain and simple, wanting the narration coddling them and making them feel on the right side and disliking any true challenge or aggression by the matter on the screen (you know, these little slivers of sharp awareness, most often in the form of "you're _part_ of the _problem_".)

Cigrette Burns was a little close to The Ninth Gate if you ask me. Went the sfx route in the end though, a bit prollish but it was indeed enjoyable

I've been very annoyed for a while by how our society approves and encourages the relatives of the victims of violent deaths to live the rest of their life mourning, watching over the memory of their deceased ones in the best case, plotting vengeange in the worst. I think it would be proof of great wisdom to make that most difficult journey through mourning but, finally, to let it go: and I mean not only going on living, but accept that the killer (or killers, or the ones you think bear the responsibility of the death, as when a surgery goes wrong) of you loved one will go on living ecc. This is not an easy task on anyone, so the whole community should help the healing process; on the contrary, society at large awards relatives who bury themselves in the same grave as their deads. So I thought the ending was a brave one. Yes, it moves from the grand scheme of things to the personal story of the main character, but here again it shows that Carpenter is a real radical, and he knows that this is the level in which one can really make a difference and the level in which our small lives really matter...
Or maybe I'm seeing too much into it... if it is so, well, lucky me, I like my sight

I totally agree with everyone about the lack of horror in many of the episodes, But in the U.K. we rarely get any series with as much blood and nudity as there has been in this series so far.
Also the fact that these Horror Masters have been given the chance to put anything on the T.V. should be cause for a bit of a celebration IMO.
I look forward to seeing the rest and hope that there are loads more to come.
