OK, I just bought a wireless adaptor for my xbox, so I can link it into my network.

Wireless modem/router is 192.168.1.1
Main PC is 192.168.1.2 (static)
The xbox (chipped) has its IP set as 192.168.1.3 (static)

The default IP of the gaming adaptor is 192.168.0.202

So, my question is, do I need to set the adaptor to the same IP as the XBOX so I can FTP to and from it? I have the xbox details saved in my FTP software as I've transferred files via FTP (over ethernet cable) in the past.

I know the adaptor is just replacing the ethernet cable, but obviously the cable doesn't have its own IP.

For reference, the gaming adaptor is a Netgear WGE111

isn't that like asking whether your router needs to be the same ip as another pc on your network when your connecting to another machine?

I'm pretty confident that no, you don't have to set the ip the same as your xbox, and i'm also pretty confident that if you tried, your network would screw up and one of your devices with the ip will be dropped/not recognised, if you do.

As long as your xbox's ip is registered with your router, and networks are pretty much self discovery (ie. if i network one machine directly to another machine, and then network one of them to a router, i can ping either machine), which it is if your just using a switch to connect in, then i don't see why it would have to have the same ip as the xbox. Technically, it wouldn't even work with the same ip, it violates the tcp/ip model having two machines with the same ip, the network would reject one.

You can only have one particular ip on a network or your f*cked. :)

I thought as much. Cheers Spud.

Got it working last night, managed to FTP to the xbox and update XBMC. The only thing I can't seem to do is get an internet connection (Evo-X live update gives a "http error 11002" or something.

I guess it's an xbox setting somewhere. Will investigate further.

Now it's:

Wireless modem/router is 192.168.1.1
Main PC is 192.168.1.2
Game Adapter is 192.168.1.3
The xbox (chipped) has its IP set as 192.168.1.4

Have you set the Gateway in Evox to 192.168.1.1?

I agree :)

You may need to change the IP of the gaming adapter to something like 192.168.1.x (x = any number from 4 to 255).

My Linksys WRT54G router would have a problem with the default IP above. Maybe yours is similar?

That's DHCP allocation isn't it? You can change that, there'll be an option to specify what range you give it. I set mine from 2 to 99, but even then i can track static ips ie. my pc with emule on is 100, outside the allocated range.

That's probably it. I didn't have a great deal of time to feck about with it last night. I think the Evox Gateway is set to 192.168.1.3 (the adapter).

Everything seems to be working pretty smoothly except the http, so I'm quite happy. :)

Biggest problem I had was that there are a couple of unsecured wireless networks near me, and the adapter was connecting to one of those automatically, meaning I couldn't access it for configuration. Also, there seems to be a small problem with the wireless security, the adapter needs to be restarted if it loses its connection to the router (I read this was an issue) so it can go through the connection process again.

Gateway = connection to "intenet" via isp

ie. a switch or another pc aren't gateways unless it provides external connectivity :)
