yeah, its good for lower quality stuff, especially vhs or grainy/noisey olod films.

Although a lot of the time less is more :)

That sample looks good rogue.

Any updates on your decision?

I'll probably release the rip that sample is taken from, but I'm still waiting for some more feedback. :)

Btw. this thread has really worked out great, got lots of recommendations for filters. I'm sure I'll try most of that stuff out on my future rips (or this one if I decide to re-rip it ;))

Great learning experience, thanks a lot to all who contributed. :beerchug:

I take it everyone's ok with the quality of the sample? I'll give the rip a final checking then and see to it that it gets out. :)

Objections?

I watched the rip yesterday. Looks like hq_filter screwed up some scenes with fog + light rays passing through it. :(

I'll have to rip it again. I'll try removegrain + some sharpening. Maybe that works better.

See the stripes in the background? That's hq_filter's doing, the version without filtering doesn't have those.

Thought this might be of interest to fellow rippers.

On the other hand I've tried the same filters on a VHSRip I'm making and they did a great job.

hq_filter is time hungry huh? I tried it and I must say, didn't like its effect. Its slow (hours and hours) and doesn't seem to deal well with background motion. (like the fog in that pic) I'll stick with my lite filters, removegrain/undot/tempsmooth/fluxsmooth, they are quick and get good results. Plus they come in most GKnot rip packs.

I'm making a new rip using degrainmedian. I tried it on a small sample from the sequence the screenshot above is from and was pleased with the result. Good grain removal + no noticable loss of details. It's pretty fast too - 25 fps on the first pass.
