Try the other rip, I downloaded that one and it was decent (and promptly bought the dvd because of it)

I could re-rip this if needed, but I only have the old DVD. A new one was just released recently with a MUCH better transfer, if I'm not mistaken.

Upscaled WAF rip if anyone is interested.

Image

An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog crashes leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realises that an alien life-form with the ability to take over other bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over.

That DVD has the same transfer as the old R1 collector's edition, even the same special features.

I guess it was just a reprint, because the other became scarce (all were sold I hope !).

In fact I think I like the original CE DVD better. The cover is 'classic' and the re is an isolated music/ambient score! But the new one is anamorphic, so those with bigass TVs might like the better picture and its less 'pixelly'; and also the new one has a less dynamic audio track. Its more compressed (not bitrate, but dynamic range), so you don't have to crank your amplifier.

I hate upsampling so i won't be downloading.

Anamorphic always wins visually. I still don't own this on DVD, might by the R1 new CE, or wait for the PAL release.

This film is one of my favouite films. The story, acting and music are great, also the special effects were and still are ground braking and its sad to think that if this film was made today it would be full of cgi.
John Carpenter has done some great films but dont know whats happened to him lately.
any way this film deserves a Directors cut or something, there was loads of scenes cut out. like the weed plantation being burnt, because of it being a living organism...

I prefer this cover

If any film deserves a Director's Cut it is The Thing. The Collector's Edition above is missing some deleted scenes, so I don't think it is considered complete. The alternative ending for one, we really need to see this before we die.

Thing is about director's cut. Any good and free director's director's cut is the cinema version. I don't like extending movies for the sake of extending them, just like I don't like cutting movies just to make them fit a studio profile.

Movie should be as it was intended, which i assume is the version that was released. Extras abound though, how come the missing deleted scenes aren't on the DVD?
